Just saying, if you want the PNW to be like CO, and have all these pass options, you might want to take a look at the potential downsides. Honestly, that's what's cool about the PNW, they have all these little resorts that all have their own style, and their own way of doing things. Lift tix are usually pretty cheap enough that if you want to visit another mountain, it isn't a massive cost.

Or just sell them all to Vail and get it over with damnit!

Maybe. If the summit isn't open it can be let down considering the logistics of getting there.; long lines and short flat runs. Although, it's great if you're a xc skier and/or looking for a late season golf and ski trip (when the summit might have a better chance of being open).

The PNW won't ever become a shitshow because of one thing: shitty snow.

Although it doesn't seem to stop Colorado.

And improved distribution. It's much easier to book (and rent as an owner) one of these properties than it used to be.

Well, there's that, but, it's also way too far for most people in the country to get to. Why would someone fly over Colorado and Utah for that? And as for California, just drive to Tahoe.

Yeah - Bozeman is probably way more travel time for most people than Seattle.

People visit here for many reasons and if they can combine skiing or snowboarding with the visit, it will be a plus.

CO and UT destination resorts works great if you’re going to stay in a hotel next to the hill with no need for a car but if you’re going to rent a car and drive around for these resorts, then PNW is just as attractive as CO or UT.

Exactly. It is an added expense, and I rarely travel to ski.

When I lived in Tahoe, late 90's early 00's, I think it was 1600 for a full pass. It definitely helped keep the crowds down. There was an Alpine/Sugar Bowl pass that lots of my weekender bay area buddies bought. Most weekenders ski 20-40 days a year, and it can be tough to justify spending 1600 for a pass for that many days, that's why lots of them went to Alpine. Some of my buddies who still live there wish prices would go back up, so yeah the comment about being priced out of passes is funny. The lower prices on passes have almost certainly significantly increased the weekend warrior presence at Squaw.

A 2500 dollar pass for Alpine would probably target upwardly mobile locals, not weekend warriors. Like I said before, I ski Mammoth 3 weekends a month and if Alpine was next to Mammoth and cost 2500 that would be tough to justify. That would be 5k for me and my wife for 60-80 days between us versus 1800 for Mammoth. However, I really don't think Mammoth is as much of a shit show crowd wise. It does get packed, but on crowded weekends I am usually only bothered by the line at the upper gondola. Chair 23 is not quite as bad, and if things are really bad chair 22 has great terrain and is usually pretty empty unless it is a storm day. My bay area buddies tell me some pretty bad stories about how bad Squaw has gotten, so if I had to deal with it, and Squaw did not own Alpine, I might consider paying 2k or even 2.5k for a pass. That would still be pretty pricey for 40 days though.

^^^ that's where I've arrived at, although in fairness, I gave up on WP in 1999.

People say it's improved, and that it's not all about MJ bumps and a punch card with your orthopedic surgeon.

With the increased crowds, I'll never find out.

Yep. And IIRC, Alpine hit $1200ish before Vail started the pass wars.

That said, day tickets were like $70 at Squaw, $55 or $60 at Alpine. So you had to ski 20-25 days before paying by the season was cheaper than paying by the day. Even if it were $1500 for a season pass, if day tickets are still priced where they are, there will be more passholes than otherwise.

The other thing w the low pass prices is that it takes away incentive for skibums to work at the mtn and has impacted staffing. Getting s free pass was a nice tradeoff to give up some ski days to work. Now it makes more sense to work a night job if you want to ski a lot
