The whole "she needs to drop out ASAP" meme is really weird. There's tons of precedent for candidates to stay in to the convention in order to negotiate platforms, etc... Reagan in 76, Kennedy in 80, Hart in 84, George HW Bush in 88, and I think Jesse Jackson stayed in too but I can't remember the year.
The only way BO wins the general election is if Hillary is the Veep. He needs her (and Bill) to sell him to rural voters ... not that he or his supporters want to hear this but for all his talk of post partisan healing blah blah blah he'll never have the chance if he can't heal the democratic party first. The divided party won't win. McCain has similar problems which is why Huckabee is almost certain to be his Veep.
I think the Clintons hurt BO's chances at winning the presidency. There are a lot of veep candidates that will be similar in function as you have described. Richardson perhaps? And she needs to drop out to unite the Dems. If she doesn't it will hurt the dems in the election. Regardless I don't see an ancient old geezer being the best bet for the president so it shouldn't really matter if she stays in to the end if that's what floats her boat.
