My eye test tells me that a great percentage of newbs can't ski well enough to be venturing around in the BC. Watching people ski around Paradise is generally painful, but that's nothing new. It's been that way for years. It's also pretty ridiculous to expect people to mentor strangers during a pandemic.

Ah, you mean the folks who learn to ski by getting backcountry gear and don’t really have any experience skiing at all.

Yes. Mainly comprised of climbers, who think that they have some innate crossover skills that will make up for their lack of skiing ability. I've also noticed that they generally never become good at skiing regardless of how long they do it, but they tend to crush on the uphill from day one. Nobody who has any real skiing skills gives much of a fuck about that (what is worse than the newb who goes off the front, not knowing where the destination lies???). Hence the collective ambivalence about mentoring them. I generally tell these folks they should do at least 30 days at the resort before venturing out touring. None have passed this test to date.

My lady gets intimidated/frustrated by these folks. She's 10 times the skier they are, but getting smoked on the skin track always gets her questioning if we are going somewhere she can't handle...

At least until she sees them stem-christying backseat on the way down.

I've driven past both returning from BC so have seen them but anyone got tips on Mt Spokane and 49 North? If I can only do one which is better?

Both worth using a day on if I'll be staying in Sandpoint and skiing a couple days at Schweitzer?

You know Schweitzer is passholder only at the moment, right?

Everything is thin and rocky right now, and there is not much snow in the 10 day forecast. Schweitzer has very limited terrain with lot of rocks at the moment. Needs at least another foot of snow at least. Probably going to be really thin by next weekend. I'll probably be out mountain biking or digging trail if that gives any indicator...

I'd probably not bother with driving to either mountains from Sandpoint, maybe drive to Lookout Pass/Silver, or Whitefish. Both those places are lower elevation than Schweitzer and have limited snowpack.

And when you're in town, please be considerate... don't share your germs, please wash your hands, wear a damn mask and remember people live here. We all want to ski this winter and enjoy our lives without an invasion of people coming from out of town and skiing and getting the town sick because their mountains are closed. We have a lax policies up here in N. Idaho because we believe in personal responsibility. Be responsible and I'm sure myself and other mags will be happy to show you the "goods" aka less rocky spots.

Yes I am familiar with Schweitzer and skiied there last March I flew to Seattle when it was the only place with covid and started there then crossed into Canada no border issues. This years trip will be into Spokane. I have 4 New Hampshire mountains on my pass so it'll be more busy than ever with VT ski refugees.

The trip will start in Whitefish and end in Sandpoint so theres 4 weeks for a base to build up.

I was pretty responsible on that trip from a virus point of view still annoyed at the hostel @ Red for refusing to refund me because I didn't feel comfortable sleeping in a dorm. But these businesses need folks like me to support them.

Lookout/Silver might be a stop if they have the best snow. I really want to check out Turner.

Montana also has legal sports betting which might dissuade Sandpoint. Bell to bell pow skiing, some takeout, and putting 100 bucks on a Bowl Game to watch in the room will be $$$.

One nursing home had it.

Yeah I am pretty happy just skiing in bounds and sitting around in a hotel room. The trip will be to tick off the smaller mountains I wouldn't normally hit if able to go north of the border. Might end up not leaving Montana until its time to fly home.

Sure enough--kittitas co jury trials cancelled through mid January. I'm 0-3 on jury summons now. It's a world of possibilities for Tuesday... Better check today's NYT.

The comments on all 3 Puget Sound resorts SM feeds are just bitch-fests. Sounds like the aggro attitude hasnt transferred over to real-life at xstal though. Glad i bought my season pass the day they went on sale in April, and have had it in hand since july. Here's to hoping that affords me some kind of priority in the inevitable reservations system at Alpental.

Thanks. They just updated their social media feed as well confirming opening day for Friday and reservations open on 12/2. Not expecting much, but hoping for a slightly different experience than what is occurring down south.

Drove past Summit West yesterday and the lots were full. All of them. Road parking all the way to Dru Bru.

Mostly sledders ignoring the giant “no sledding” signage everywhere.

Stopped at the summit gas station and bathroom line was out the door.

I’m a bit worried for the upcoming season.
