Seriously, I get that I-70 is frustrating as fuck sometimes, but this thread also deserves its title sometimes, because y'all will use any excuse to bitch about anything CDOT does out there, if it so happens to inconvenience you.

Night work is tough in the mountains. A good example is asphalt. Specifications for asphalt call for certain temperatures as a minimum for placement. So not only does the asphalt need to be around 270*, the minimum ambient temp needs to be above 50* in most cases.

Everything is so tough in the mountains! People just couldn't possibly understand!

CDOT can gobble my nuts. Every one of those douchebags should go spend a summer working on the BQE and a winter working on the NYST and then come back and see if they feel like complaining.

They paved that right lane WB near georgetown at night over the last couple weeks. They also worked on a bunch of stuff by the tunnel at night this summer, too. Traffic was minimal except the one time I was stuck behind one of the asphalt trucks going 10mph.

    OFFICIAL I70 BITCH THREAD....

Not I70, but who's the genius road designer who didn't widen the Rte 6/I25 South Bound on ramp (coming from the west, merging to go south on I25). That has been a problem for years, with 2-3 lanes merging into 1, causing massive traffic approaching the area, and they didn't fix the problem while they were re-building the whole area last spring by Federal. It's short sighted planning that's turning Denver into an undrivable city - it's enraging.

Look at the two exits they built in Idaho Springs... The 241 exi especially, where the EB offramp has to make a blind left turn across the EB on ramp. CDOT needs to quit sniffing it's own farts when it comes to road design. They're spending money to build projects that need to be replaced they day they're completed.

You mean like the current CO-9 Frisco/Breck widening where they decided to take a perfectly flat road and replace it with a giant freaking hill with a stoplight at either end of the hill?

Or that they decided to build 4 lanes side by side over that giant hill instead of keeping the existing road as a 2lane northbound and just building a 2 lane southbound over the hill which would have provided much more safety than a 4 lane two way road over a giant hill in the winter not to mention the huge cost savings?

What a waste of dollars, effort, and eventually, lives.

If I'm the only car on the road no problem. But it is about the people who drive that road.

10% grade makes it effectively a big hill.

I'm sure you'll be screaming "it is not a giant hill you drama queens" when all the tourists are doing 25mph up and down it because it is a light flurry and it causes a ripple traffic backup.

Any idea why they moved the road to go up and over the hill. Were they trying to get the road away from the lake for some reason?

Ostensibly, it was cost saving measure vs road cutting for 4 lanes on the current road. The hill solution traded the existing curve for a hill. Curves are more dangerous than hills according to the CDOT project person, but I am unconvinced. The reroute will shorten the road mileage (go over the hill instead of curving around it) supposedly saving gas, but I don't think that is true because you have to use fuel to climb the hill (also more noise pollution from climbing and noise emitting from a local high point).

The obvious best solution in my mind was to put two lanes over the hill as your southbound and keep the existing road as a two lane northbound route. That would be cheaper, safer, easier, and result in better traffic flow.

The bike path goes over the hill where they are now building the road, so they are eliminating the hill from the bike path and moving the bike path to where the road currently is. "More scenic," flatter, but longer. Uncertain how the bike path politics played into the reroute.

I like the idea of the bike path being near the water, but I used to like that hill area too, as you climbed away from the road.
The solution you mentioned does more sense IMO.

    thats fucking funny thanks

btw the elevation gained and lost is the exact same as the old road just in a different place

the funny thing is there was never any accidents on the curves they were always on the straight away right around the turn off for the parking lot / hiking trail to the lake, tons of head ons, fender benders, and supermans off the road

the best thing about this project is they aren't gonna be able to open the new road before winter so traffic will be backed up from wal-mart in frisco to the high school every weekend, gonna be AWESOME, the accidents that will happen by the antler house will be off the charts if you thought breck was a shit show already plan on not even being able to get there this year

After the existing road is closed, there's room for new condos. Frisco needs some in that location. It's making 285 to breck more appealing. I'm sure South Park likes the extra traffic

Southbound it climbs an extra 50+ft and then drops 150ft quickly. Reverse for Northbound. Maybe the road width and barriers between the lanes will make tourists less freaked out, but I doubt it when there is snow.

Hey, for this we have $22 million taxpayer dollars (10% local) and $1 million from Vail Resorts...

Props to CDOT. They repaved EB G-town hill - obviously because I was complaining on this epic thread.

I was gonna say the same thing. It was so nice not getting tossed around by the ruts and massive cracks and potholes.

You know this thread is CDOT's primary connection to the public. They know everyone else is full of sit and we mean business.
