I know Steve, really awesome guy. Next time we have drinks, I will have to pick him up in my neighbors Prius though.

Wrong again. A guy (me) who is wholly unimpressed by a poser's poser car lacks any conviction on the subject. That's the point: Although the poser really aches to impress others with his purchase, most of those others don't care. (And some of those others will be retiring earlier because they avoid poser purchases -- but, hey, that's for another thread.)

But if you have reached the conclusion that someone's car is a "poser car," and therefore the owner is a "poser," then don't you necessarily have "conviction on the subject?"

Porsches are nice. I'd like to have a Cayman someday. The used ones are reasonably affordable, but the ownership costs concern me. And we have kids approaching college age...

No, of course not. One can observe the obvious without having a conviction. Duh. Based on my casual observation, not all Porsche owners are posers. I know a guy who refurbishes old 911s. He's a wrenchhead, not a poser.

My SO's ex owns a Gulfstream. Yeah, right, the guy has his own personal jet. When he's in town he invites her for a ride in his Gulfstream, but she tells him that she's busy trail running, skiing, etc. It drives the guy nuts that she doesn't give a shit that he owns a Gulfstream.

Ah yes, continuing to paint with the broadest of brush strokes. Anyone driving a Porche is a poser with a small pee pee, all Prius drivers are librodouches, Chevy trucks are the realm of rednecks, and Insight drivers openly flaunt their own castration.

Or maybe the poser in the proche doesn't care what you think of his car and has always wanted one, the Prius driver is attracted by high gas mileage, and the Chevy driver relies on the truck's utility for his profession. As for the Insight driver.... uh I've got nothing.
Move upside and let the man go through...

meh, that's a small portion of the new market.

Prius's are the new Crown Vics anyways. Greyhairs running into people and things.

Didn't say that. See prior post. Anyway, it misses the point. Anyone who posts a "what Porsche do I buy?" thread on a ski forum invites others to bust his balls. Duh

While he does open himself up to ball busting for sure, I think this is one of the better forums to ask a question like this. It never fails to amaze me the diversity and depth of knowledge on this cite...

So what if it's the trophy wife who wants the 911, and it's her salary that makes buying it possible? Is the guy still a douche?

does it collect dust in the garage/get more mileage out of grainy internet photos? Yes
does it get driven? perhaps no.

I'm sure he is, but I'm told he's an Insight guy so you may want to rethink that Prius decision.

We get it that you're unimpressed. That's cool. Same way I don't care what you think of what I drive or how you decide to spend your money - to each his own. I think how you've managed to rub everyone in a wrong way here is that you deliberately come into a thread to make broad generalizations or at the very least, generalize about those that don't fit within your very narrow perception of what crosses the line from douche to 'OK'. That in itself belies your assertion that you lack any conviction on the topic. All in all I think you're just trolling for fun so in that regard it's just another day at TGR.

    Enjoy your beer.

Well, certainly not everyone. And I don't recall you getting butthurt each time a spoiled trust fund baby mag deems every Prius owner as smug. Such a brave man you are standing up for overprivileged Porsche owners! See http://www.theonion.com/articles/sen...d-ameri,19113/

Oh, it makes sense now, you're mad that everyone has been making fun of the vibram five finger wearing, public defender working, stereotype as smug. I assure you that wasn't me. I could care less what wannabe baristas drive.

Ah, thereya go, getting into the spirit of this thread. If you really want to pile on, I hereby advise that I grew up in Rootstown, although I haven't been back to Ohio in more than 30 years.

So, are you itching to slay the 264' of epic verts at your home hill this winter?

You're from Rootstown? Ouch. Just kidding, who knew.

I wish I had 264' feet of vert as my home door this winter, but this one will have to be like the last several; I have to settle for the magic bird to take me to Beaver Creek every few Fridays.

So, so late to this.... OP, I say 993. My favorite bodystyle.

Anyone who dismisses a 996 hasn't driven one. It's the first "modern" 911. Reliable, technologically advanced, refined... Probably takes away from the old school 911 experience, but they are awesome. 99 to 01 are kind of stupid looking, but 02 on up is much better. Especially with a few minor mods.

Some people (Big Steve) aren't car guys, don't get it and never will. No big deal, but he just simply doesn't understand. I fell in love with 911's when I was about 8 and vowed to someday own one. At 8 I cared very little about my penis size, as far as I can remember.... I bought my first Porsche, an '87 944 in 1993. It had 78,000 miles on it and I bought it for $6200. I owned it for about 8 years and sold it for $3500 with 134,000 miles on it. That's $337 a year. You damn sure can't drive a Honda Insight for that cheap, and I loved every moment I was in it.

My current love affair is with a 2007 Touareg V10 turbo diesel. Just got it last week! If I could have known when I was 8 how awesome this thing is, I might have adjusted my dreams.

Who knows what will be next ?.... All I know is it won't be new, but it will be a cool vehicle and something I look forward to starting up each and every day. It damn sure won't be just a mode of transportation for me and I damn sure won't give a flying fuck what Big Steve the ultra runner or anyone else thinks of it.

Thanks for the ideas... I don't doubt the 996 is a nice car, but there's nothing about it I want. Really kicking it around has made me realize that even the 993 isn't what I'm looking for. I can't help but look at the 911 like I did when I fell in love with the car as a kid, and a 911 that doesn't have the stovepipe fenders just doesn't quite seem like a 911. I have only driven one 993 and it was certainly awesome... But as much as I know the 993 is the better car - faster, more reliable, newer, etc - I just don't think it's going to scratch the itch. I will drive some and see if I can't be convinced, but so far I'm just not seeing it.

I eill take pics as I start to look and will post some updates... We'll see how it goes.

And who on earth could put any stock in the automotive opinion of a guy who'd rather drive a honda insight than any decent sports car. Maybe it hasn't occurred to him that people can tell when you're compensating for a tendency to compensate. Sort of like being a homophobic gay person...

I gotta believe he's joking about actually owning an Insight. When trying to think of a smartass answer to what kind of car HE has, when quickly scrolling through his mind for the stupidest car he could think of, that one just happened to pop into his head before the Honda Element, Nissan Cube or Pontiac Aztek.

Anyway, if anyone is thinking about a 996, I'd be willing to part with mine. It's optioned pretty well and tastefully modded. Send a PM for more info.
