That 40 percent live in the blue areas on that map for the most part. There are a few larger cities in the red areas but it’s mostly rural with low or very low population density.

There's also a possibility that tariff threats could result in trade agreements that are reciprocal and more open than they were before. XXX-ers article from the previous page describes "Canadian response offering a plan to address Trumps border security and crime concerns. And Trump has also ordered a study of the U.S. trading relationship with Canada, due by April 1." Add to that "Canadain premiers are united in wanting to drop internal trade barriers that Trudeau says "just don't make sense," and now the timing is right to get it done."

So while all of this is causing short-term economic harm, if it leads to more reciprocal trade, more interprovincial trade, and preventing escalation of conflicts throughout the world via stronger combined Western deterrence then we will all collectively be better off. Rather than engaging in a tit-for-tat response, the goal should be to strengthen combined North American industrial capabilities. We just have to weather the Trump storm and maybe, just maybe, take advantage of it

It is all *painfully* stupid. Totally bonkers. So far however Trudeau has used it to his advantage. As in, his microphone was just "accidentally" tied into yesterdays venue PA system. Trump believes he gains an edge from creating chaos but other people like Trudeau with the open mic show they can play that game too. His parties poll numbers are up because of this.

Lets call it diminishingly small, not zero. Trump already got what he wanted with Panama. Panama scraped its Belt and Road deal with Beijing and agreed to closer ties with America. A lot of this is about reversing Chinese industrial dominance by reversing declines in the American manufacturing sector. Canada is an important part of that sector. All this talk here about raw materials like lumber, oil, and precious metals is not a path to more prosperity. Climbing the value chain through trade with America is. The Trump teams goal is strengthening trade ties with friends, creating partnerships to limit migration, and enhance Western Hemisphere security.

Trump threatening to invade Canada is an absurd way to go about it. It's too stupid to take seriously and too shameful too joke about. The key is not engaging too much on the dumbest issues; you want to be smarter on issues that matter. Trade with Canada is what matters. If people are concerned about American military action, the most likely place for that to happen is inside Mexico without cooperation from the Mexican government.

To me it’s like your country is a business partner with a guy who’s truly insufferable and an ego maniac train wreck.

This asshole is US’ daddy. We’ve got to deal with him all the time on multiple fronts and he’s fucking up our future. Similar to how you would view this metaphor in real life about a family situation and helpless youth. Canadians certainly can't do anything about it. We don't matter. Ditto Mexicans, Colombians, Greenlanders, South Africans and shortly South Koreans, Japanese, Europeans.

Americans want a America- first policy. Fine. That makes sense in some respects. An autarkic country is less economically efficient but it has self determination. That's the path the US chooses. So be it

Americans will lose the soft power of people believing in the good-faith of the USA. Does that have economic and political value? Some but God only knows how to quantify it.

All the US introspection about how welcome you'll feel about coming to Canada. Come on! We're so godamn passively- aggressively polite nothing will happen short of a tourist openly being an asshole. But as for it "blowing over". I've taken personal spending to anything but the USA and cut approx $3k pa out. I'd like to do more and will. The businesses I work with now model US tariffs as a financial model risk factor and will procure accordingly.

I would be quite surprised if there aren't consumers and other businesses in other countries and regions not doing the same thing.
