In the pyrenees, shaded North facing, at least 25 cm of sugar snow under a crust.
And we are getting 30-40cm fresh tomorrow

thats today. one burried and found alive.
but the trigger reports from the last 7 days are scary.
    all very long crowns....
Gonna get even more interesting with precipitation and a snow line up to damn near 2k...
Got out today, wind scoured everywhere from The Valley to the peak. Gonna need a dump to heal that up!

quietly missing europe living back in the US after my 3 year stint a couple years back. Coming back for a redo of our trip that was cut short 2 years ago when coronavirus was raging and got out of the french alps and back to our apartment in NY for 2 years of shite. Now, the redo coming in 2 weeks and I have been stalking every model (weather) and it feels very different from my 3 years living there between 16 and 19. Does anyone have anyone have any reasonable beta on what the trends look like for early march in the alps in general. Looks like it has been SUPER variable and warm with small streaks of snow. rollercoaster overall. i know this far out its suspect but thought i would start shaking the trees to see what might be coming from the weather mags.

It's complicated. The large weather pattern does not favor us ATM. Good storm on sun to tue then all Signs point to warm and dry again. I've been bouldering a lot this season.

When it snowed it got warm really Quick or it was extremely windy. Oh and have I tell you about our persistent weak layer Problem? Northern alps (nordstau north of main alpine ridge) have a better base and are fine.

I got 4 days from December and nothing jan feb, but i wasnt pushing for corn touring or mellow fun. And the dumps happened mid week so no resort for me either.

Looks like the jetstream is staying largely North of the Alps with a few swings dipping into CH.

Warm and Windy as all get out today. Supposed to cool down on the weekend, snow a bit and then warm up again.
When it’s good in the Alps ya gotta get after it, who knows what the following week will bring!

OK, so what's the best bet for the 25-28/2?
My first guess is the Bernese Oberland.

I know St. Anton and Engelberg are due, but I've been there and wanted to go somewhere else.

    Schruns?

Very Wind affected, pretty difficult during a storm schilthorn is tits when it's on though. Models seem to be more Hopeful. I'll send some idea where to meet up by this saturday.

I'd throw davos out there. Because of the frequent wnw storms they have a decent base and trees/ alpine. But you've been there.

My wife's sister and family will be there too so I can't Provide a roof, but if we're going with the rv I can squeeze you in for a night.

The sun-tuesday dump should make for a nice Soft base, it Stays cool enough and your arrival could see some more. Still too far out though.

Edit: Gargellen could work nicely too. They profited from the same pattern and are high enough.

Schruns is intriguing but expensive, can't find anything under $150/night

Gargellen is harder to get to since I'm sort of train bound.

Moritz is highly unlikely to be any good. Barely any base, w/nw flow likely AND persistent weak layer all over the place.

If you're Set on bernese Oberland I'd stay in mürren. Much nicer.

I'll definitely Show up for beers one weekend when everyone is in rueras.

The only set dates are Klosters and Rueras.
Wengen has a good deal on a room and relatively easy access over to Schiltorn as well as Grindelwald side.

    I'm reconsidering Moritz. Danke

    Damn.

Have had other commitments in the last months and haven't had time to make plans for the spring...and the conditions look utter shit???!
As easter is so late this spring, is there any base anywhere in the Alps?
Or Pyrenees? How late do the lifts run on a normal season, say Baqueira - Beret? Mid April?

Northern Sweden & Norway is apparently shaping up quite nicely, but I am pining for the alps badly..

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

The base is actually ok in the Northern Stau region at about 90-125% of average and the weak layer is Buried deep enough and stabilized by the 3000m rain Event from New year. Other Regions have either no snow or active weak layer or both [emoji6]
But even in the North The weather pattern just doesn't favor easy powder. Temp Spikes, high winds, and so on.

Aah, thought Austria & South Germany was bone dry!? Good to know that there is hope.
What is the general vibe, are the resorts gonna keep open until Easter or are they planning to close early...for whatever reason?
Had some initial plans to make a trip with 2 noobs that havent been in the alps properly, so my plan was to avoid the crowds(?) and explore the smaller resorts arond mid Austria, as that is a quick drive from München.

Normally Baqueira Beret shuts down right after Easter Week (April 17th), but after a brilliant start of the season (late november -early december), we have been suffering a very dry and warm winter, so they might not make it until Easter.
