Crazy that for just a bit more than what it would have cost you for one mountain’s pass in the 90s you could buy the epic and the ikon and have a shit ton of mountains all over the country and beyond.

It sucks that there is no discount after you've used your free days, they should change that. If I run the numbers the Mountain Collective pass is still the better deal for me.
For example this year (and the years before) I have a Tahoe Local Pass for Kirkwood (my main mountain) and a Mountain Collective pass as an ad-on pass to make things a bit more interesting. I use it for Squaw (3 days included with the bonus day) and for the annual Utah trip: Alta (2 days included and 5 days at 50% off, Snowbird: 2 days included).
Yeah, this is my basic approach. Using 1000 bucks as a base, round number, which, you have to admit, was a good single mountain pass back then, I budget that for the new world, and wind up getting a ton more options.
This year it worked out well. No way I'm going to use nearly all the available passes I had by buying the MC and the Maxpass, but, I had a whole lot of flexibility in choosing mountains as per conditions. Originally I thought I'd be spending a lot of time in Utah, with 17 passes, and then I wrote the state off, but then I was close enough to jump in when it finally started snowing. Now, I'll be back in the east with enough days to enjoy March and what looks like a good late season. I gotta talk to Scotty about perfecting that transporter for next season so that it can hold more skis and stuff.
Dude has the feels
I didn't notice the 'no discount after using free days' part. Kind of sucks if it is one of your local hills. Definitely wouldn't want to go on a two week ski trip to any of the Ikon mountains.

Well, not much different than the Maxpass, but, better, if you're going with the full pass. Colorado is covered well, with shortish trips away from full passes, Vermont kinda blows with Stratton as the full pass, but, still, there's a lot of days within driving distance of each other. Utah is pretty weak. As for Big Sky, seven is a very long week, then just drop down to Bozeman and do three or more days at Bridger for 60 bucks a ticket. That's a nice few weeks. Then drive down to Targhee/Jackson, which is close.
There's still no really good solution for a Seattle resident who wants to ski locally, and visit Whistler, Big Sky, and Jackson.
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...
So for CO, what’s everyone doing? Ikon or Epic?
I have no desire to have an Epic pass, but for the EC market Ikon sucks. The Epic local now has unlimited Stowe days I think, clearly trying to lock in the Boston / NYC skiiers who want to take a trip out west once or twice a season. IKON would have worked w a real pass to Sugarbush or Killington in the same role, but the days there are limited and Stratton just doesn't compete.

Leaning toward Copper + secret pass.
I'd rather try out some new non IKON/EPIC hills (3 days at Taos, Pow Mow, etc.) and splurge on moar Silverton radness.

Just curious, what are the local mountains offering pass wise? Mammoth, so far is only offering the two Ikon options, but June is offering a relatively cheap pass. No idea what the soCal hills are offering.
At least they modified they base Ikon pass to include unlimited days with ten black out days at Mammoth. I suspect they got an ear full.

Ikon Base here - mostly Copper, some Winter Park - will probably keep most of the local days during the week.
Trip to Aspen, one to Big Sky, another to Jackson, and probably Alta-Bird.
That would make for a good winter, in my book.
Hakuba Valley's nine ski resorts to Epic.
