Still five feet of snow on the ground outside my condo in Kimberley, but if you drive 20 minutes and 400 metres elevation down the valley it's prime mountain biking season at Cranbrook.

After years of waiting until May or June to ride, it's nice to have this available while still being able to skin up the mountain for some ski turns.

Mt. Shadows is good to ride in Golden. Went in last night with a chain saw and cleared out the fallen trees. There's still too much snow to get to Rockabout but everything else was riding nicely.

Egypt lake was really sweet place to hang for a few days. I had a rough go though . Heat stroke, vomiting , our designated ski day just pissed rain( which was okay because i had to puking all night ) and the out day we had a solid 25cms and involved some heavy trail breaking. So pretty much all that could do bad ( excluding injury and equipment issues ) did.

On a positive note we noticed the two couloirs under the sphinx . Man that one on the right is $$ . It was the objective but got rained in . Il'l post the few photos i have a little later .

Louise was pretty awesome today. I was pleasantly surprised on how good the snow was in ER6/ER7, it was soft and dry. The coverage in there was amazing, best I've ever seen it.

I rode in there in August after doing a self powered lap on mt7, and with only 30mins or so of exploring we found a fun descent from the rocks with the ladders on them (someone had taken a chainsaw to them, rockabout?) that connected nicely to snake hill.

Sorry, didn't get back on here yesterday in time to give details about the cycling clubs bike swap (I posted in Sprocket Rockets a couple of days ago but I don't think that forum sees much traffic from this neck of the woods). It was a success if you were looking to score a downhill bike, little in the form of xc's. But there were lots of parts, clothes, etc. I imagine the club will do it again next year as it was quite busy.

Mt. Shadows trails are unsanctioned and therefore the cycling club cannot produce maps or signage or do any trail work in that area. With the current woodlot owner the club will not get approval anytime soon. There has been a bit of a battle between bikers and the woodlot owner that turned nasty over the past few years. People were building new trails illegally and this pissed the owner off. It got to the point where nails were found pointing upwards in the trail a couple of years ago, logging equipment got vandalized, then all the awesome woodwork got chainsawed up now the woodlot owner won't sign over the approval that the cycling club needs to sanction that land.

Rode up to Cliffside in Shadows Saturday and it was great! Dry and tacky.

The wood work was cut out and removed on Magic Dragon. Rockabout is the furthest loop south in the shadows network.

Other Golden trail news: This summer they will be finishing Take It Easy (from ski hill bridge along the Columbia River) which will link up to Old Age and Treachery (which is a new figure 8 loop off the CBT Mainline trail at the beaver pond). They are also building two new trails off of Cedar Snag and Bear Claw to link up with the Canyon Creek trail. The club also got approval for the Moonrakers North (of Cedar Lake) which they should be starting building on soon.

Red Plates can ride here too! If you choose, you can purchase a cycling club membership ($40) to help with trail development as well as grant approvals (more members=more grant monies) and members also receive discounts at Derailed (10% on purchases including parts and labour) as well as some other shops in town. If a membership is too much, consider dropping some change into the Karma Boxes at Reflection Lake and Cedar Lake.

I have a hand drawn map of that spaghetti string known as Mt. Shadows network that a friend made and I can digitize if anyone is interested, pm me. It's not a fast and flowy network like the moonrakers, it's more technical but just as fun in it's own right. If you find a trail in there that looks too steep to ride it's most likely a moto trail.

FYI, concrete barriers are up on the Mt. 7 road in an attempt to preserve the road until it dries up. They will be moved up higher as the road continues to dry.

Seconded, once we found ER6 we stayed there all day. One of the best spring days I can remember! This Saturday is setting up nicely too, could be some decent fresh up high.

SSV webcams went offline around the time it started pissing rain in town. Coincidence? I think not, bunch of cuzzguzzlers. So yeah, if you notice no new snow when they come back online then it was probably pissing.

3 days ending with a 25km slog with heavy packs down Pipestone Valley on a borderline freeze with some river crossings. Snowpack swallowed us hole several times, but could have been much worse had the sun poked out a bit more. Original objective went to high winds and whiteout conditions. 1 day behind due to getting stuck behind the pass due to it being a gigantic terrain trap from both sides with afternoon sun beating on it. Isothermal conditions expected with possible rain so headed out plan "b" being delayed a day. Sitting at home watching it piss and knowing that the original plan "a" would have been a suffer fest in bottomless isotherm a day later makes me feel really fucking good about using plan "b". Finishing a slog day on indirect crosscountry trails is fucking annoying. All in all a great trip...lots of fun and some awesome terrain I want to go base camp at. Think i'll keep the long days to above treeline areas for the rest of the season.
