kona -- yup. this storm isn't gonna meet initial expectations and they are now only calling for a half foot at the most above 7,000' and just a couple inches at the lake. but honestly, the skiing is still totally kickass and well worth a sick day if you're jonesing and if you know where to find the untracked. i'd imagine most of the resort terrain got pretty played today but the bc and the resort sidecountry are off the hook right now and should be for some time.

6am and Alpine reporting 9-13" in the last 24 hours, so ~ 9" or so overnight. that's not gonna be enough to fill in all my bomb holes and tracks we slayed from yesterday

but should still be good, as Sherwood, High T, Upper Beav, Estelle, etc never opened yesterday, so pently of side-country freshies to be ad if you know where to look. only concern is wind, seems to be gusting pretty good @ top of Summit chair right now...

Everone have fun out there today!

edit: snow is done, warning canceled: high pressure building back in for rest of the week.

WITH THE PRECIP STAYING WEST OF THE SIERRA CREST WILL CANCEL THE SNOW ADVISORY FOR THE TAHOE BASIN WITH THE MORNING FORECAST PACKAGE.

Sounds like it was a nice week in Tahoe. Let me ask you all this...I'm headed out there Sunday day for a 5 night stay in Squaw. Given the amount of snow that has fallen do you think there will still be pockets of fresh? Will the trees be all rutted up by Sunday?

Also the weather.......Looks like cloudy weather next week on the 10 day and the potenial for snow/rain on wed. How reliable are these forcasts?

unless it snows again between now and when you arrive, Squaw will be as tracked out as a $2 crack whore. Try Alpine, open boundries and lots of side-country you have to hike to, tere you +might+ find some fresh snow....otherwise, spend a day hiking for turns off Donner Summit or Castle Peak, its beautiful up there and not too crazy, perfect intro to Tahoe BC with killer views. Have fun!

Thanks for responding back right away. I'm sure there will be huge traffic over the weekend.....I have always skied here in the east. And 90% is on a 600' mountain in southern PA. (ive hit lake placid/stowe/shugarbush too) I've really never had the opportunity to get off the groomers. Given the amount of traffic this weekend do you think the bowls/tree areas will be all bumps? I'm so looking forward to tearing into a open bowl.....

Dont let Freshies scare you.....your timing is AWESOME!! 100 inches in a week.....it will be good. It is true the mountain gets fully skied, but alot is steep enough that you dont really get bumps (in the true sense of the word). Squaw will be VERY FUN next week......hiking some ridges off of Alpine would be super fun too (but those will probably be skied after Sat too).

Anyhow, just be psyched, it will be good, maybe not fresh, but very good!

Southbalto: If you've only skied the East, you will be convinced that you've died and gone to heaven. (But fortunately, not Heavenly.)

You won't find anything truly untracked at Squaw, although assuming that you're skilled enough to handle the terrain, I'd say your best bets for soft stuff will be either Broken Arrow (if it's spinning) and Silverado. If you do Silverado, take the Tram Bowl first -- it's the only groomer in the area -- and scope the chutes on the lift back up to decide if you can do them. If your skills aren't up to that, enjoy the Tram Bowl and dodge off to Solitude, just West of Silverado, where relatively few venture.

Squaw will be completely chewed up.

Unfortunately, Saturday is looking Sunny and Warm. So, any sun exposed to the sun will get baked and probably not be much fun on the next cloudy day. Hopefully, the north facing will stay cold enough.

I would add the stuff off Siberia lift to the list. If you traverse far enough it is usually not bumped. Hopefully, the sun and warm temps will not baked it.

BTW - You are going to have an awesome time just on Squaw's groomers. If you legs are tired one day, just hit all the longer groomers. You should be able to avoid have to do the same run too many times. As long as, you keep moving to a new lift. Hopefully, you'll get at least one blue bird day on your trip.

Siberia, Headwall, KT, etc. will all have good options on the weekdays you're there. I find them too crowded for my taste on weekends.

Also, if you're into groomers, look at Squaw's grooming map before you hit the hill each morning.

yep, we'll see. I have no experience busting through crud or powder. I'm a strong 7 skiier and i'm looking forward to the diversity of the terrain. I look o.k., well at least stable, going down anything here in the east. Is granite chief or KT22 too much? I'd really like to take them both on.

Granite Chief will be no problem for you at level 7. (Although we usually don't talk that way around here.) My daughter was skiing it at age 7.

You'll have good choices off KT too -- start with Saddle (off the top to the right), and Women's Downhill (off to the left), move up to East Face, East Gully, and Red Dog Ridge (in order, looker's right of Women's Downhill), and by the end of your trip, you might be ready to try some of the chutes.

But again, I'd avoid KT on the weekends, when it tends to devolve into a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

just an inch at my house in the county but def more up higher. enough to cover up the skintrack up echo and most of the trax from yesterday. as soon as we got up top the sun broke and the whoo-hoo's ensued, especially in the sugar pine pitch. back at the trailhead one of my partners tells me he's going to ski down to gardnerville from killebrew today but after a 2 hr work day yesterday i've got to make a strong showing today. fuck, i knew it was gonna be hard to get shit done this week.

Yesterday the Wall was nicely filled in

The BC is looking fine for this weekend

    Salomon AK Rockets kill it

Fresh lines all day as first the Cornice, then 10 opened and finally fresh laps in Sentinel and Palisades. Pictures were kind of a second thought.

Are you serious? That's not a bad line at all. There's a bunch of people in the open part of the corral, but the corral lines are fairly empty.

Edit: Oh and the p-house was $$$ this morning.

i thought 6 was the one to the right. i can't really make out its corral lines, but it looked crowded for midmorning weekday with the backside newly open after 6 feet. guess i exaggerated a little though
