I don't automatically prefer black rims, but I like it on this car with the black top. I also blacked out the hood emblem, exhaust tips and rear "Porsche" (which replaced the script "Carrera 4"... I think it updates the look)

    Kind of a full theme.....

...All I know is it won't be new, but it will be a cool vehicle and something I look forward to starting up each and every day. It damn sure won't be just a mode of transportation for me and I damn sure won't give a flying fuck what Big Steve the ultra runner or anyone else thinks of it.

Haha. GREAT points. I too fell in love with the Porsche when I was but a small child. My brother and I both had random Porsche posters hung up in our bedrooms, built models, had toys, and straight drooled over everyone we saw out on the road. I still have yet to own one, but that doesn't kill the dream, nor does my desire for one have ANYTHING to do with compensation. I've just always appreciated fine driving automobiles. I've had some fun cars, and feel just like yooper does, in that I want cars that I look forward to starting up each and every day. Not simply a mere mode of transportation. My Volvo's just not doing it for me. Can't freaking believe I traded my CTS-V in for it (so tragic), but I needed a good AWD car I could afford without spending a dime (made an even trade). My CTS didn't do me much good after my move to the mountains. The slowmobile's not permanent though. The moment I save up enough cash, I'll be hunting for a fun used power wagon (A4 Avant, BMW 3/5x wagon, Volvo V70R, etc.) Then, when I someday get a house with a 3+ car garage, I will immediately fill the extra slot with my Porsche.

Fun thread. Don't let Debbie Downer, aka Big Steve, derail it with his overcompensating for compensating tendencies.

So, you're saying that a guy who has rebuilt 3 engines and done hundreds of hours of other wrenching on cars is not a car guy? And your definition of a "car guy" is someone who spends a bunch of money on a poser car and pays a tech a shitload to service it? Okay, got it.

When I was growing up, a "car guy" was a guy who bought old cars and wrenched on them. By that standard, I indeed was a car guy for quite awhile. Not so much these days, but that might change when I semi-retire in a few months.

Dude, you know there has to be mens rea. The act alone is worthless.

    Deliberately obtuse this morning?

Do you really own a Honda Insight? Or just trolling in a Porsche thread?

My grandfather used to work on old cars all the time. Buy cheap, fix up, drive for awhile, sell, repeat. But he wasn't a "car guy" -- he did it because that was all he could afford and have a car to drive, not because he enjoyed it or really wanted to spend his free time working on old junky cars. I don't doubt for a minute that if he could have bought something newer & reliable, and not had to fix cars all the time, he would've done so.

"Car guy" = enthusiast. Prius/Insight owner = non-enthusiast. Those cars aren't fun to drive, they're just high-mpg transportation appliances. Great choice if you are going to rack up a lot of miles, don't mind FWD (or the absence of power, handling, or any semblance of performance), and just want to get from point A to B reliably and cheaply. OTOH, under those criteria, I think I'd rather just drive a Civic or Corolla.

tl;dr: guess I fell for the troll bait.

Well, I worked on 3 F1 pit crews between 1979 and 1985, was a lead engineer on the 930 design team, and was Carrol Shelby's personal mechanic from '85 - '90. So yeah, you're not a "car guy".

    See how easy it is?

By your standard the only car guy on TGR is you.

Yeah. It's one of three vehicles in our household. The Insight is just one small part of my plan to retire early so that I can, inter alia, have more time wrench on old vehicles, build more bicycle frames, ski, high routes, etc.. And, no, I'm not kidding.

And you're accusing me of sweeping generalizations?

Pretty sure he's gripping his right testicle in that pic. Must be the size of a grapefruit.
