I read the quoted text as silent majority among NRA members. Rereading, maybe the reference is to a silent majority of gun owners.

Gunzzz stuff. I have a bet going and maybe somebody here can help me out when the shooters inventory is announced. I'm looking for a measurement to compare the killing power (a function of velocity, mass and rounds per minute I guess?) of what the shooter had in his room with a 1943 M1 Garand and BAR. I have the specs for the WWII stuff but am ignorant with the modern gunz. thanx.

So I guess the logical thing to do, is come to the gun enthusiast thread, and call everyone names.

Brilliant! This should be worked out in no time.

Lots of people grow up shooting guns. I did, and I'm fucking awesome.

Telling a gun owner he is a terrible parent, and a gun nut, is not the right approach. It's part of the problem. You are perpetuating part of the problem...

I can't believe someone would have to tell you that.

    GUNS!!!!!!!!

Yes, everyone knows you masturbate to guns. You clearly have a perverse gun fetish as do others in this thread who seem to worship items that are solely intended for death and destruction.

It is a mental illness and should be called out as such

I see you are on the right path. You are accomplishing a bunch!

I own one gun, and it stays at my office. When I was in CO, and I grew cannabis, I didn't own any guns.

My fetish lies in exotic cars.

Fuck, this gave me chills reading it, scary shit indeed BD! Unfortunately, we felt like we needed to have a conversation with our 16yr old last night about being aware of her surroundings when she is somewhere she is not accustomed to. She travels out of state somewhat regularly with her club soccer team to tournaments and now to regional rugby camps at colleges throughout NE. A tough conversation to have with your kid but imo, a necessary one in today's society.

As others have stated, I hesitate to enter these conversations because my view is not going to be popular with "gun hobbiests", what ever the fuck that means. I am not anti gun and have fond memories of hunting with my father (who died when I was 22) as a kid but I don't see any logical reason the average citizen needs to own semi-automatic assault rifles. My opinion that obviously can be met with the response of, "because it is my right" so let's not travel that path because it will go nowhere.

I, along with many others, hoped that Sandy Hook would resonate and bring on some real change with how assault weapons are bought/sold in this country but here we are confronted with yet another mass shooting by some deranged gun nut. I don't claim to have the answers but clearly, we as a society need to find a way to address the issue before the next kook can buy 49 fucking guns and kill someone we know/love. I sincerely hope we can all agree on this subject.

    GUNS!!!!!!!!

I read a great corollary this morning:

Who cares if Kim Jong Un has nukes?Nukes don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people.
    See how dumb that sounds.

    BTW - I own 2 hunting guns.

12 rifles w/ bump stocks found in the hotel room. How the hell can these things be legal?

Legitimate question for the gun guys. How many rounds/minute could a 64 YO professional gambler expect to squeeze off on an unmodified AR?

On a related note I guess, it was sadly predictable that the NRA did not use the philandro Castile shooting as an opportunity to embrace licensed gun ownership by black Americans. NRA TV is a vivid example of how the NRA has gone off the rails & is focussing on aggrieved white guys, using the same bullshit as cesspools like Breitbart.

Plenty of gun owners bitch about how extreme the NRA has become. OK, put yer money behind a gun owner association that emphasizes training, safe storage, and logical gun control laws. Like the NRA did before it underwent that turning point years ago.

judas, another thread turns political(the second las vegas shooting thread already has).

why don't you idiots start a gun thread on polyass rather than shit on this one.

maybe we just rename all tgr forums as political discussion.

depends how fast/smooth he is reloading, but I'd guess between 90-120

I have a civilian friend who is a very talented shooter. Talented to the point that he trains SEALs, SWAT teams, special forces guys, etc on handgun technique and I asked him this question. He can dump 30 rd mag in an AR in around four seconds while shooting accurately and it's a couple second mag change so 30 rounds every 4-6 seconds. He can go faster but he's not hitting his target going faster than that.

The math for my buddy says around 10 mags but there will be some slower exchanges so maybe 7-8 or between 200-300 rounds. The barrel will be too hot to do that for any amount of time though.

Keep in mind my buddy is shooting 20,000-30,000 rounds a year and has qualified under the SEAL requirements for firearms. Your average hill billy bubba is going to be nowhere close to accurate at that speed and won't be able to keep up on mag exchanges. 3-4 mags a minute (120 rounds) is probably the max that an average shooter would be able to do while hitting their target some of the time. So Diamond Joe's guess seem right on.

I'm thinking about putting an old school aimpoint on my fnc. Thoughts?

Anyone want to check my math? One AR15 with a auto fire mod has a rate of fire at 900 rounds per minute. The M1 ROF is 45 rpm. So one AK throws as much lead in a minute as 20 Gerands.

Now, how can I measure the difference in actual killing/stopping power between the Garand's 2800 fps and the AR's 3300 fps? I would guess that it isn't a straight math but must have a multiplier in the equation. Anyone?

You need to check more than your math bro. First of all, theres no such thing as an "ak15"

Second of all the "auto fire mod" you refer to (I'm guessing your talking about the bump stock the Vegas killer used) raises the rate of fire to probably between 4 and 600 rounds per minute. (Full auto military M16s have about an 800 rpm rate) but there is no way that rate could actually be realized due to mag changes and extreme heat generated by cyclic firing.

Lastly, the muzzle velocity is not an accurate measure of "stopping power", as the two weapons you mention (assuming your talkig about an aR15) fire different rounds.

FPS is going to give you trajectory and and has a hand in ballistic coefficient. There's no reason to do that math. If the shooter knows how to aim, either one of those rounds has a high enough BC to kill effectively. Not really sure where you're going with it or why?

Maybe he wants the maximum performance item, sort of like the Porsche, or ferrari of guns, but instead of made to drive fast, performance for these is measured in how effectively can it kill people, after all, that's what it is for, right?
