Think about that - an average of more than a football field per second. We’re fuct.

That area is in extreme drought. It’s so bad no water is being released out of the Klamath system for ag or for salmon. It was an epic shitshow already and this is making it way worse.

Martian sunrise on the San Rafael Swell this am. I was actually pretty elated we made it to mid-July before the smoke rolled in.

All my buddies are too old to be out on the line anymore, or too smart, but I hope those with friends and family out sorting green from black are safe.

Great book, great writer. I might start a thread some time about his circle of writers - Kittredge, Richard Hugo, James Crumley, etc…the Eastgate Lounge crowd. Buster would probably drop in.

Well, the Bootleg fire only grew by 10k acres yesterday, or a mere 9 secs per acre.

And what is now called the Grandview Fire started yesterday afternoon about 15 miles NE of me. Grew to 2k acres by midnight. It’s in grasslands and scrub juniper that’s been nicely baked at 100* for the last month

The nice thing about that kind of sage/PJ fuel in your pic is it should shut right off at night so if you can get a lot of progress made overnight and into the morning and then hang onto it as much as possible when it wants to run, you can do pretty good.

Remember that spot and go get some juniper firewood this fall…great stuff!

We shall see. Haven’t seen an update this AM and I’m about to engage in a battle of wits with a creature possessing a brain the size of a dried pea.

Even better to let the burn on that juniper weather off for a year or two and let it season standing.
Then it's not all sooty when you cut it. Burns like coal.

    Idiots everywhere:

    Stevens County Sheriff's Office

    July 10 at 4:42pm

This past weekend Stevens County area law enforcement and firefighters experienced a significant amount of added stress while conducting firefighting operations in the south end of the county.

Motorists were stopping on the roadway to watch the fire blocking the path for apparatus and personnel to respond into the area. Boaters were not moving to the sides of the lake to make way for aircraft scooping water. Several drones were spotted in the fire area.

In one case, one of the large aircraft had to nearly come to a full stop to avoid a collision with a boat. Launching drones in the area of aerial operations is not only illegal, it will potentially cause all operations to cease.

We ask that everyone please be responsible and use common sense when in the area of wildland firefighting operations. Everyone's safety depends on it.
When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis

Ya, into Yellowstone too. Smoke forecast for 11 am Tuesday:

There is a fire on Highway 20 outside of Mazama right near Silver Star Mtn. I believe the Highway is still open but the campgrounds are closed:

HWY 20 just closed from Early Winters to Silver Star Creek. Drove through yesterday, looked pretty grim and another fire starting on the other side of 20 on Delancy Ridge yesterday. Hope to get some good rain on these tonight!

    Closing in on W2:

The blue dot on the on the map below shows the location of the City of Walla Walla. Gray areas on the map are smoke plumes. The AirNow Fire and Smoke Map website indicates that a smoke plume has been detected approximately 10 miles away to the NE.

Can confirm the smoke sucks on the western edge of the Snake River Plain. We’re down to below 5 miles visibility.

Heads up that SR 20 will FULLY CLOSE at 10 a.m. today - Monday - between mileposts 172-174 (about 20 miles west of Winthrop near Early Winters campground) for fire response activity. There is no estimate for when the highway will reopen so people should plan to use US 2 or I-90 for cross-state travel. We will update this post when we have more information.

    I guess so!

I dunno, I guess when sage and PJ are running all night get the fuck out of the way. That shit’s supposed to take a rest at night and let you get around it.
What a dirty cheating bastard of a fire to stay ripping all night, it’s just not right.

That’s happening more and more often. The way things were is not how they’re gonna be.
