Hello Euro mags.
I'm looking to take my dad to ski in the alps for the third week of March (20-26). My dad is a fairly good intermediate skier. He's 66 years old and is a dedicated on piste skier (probably no off piste for me this trip).
I've told him about all the fun I've had skiing in the Dolomites and Chamonix in years past. He has his heart set on the Dolomites.
We've tentatively got flights booked into Munich and I booked a refundable hotel reservation Val di Fassa.
I'm hearing that there isn't much snow in the Dolomites at the moment.
Are there specific places that you'd recommend checking out that are accessible from Munich that may have better luck for snow? Perhaps St. Anton? Sölden?
A place where we can ski pistes and connect villages would be ideal.
We're willing to change our trip to go through Zurich if it would be better for snow.
@subtle plague- apologies- I'm not familiar with the places to go to for Northern Stau weather.
It's basically everything north of the Main alpine Ridge. Anton has a good base and I'd throw ischgl in the Mix. It's pretty good for Piste skiing.
Tux/Mayrhofen is also nice for on Piste and views. And day trippable from munich.
Sölden has much nicer views though. I don't know about their base, but since we had such massive wind the snow should have pushed into Sölden. And I'd consider obergurgl as a much nicer Alternative with the same views.
Dolomites don't have any base.

oh man there's loads of choice from Munich. I was in the Zillertal valley a couple of week ago that was nice. 4 or 5 decent Stations all on the one pass with free train/bus running the valley to get between each. Apres is relax at the min but still good for a booze and a wiggle in your chair. Pretty sure you'll have a good time where ever you pick.
Italy is drier than a nuns knickers. .

St. Anton for piste skiing? Rather not recommended.
roger that.

I feel like it's been a pretty decent Winter in Montafon. North facing things at middle elevations have stayed mostly soft. I just ski the same thing over and over again anyway, so very limited sample source.
Weak layer has kept me away from the funner stuff.
Thanks for the info, everyone.
I have had two vaccine doses of the Pfizer vaccine that were administered last April. It appears that qualifies for entry into Germany, but not for Austria because the doses were more than 270 days ago.
So it looks like I'll need a booster more than 14 days out from the trip if we plan to enter Austria?
fwiw, Switzerland just rescinded their covid requirements:

Check out the Berner Oberland: https://www.bergfex.com/jungfrau-grindelwald-wengen/ .
Lots of little villages to ski between.

Get close to the Main alpine Ridge and go wind protected. Hurricane force winds are forecast. Up to 180kmh in the alpine....
Gargellen should profit nicely from the strong flow. Pushes it deep into the Silvretta.
My forecast for this week. It needs Google translate though [emoji6]

I'm floating on destinations for March 1-6, Wengen before that, Klosters after.
Will update by Feb 28th.
I see hints regarding the jet stream in the March 1-6 interval, but I'll defer claims to the Oracle.

It's more likely to be warm and dry than the other options.

this is stressing me out @subtle. Are you just following the trends from this season or are you seeing models showing this. I seriously lose my mind trying to make sense of each model and each forecast being wildly different.
Precip.
From 4th on there may be some precip again, but that is indistinguishable from White noise that far out.
Edit: that Shows all ens members and accumulated precip. The lines starts at 40ish because of the dump right now until tuesday.
As you can see 50% Variation (40 to 60 ) is possible even 2 days out. [emoji6]

thank you and helpful...hence my madness. the weather is playing with my emotions...
Circling back to say I've booked a hotel for my dad and I in Mayerhofen as a back up to the reservation we have in the Dolomites.
Both reservations can be cancelled with no charge 7 days out.
I think I'll also book a place in Wengen as another back up and then make a decision based on snow as we get closer to our dates.
Still open for any additional recommendations for places to go that will allow us to ski pistes from village to village like in the Dolomites.
I'm not sure I can think of anywhere significantly better than the three options you have. Dumplings, Rosti or Pizza?
The French mega-resorts are finally getting some infilling but I'm not sure they have the quaint-ness you're after
Ischgl/Samnaun has some fun pistes if that is your aim.
Spent Saturday pistencarven in Schönried. Lot's of terrain to explore in that area. Sunday was spent in Les Crosets/Avoriaz/Morzine. Soft snow mixed in with bulletproof but some serious kilometers to be had there.
If my aim was for pistes plus atmosphere, it would definitely be the Dolimiti. If snow conditions were lacking there, Portes du Soleil would be a good second choice. Lots of terrain to explore for a multi-day visit (village to village to megaresort abominations).

This year, the snow seems to be favoring the North, but another interconnect in the South that doesn't get a lot of attention is the Milky Way, Via Lattea, straddling the French Italian border just East of Briancon and La Grave.
Cesana is an old town down in a shady valley, both Montgenevre and Claviere are sunny with nice decks and great food. Plus one can get there via train at Oulx.
Also down South, skiing between Briancon and Monetier Les Bains in Serre Chevalier is pretty cool.
