There is a big group of tariff supporters and though they didn&#39;t mention Canada specifically it seemed that NAFTA was a test case. Maybe they misjudged or maybe Trump wanted to go big and ruined the plan? Canada had to do a tit or tat tariff exchange to call the US bluff. Other wise the tariffs would have been enacted as there was no feedback on the border measures. So it was a good plan to at least show that there will be pain on both sides. It makes no sense to tariff raw materials from a country that buys manufactured goods from you? Then the last minute you didn&#39;t understand its not a trade war but border security, yes we know for Trump to impose tariffs without Congress he needs a manufactured security reason, but border security from the Canadian perspective is just to pick a fight. And a 25% tariff with such integrated economies is almost an act of war. This doesn&#39;t line up any of your logical policy objectives. The result of this will be that NA energy security and integration will be lessened. Canadians across the county want to be alot less tied to the US by building pipelines so less oil goes to the US and overall a lot less trade with US. I think Canada should include the 10-20 billion to be spent on pipelines as defense spending. Increasing defense spending will not be a hard sell in Canada now but spending $ on US weapon systems will be. CascadeLuke- we realize you have only so much bandwidth with what you are dealing with and I think only started paying attention at the last minute to the tariff ramifications.</p>

On reciprocity - The only goods that I know that are not freely traded are dairy and poultry ( Canada's supply management system) , financial services ( can't be done remotely) ,clothing has to have NA textile content , think that is protection to US textile producers, Softwood lumber - protection of US land owners and protections on cultural industries ( Canada) . There are restrictions in Canada on ownership of telecoms and airlines maybe some others
