Which place is going to have the smallest lift lines this weekend? Squaw, Alpine, or Kirkwood? I'm betting on Kirkwood, anyone think otherwise?

Seriously, it is not even close. KW will be pretty much empty. It is a blackout weekend for Tahoe pass holders. Squalpine will likely be packed as usual.

Any thoughts on the best places to stay out of the wind? Looks like it could be pretty gusty.

Northstar and Homewood almost never have wind holds.

Yep. But then, their base areas (Homewood, at least, w/o the snowmaking capacity of NS) can't have much of a snowpack after last weekend either...

Ottime's right that KW won't be as busy as Alpine or Squaw, but with most passes blacked out, I suspect that whatever Alpine gets running (e.g. Roundhouse, Yellow, etc.) won't be too bad in terms of lines.

Sugarbowl's new Crow's Peak chair is an intriguing option as well. It's a fixed-grip triple, and one of the reasons they installed it was for rougher weather. Crow's Nest terrain is fun too, IMO.

just got back from a quick lunch break at heavenly. it was absolutely terrible, lasted only one run. worst boilerplate i've seen in a long time. there was a little bit of slush in the sunny spots but that didn't help much. big crowds already and almost all tourons with day passes, why you would pay for that is beyond me, the mountain shouldn't even be open. unless we get some snow this weekend there will be death and major destruction of body parts over the holiday week.

    Dangerous Asians Story

For the record I’m just a puro-white boy [e.k. shaaa!!] from the armpit of California who moved to HI and stayed.

Here’s a Dangerous Asian story from Pearl Harbor Day. Told to me by my "Japanee" Uncle. [He many have looked like them but would have been offended if you confused him with a "Japan-Japanee” or God-forbid a “Katonk!"]

Early in the morning on Dec 7th Uncle looks up and sees the “red ball” on side of the plane and thinks it’s just a drill. After he sees the smoke and hears the bombs he knows it’s not.

Later a Japan-Japanee pilot crashes in a field in middle of Oahu on way back to his carrier. Bunch of young Japanee men go looking for him, find him, and beat him like a red headed step child before turning him into the military.

Scott and Lakeview were awesome today, heard it was firm in the morning but I didn't get there until about 12:30. Rode the snowboard today and there were good slushy turns, especially on Lakeview.

    More Goodness.

Skied Alpine with family today. (Kids get Friday and Monday for Presidents' Day)

Firm 1st thing in the morning except for east facing stuff like sunspot and ladies' salmon. Around 11am I saw some people in High Beaver. It looked soft. Lakeview had some great corn on it in the early afternoon. Scott Chute open after noon and looked reasonably soft from the chair. (Kids have a low opinion of Scot Chute, blame their coaches). Top of Seldom was corned up nicely.

That lead to the "Lower 40 probably good" conversation and a bad call on Dad's part. It was firm enough with small patches of slightly softened snow on the traverse to Lower 40 raise concern. I traversed to the edge of the face and decided it was probably not a good idea with the kids. We baled back to Gentians. Good thing because the bottom part of Lower 40 was thin with brush and trees before it joins up with Gentians. Kids handled traversing across and making turns on some very hard snow exceptionally well (Props to their coaches). It was a good lesson on things not always working out and enjoying the adventure of it. Plenty of smiles discussing it back in the locker room.

Tomorrow: If it get down to freezing tonight, I expect the snow to be very hard in the morning.

Kirkwood is definitely edgeable. Not hard, not soft. Crusty off-piste. Seemed like it got down to freezing.

    didn't see this anywhere else.
due to the lack of snow, the freeride world tour has moved the kirkwood event to snowbird. the first possible day of the event will be March 1, with the weather window extending until March 5.

^^^why? Winters here have always been variable here. The one prior to the past three broke 800" and had on of te best snowpacks we have seen this decade. Three 2.5 poor seasons I have no doubt Tahoe will deliver again. Hell, it could happen this spring even.

Seems like the right call this year, although I have not seen the Cirque since the weather cleared. But I they have to run a comp on Vista, best to move it some place else. I do wonder how Vail feels about this. With their adversity to things fun and dangerous,I'd not be surprised if they'd prefer the move be permanent.

Headed to Mexico tomorrow, I I am kind I surprised the forecasts are trending dryer. I still expect a good dumping while I'm gone.
