Alpine or touring? If touring, I'd save Benasque for spring. Big mountains, take a while to fill in. If Alpine, Cerler is good after southern storms, wind hits it hard when it comes from the north.

For Val d'Aran, general rule of thumb is the farther away you get from the ski resort the cheaper it gets. Also, if you stay at the southern side of the ski resort, in the Valls d'Àneu, it gets cheaper still. Little hidden gem is Tavascan, in the neighboring valleyne lift, 20 euro tickets, nice terrain off the lift, really really really good once you get some skins under your skis.

Also played in the trees. It was deep, surprisingly so. Missed the powder hour opening but still scored plenty.

Let's hope the warming next week can get rid of the weak layer in the alpine and the season can really get rolling.

I was thinking of going to tour if I can find people to ski with, and riding the resort when I'm on my own. A Spanish friend recommended Benasque mostly because it has a cheap place to stay where I could find partners (Benasque Mountain School) and big mountains.

Tavascan looks amazing! Do you think that it would be hard to find ski partners there?

I'll probably in baqueira after Christmas. Weather dependent.

Big ass slide made its way all the way to the road in the town where I grew up (Les Contamines Montjoie, the valley south of Cham).
They built a massive set of retaining walls at the bottom of the slide path to deal with summer flooding and if filled the whole thing. Houses across the drainage got coated in snow from the wind blast and some areas lost access to water but otherwise no damage or injuries.
Pics and drone footage of the carnage in the slide path: https://www.ledauphine.com/societe/2...t-d-armancette

Cheapest place to stay near Baqueira in Val d'Aran is the refugi Salardú (http://www.refugisalardu.com/en/). You'll still need a lift to the resort but the terrace has amazing views and is cheap.
You are mentioning two areas that are very different. Benasque and surrounding mountains is great for the higher summits of the Pyrenees (Aneto, Maladeta, etc) that are mostly skied later in the season. But the Benasque area gets a lot of snow from S and SW fronts but mostly wind and little snow when the weather hits from N or NW. Val d'Aran is the other way around: lots fo snow in N and NW fronts but foehn and lots of winds in S and SW patterns.
If I were you I would hold my decision on where to go until a few days before the actual date and the decide according to recent and immediate weather forecast.
You will find plenty of people to tour with pretty much anywhere there is snow these days. Drive to the Col of Portalet on any day with some snow and you'll see plenty of groups going in different directions. Same thing in Bonaigua, Col de Porté Puymorens, Beret parking lot, etc, etc, etc...
Shot if you hace anymore questions.

Last calm week before the holiday crowds before us. Good that the smaller resorts are all open. It helps spread the crowd a bit. Also makes it easier to rack up some vert as I get my ski legs back. I noticed that even though I toured 65+ times last year, my downhill muscles aren’t what they were before. Could also be I’m entering my late 49s 😉

Hey, I am on holidays with parents, brother and GF in Chatel, Portes du Sole from Monday on - anyone want to take show me around slopes, touring or bars for a day or so for a change? Also advice on where to ride, tour or drink would be very welcome.

Haven't skied the area in a long time but here's some for starters. If you are based in Chatel the closest terrain of interest would be the area below Point de Chesery and over to Lindarets. Next there's some good stuff above Les Crosets from Pointe des Mossettes to Morgins. Both is pretty obvious and well visible from lifts and runs around. Also there's a great run from the top of Pointe de Vorlaz down to Les Lindarets, watch for cornices when hiking up the ridge.

We always based out of Morzine and there is more worthy terrain. Some nice runs back down start from the ridge between Chamossiere and Angolon. Also Les Hauts-Forts above Avoriaz provide some challenging runs but require a hike or AT gear. All the stuff mentioned can be pretty avi prone at times so check conditions profoundly before you go. Have fun!

Yes, and the north faces are still holding well, even if a bit thin at times.

Great skiing with you Tri !
