Snow in the PNW 20-21: We may have Corona but Corona doesn't have us!

Headed up to crystal tomorrow. Curious if I need to throw some bindings on the rock skis or if I'm cautious I'll be alright.
Anyone go up today or yesterday?
I know there's some rocks and dirt showing up off 6, no surprise there. Don't plan on getting super rad by any means

Aye. If you have plans for high Campbell then definitely mount up your rock skis. Otherwise, you should be largely okay. There are occasional spots of thin coverage and the errant rock here there. Spring conditions today, almost t-shirt skiing. Nice mashed potatoes, carvable grromers Enjoy

Skied there yesterday. Report confirmed. Go for the Elk Frost stay for the skiing!

Weird and pervasive temperature inversion made it quite warm up top, pretty though.

FWIW, just looked on IKON site to fuck with some reservations and tomorrow and Sunday are both open at the moment.

For the first couple hours. Fun skiing, positive attitudes. Lines were short at 9, not short at 11 (except big chief). Hard to say what it means for an average weekday. If that was 70% of reservation capacity, we're golden when the rest of the lifts open. If it was 30%, not golden.

I was there...and went back again this morning. Significantly busier today (being a Saturday). Lots appeared to be filled or very close to it when we left at 12:30.

With so many lifts clumped together in the base area, it is pretty messy. People spread out quite well on the runs, though. This first week is only pass holders and employees...and it was busy. Lodges aren’t open except for bathrooms and grab and go food. It worked so far since the weather was spectacular, but it will suck when it gets really cold and windy and there is no where to find shelter and warmth other than heading to the car. This would be a terrible season to be a family skiing with young kids. I’m skeptical about how they will handle a mountain with passholders and day ticket customers combined.

Conditions were amazing. I didn’t get to hit 7th since I was skiing with my youngest and he isn’t ready for that terrain, but there was Pow to be had. Today was mostly fast groomers. Most of the frontside runs remain in the shadow of Cowboy Mt, so runs held up really well. Snow stayed soft, not springlike or crunchy.

I figure we have 5-6 weeks before a Biden-driven mass lockdown, so get your lift-serviced turns while you can!

I've taught my 5 kids to ski starting them at 4yo. Never once have we gone into the lodge to do anything other than go to the bathroom. Warm up in the car and grab a snack. One of the main reasons we're at Alpental and Lot 4. If you are having to take a shuttle to your car, you may want to reevaluate where you are teaching your little kids.

Yup, it sucks. I sold my Crustal parking pass to friends with little kids so they could at least get back to the car to warm up or nap.

What I was saying was that if you are teaching little kids how to ski, choose a ski hill that makes it easier to ski with little kids. We have options here and most have some convenient parking available. If your only experience in the PNW is Crystal, I encourage you to try other hills.

This is where Alpental excels. We haven't had our three boys in the lodge more than a handful of times over the last five years of lessons. Easy walk or ski to the car, sit in a snow bank and eat or inside the car if it's nasty. I feel for families elsewhere but you may just have to experience shorter ski days this season if your car is too far away.

Hey I'm fuckin stoked to have shared my first chair ride of the season with my 4 year old daughter. She skied a little both days this weekend and helped to cut a christmas tree.

Why haven't you reached the effulgence and deep vision that has so richly manifested in my life where not only did I make all the right decisions, but every option and opportunity was not only available to ME, but simpered and whined and clawed and fought at my feet for attention!

Yea, though we could drive within 50 feet of the lift and lodge, buy $10 lift tickets for us and $5 lift tickets for the kids, after a few runs when the wee ones tired, we'd repair to a spacious and sparsely occupied lodge with soaring knotty pine ceiling and bask in the warmth of $3 hot chocolates and $1 homemade cookies made with love and hometown chitchat.

We'd sled, toboggan, play tranceiver hide and seek, and maybe take another run before returning home for drinks and adult time while the kids napped before our gourmando dinners.

Of course that was only on the "kid" afternoons where the mornings were spent raging virginal pow with a select group of skiers far burlier and suave than any populating your most moist James Bond daydream with the occasional heli lap.

You really should reconsider your options and dreams.
