If you want facts about guns and how the US has a little problem compared to rest of the world, read this. Otherwise keep your head buried in your ass, and face this shit personally some day. It's inevitable.

Wow, BD... I didn't know she was in the airport at that shooting. Fuck, as a father I would be a mess.

Sad to say, but there's been so many mass shooting I have trouble keeping them all straight.

Also, I try to leave this thread alone since The gun nuts get really triggered when we rain on their parade, but I share the sentiments of BD, ice and mute..... Just in case anyone wants to put me on their little list.

For the folks not into this thread and looking for answers-all I can say is you're correct. There needs to be a better way. I personally rid my household of firearms that I wouldn't use for hunting or family heirlooms that were used for hunting. My largest mag capacity is seven and that is a sidearm I carry when I bow hunt. I believe there should be significant background checks for firearm purchase. I believe psych evals shouldn't be out of the questions for firearms ownership and really I'd like to see that it's a requirement. I applied for and provided proof of necessary education and experience for concealed carry. I've never concealed carry nor will I but I always wanted something that said I had passed a series of requirements just to feel comfortable owning firearms. All firearms and ammunition in my household are locked in a safe. I used to keep a loaded sidearm under my nightstand but put it in the safe as well. The culture here says I should keep one in the nightstand and I always did. Statistics say something else so now there is a can of bear spray and an old baseball bat in the closet. I say fuck the NRA. I would support more stringent regulations. I would support a legal requirement to carry some type of liability insurance to own firearms. I would support more documentation. I would support a cooling off period before purchasing firearms AND ammunition. I would support regulation on ammunition purchase. I would support a gun registry. Honestly, I fire around 1,000 rounds per year in controlled environments to either be proficient when hunting or to be ready to protect myself while hunting (I'm not worried about bears but there are a couple packs where I spend a lot of time). I would support funding for CDC research and their findings and have called my legislators stating so.

But there are plenty of places to discuss that. If this is your platform, so be it. I'd prefer to have a firearms discussion in this thread regarding firearms and shooting them. I may not read or give a response to stuff here but feel free to shoot me a PM or direct me to another thread and I'd have a discussion as a gun owner. I'm not down on NFL players taking a knee so I guess this thread might be your anthem to take a knee. Lets talk. Ultimately, most hobbyists, enthusiasts, and hunters are probably going to give you the finger in this particular thread.

I basically think you gun nuts (and you know exactly who you are), are basically fucked in the head. Insane. A mutation.

It's not spoons that you guys worship. It's not harmonicas. Nor baseball cards. It is the worship of something designed solely for killing, whether that be humans or animals.

And it's not even a SANE worship. I use tools. High tech tools at work like interferometers, chromatographic equipment, etc and low tech tools at home like sawsalls and circular saws. A good tool makes the jobs I do far easier. BUT I don't WORSHIP those tools. And even if I did, it wouldn't be weird...well maybe a little.

But worshipping a killing tool? That's just fucked up. I'm sorry. But you guys don't even seem to realize how touched in the head you are. Get help.

    That's all I gotta say.

EDIT: Just read Conundrum's above post. He seems one of the sane ones.

Sorry if the above post seemed a bit abrasive. But events like this, and especially Sandy Hook even more, get to me. I realize that most of you have as much to do with an insane mass murderer as a weedeater has to to with an International Harvester combine, I realize that most of you, like Conundrum, take care to keep your weapons secure, and endeavor to go about your sport in safety.

But I would like to get into the head of a gun enthusiast (there, I didn't say gun nut this time, so there is hope), but damn.. it's really hard to do. What makes you guys tick? What is it you love so much about guns? I actually WOULD like to know. Is it pulling the trigger? Something deeper?

I don't know. I guess maybe I'll never know. See, when we played cowboys and Indians, I was ALWAYS the Indian. (Shoot, I guess that kinda makes sense, eh? )

I blame the 64 year old man, but if you need to call fellow board members pussies and such, then maybe that's the answer.

Ak Rover sure does have an interesting post history in this thread. From singing the praises of the AK-47's function and utility, to claiming anyone who owns one is a deranged psychopath.

Anyhow, back to the stoke. My little man rolled his ankle pretty badly and hasn't been able to play lax or soccer so I took him to the range last weekend to keep him from getting too restless.

    Sending 5.56 downrange:

He started off shooting 22 Hornet, but after about 50 rounds I convinced him to switch to $0.20/rd 5.56 because the 22 Hornet cost almost a buck each!

Probably one of the most rational and well thought out responses in the history of TGR... Thank you.

Seriously, your stance is very responsible and what I believe should be taken by the NRA. I know most gun owners (myself included) adhere to these very careful and adult methods of use, storage and practice. I love to shoot, too, and I get the infatuation so many here have, so I'll leave it at that. I hope all stay safe and keep an open mind.

The NRA 's phone number is 800-672-3888. They are open 9-5 EST. Choose option 6 to get to their Fairfax, VA office and then option 2 to connect to their grassroots political department. Let them know that we need gun control NOW!

Call the nra? They suffer from as much confirmation bias as you do. I'm sure 10,000 polite but firm calls will totally change their minds.

    Maybe we do need;
-Mental health care funded by the state from a gun taxes among other vices like gambling.
-Limit the use of stuff like prozac which elevates the rates of suicide 15x over other drugs.
-Not glorify events, body counts, names or places on TV to give other idiots ideas. The media is to blame as much as anybody.
-Movies... how many posters for movies have guns on them? And why are they always full auto?
-Liability insurance is a good idea as well.
-We have had problems like this since the bath school disaster of 1927, 45 dead.
-We need to learn to be more civilized, not reduce the ways we hurt each other. We will just figure out another way to do it.

Registration will cause way more problems than solutions.

I was in Vegas Friday Saturday and Sunday... I kept thinking why I never saw any cops? And I left before it happened.

And gun porn. I picked up a star m70 parts kit. I plan to make a jig out of brass and rebuild it. When its done it will one of maybe a dozen in this country and I have the orginal box and 2 of the mags still in the wrapper.

I'm going to blow your mind. Ready? Many, many, many firearms owners of all types despise the NRA. There is a silent majority in the middle that you're inadvertently driving to the edges.

The problem with these debates is they're most often binary. The most feasible solution however, never, ever is. Posts like Conundrum's welcome discourse, foster communication and breed compromise. Raging into a thread comprised of gun enthusiasts--most of which are likely reasonable people who would be happy to discuss and find a viable solution--on the attack and foaming at the mouth with accusations and insults will only prevent the very conversation that might get us to safety.

Calm down, reorient yourself, and remember the long game. Nobody--gun owners or non gun owners alike--want to see our friends die. It's on both sides to find a solution in the middle.

Common sense and reasonable thought will get you nowhere. However, I agree with every single word you posted. I was going to say the same thing but you said it way better.

Paying dues and associating with the polarizing NRA agenda isn't being silent about anything. That's not a reasonable course of action if reasonable debate is what they seek.
