Michael Schumacher abandons plans for Formula One comeback
Kevin Eason, Sports News Correspondent
The biggest comeback in the history of motor racing is off. Michael Schumacher today announced that he will not be racing next week in the European Grand Prix, dashing the expectations of millions aching to see the most successful driver in Formula One back on the grid after an absence of almost three years.
But the biggest ache was in Schumacher’s neck, an injury that has niggled him for months since falling off a motorcycle and he knew all along that was the only stumbling block between him and an historic return. After more than two weeks of preparation - during which he lost about six pounds in weight - a medical check on Monday afternoon revealed that his neck would not stand up to the massive g-forces generated by a modern Formula One car.
One run in a Ferrari from the 2007 season had shown him that a 40-year-old with an injury trying to get back to the highest level of racing might be beyond him for now.
“I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible,” Schumacher said in a statement to fans. “However, much to my regret it did not work out. Unfortunately, we did not manage to get a grip on the pain in the neck, which occurred after the private F1 test day in Mugello, even if medically and therapeutically we did everything possible.

“The consequences of the injuries caused by the bike-accident in February, fractures in the area of head and neck, unfortunately have turned out to be still too severe. That is why my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by Formula 1 yet.
"I am disappointed to the core. I am awfully sorry for the guys of Ferrari and for all the fans which crossed fingers for me. I can only repeat that I tried everything that was within my power. All I can do now is to keep my fingers crossed for the whole team for the coming races."
Ferrari were devastated. They had geared up an entire team for the entrance of their idol while Italy had been on tenterhooks waiting eagerly for the man who had won 91 grands prix to get back behind the wheel of a Ferrari, the racing emblem of the nation. Now Luca Badoer, a trustworthy if somewhat lacklustre test driver, will take Schumacher's place.
Schumacher’s return was, arguably, the most awaited moment in the sporting year. Although it came in the most unfortunate of circumstances, after Felipe Massa fractured his skull in Hungary, the world could not resist the lure of seeing the seven-times world champion again.
Authorities staging the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23 sold 10,000 extra tickets as soon as Schumacher announced his intention to race again and Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One’s commercial impresario, was expecti ng the biggest television audience of the year.
But it seems Schumacher’s need for speed cost him his dream. After leaving F1, he started racing motorcycles and it was a crash in February that apparently caused a small fracture in his neck from his earliest Formula One days to flare up. Although Schumacher has kept in constant touch with F1, that is a long way from driving at up to 200mph around a twisting street circuit like Valencia.
It seems common sense has prevailed over the desire to have just one more attempt, racing in Massa’s seat for the final races of the Formula One season, even though the world of Formula One will be massively disappointed.
No Schumi and no Alonso. Valencia race-goers must be pissed.
Can we have Valentino Rossi instead?![]()

Schumi might race at Monza, from what I've read. But like everything F1 it's just rumors.
The only prob I have with Formula 1 right now is the cars are SO ugly.

Gotta disagree. I'd fuck that Ferrari in every orifice and then buy it dinner.
I think the modern cars are awesome..
This is good news considering Alonso is basically the only reason we have the stupid Valencia race anyways. Maybe it will rain and it can be interesting this year? Not likely.

HITLER IN HOT WATER AGAIN

German leader Adolf Hitler sparked controversy again this week (in 1933) by appearing to praise F1 supremo Bernard Ecclestone as a man who could “get things done”.
Speaking in an interview with The Times, Mr Hitler said, “Terrible to say this I suppose, but Bernie was, in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done”.
F1 groups were quick to damn the mono-testicled lunatics remarks as “insensitive” and “just plain wrong”. One team source added, “Mr Hitler should think before he makes such ridiculous remarks. Has he stopped to consider the untold suffering that Bernard Ecclestone has caused over the years or paused to reflect on the evil horrors he perpetrated across the world? And I’m not even talking about his daughter’s pathetic attempts to be a television presenter”.
In light of the outcry caused by his remarks, Mr Hitler was quick to apologise for any offence he might have caused. “I am extremely distressed and embarrassed that these remarks have been used as suggesting I support Bernard Ecclestone,” he said in a statement. “I just meant he was quite good at insisting that all the lorries in the paddock are lined up neatly. However, I do not support such a despicable person nor do I endorse his disgusting reign of terror”.
However, Mr Hitler’s apology may have come too late for many F1 followers. “Oh God, not Nazis and motorsport again,” said one ardent motorsport fan. “Still, at least it’s not that bloody clip from Downfall with some supposedly funny subtitles about Porsches or motorbikes run across the bottom. Jesus, that’s become less amusing than finding blood in your underpants”.
and now for some real driving:

Nah; this guy looks glazed:
But yeah, more bad news about Massa. Fisichella, however, had the drive of his life at Spa Francorchamps... having the chance to drive for Ferrari seems to have upped his game.
Schu looks like he could play halfback in the NFL.
Roo, looks like you almost had your wish: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/moto...ne/8239654.stm
As much as i enjoy the drama of F1, for entertainment Moto GP trumps it every time.
LOVE F1. Come on Hamilton!!
If you are getting rad but there is no one to see you. Are you really getting rad at all?
6 different winners in last 6 races - doubt it'll make it to 7, but it would be amazing if Fisi could pull it off! Pretty doubtful that he could get comfortable enough with the new car so fast, but who knows!
With the way Peter Windsor was slobering all over Reubens Barrichello in the post race interview, I wouldn't be surprised if he's driving for USF1 next season.

Ottime
Massa getting hurt was the best thing that ever happened to Kimi. Ferrari finally stopped ignoring him and put together a car he could actually do something with. Unfortunately it looks more and more likely that Kimi could win all the remaining 4 races and still be out of a job. I don't understand Ferrari's obsession with Alonso. He's the biggest drama queen in the business and I really don't see him playing second fiddle to the golden boy Massa.
Alonso > Massa = no more golden boy.
Apart from the whole him being probably the best driver in the world.
He brings Santander money which has the double wammie of taking money away from McLaren. His salary will be lower than Kimi's
Good article
