12-14" of perfect snow at Squaw today. Fast and spongy. But there were fractures everywhere and 7,000 and below was soup in the early afternoon, even though the sun wasn't on it yet. Anyone headed into the BC tomorrow, be smart out there, and you probably want to be skiing by 8 am. Supposed to be 50 degrees or something like that...

Got screwed by the spur. Woke up at 6, called caltrans and they said 88 was open so I went. Got all the way up to 88/Shake junction and now its closed. Fuck! Had to drive all the way around so I didn't get there until 10:30. 2 laps of sloppy seconds in lower Cham then I notice the Wall is now loading. Hit the secret stash and man was it good. Face shots everywhere with what seemed like 2+ feet of quality pow. Not at all wind affected there in the trees. 4 laps there followed by a bunch of laps hitting the more wind affected but still fresh of Palisades. It was good today. Real good. Best (and last) day at Kirkwood for me this season.

I would say "pretty tracked" but I don't know any stashes... Palisades was still pretty damn good at 2:30. Still snowing a bit when we left, and we did hit one brief rain storm before Pioneer, but that's it.

It looked like things slid pretty well on the Spur (it was closed until the afternoon) and I set off an itty-bitty one inbounds later in the day. Bc folks be safe.

Pretty sketchy in the b.c. today. The steep (and not necessarily wind loaded) slopes were sliding with ease. Fortunately the new layer was not very slabby where we were and it only propogated below us and not very far horizontally. It was the typical new and heavy storm layer over a cookie sheet slick base. The speed of the slides was relatively slow, and they pretty much stopped where the pitch eased off, leaving large piles of cottage cheese in the deposition zone. You would not want to ride one of these bastards through a group of trees. The upcoming warmth will definitely help solidify it, but I'd avoid big open wind prone slopes for another day at least.

With that in mind, the snow was incredible today. Face shots and fun times were had by all who got it before the balmy afternoon set in. Hooray for Earth Day Powder!

Ski Trader - It's the farthest thing from tracked out out in the Palisades esp. upper ^^^ traverse. Spent the last five runs out there and my last run was the best shizz all day; 100% untracked face-shot sweetness. Was snowing heavily at 4:30 when I left, although didn't look too heavy on the way down the hill. I'd recommend you doooooo eeeeet!!

Lots of face shots yet to milk off Cornice, (LOTS) but mostly you gotta earn 'em or hike the fuck out after semi-poaching the bottom. Sorry but we ripped all that shit up w/in a 1/4 mile of the chair

SkierGirl - That's one hell of a shot of SuPu. Noice timing. I mean, the guy's a stud and was balls to the wall all day but that shot is straight-up porn star. Anyway, was great hooking up w/ all y'alls and to you and Lhs, SuPu; thnx for a great day--definitely on par w/ the best I had all season and youse guys is good peoples, no doubt.

    Peace,
    Shawn

Thanks for the beta ShawnB... after some deliberation I decided to skip it.. I'm sure I'll regret it when it gets hot and dry soon, but for now a a long drive to ski cut up pow in warmish temps doesn't seem to warrant ditching some minor responsibilities (again..) oh well..

Sugar Bowl was off the hook yesterday but almost everything under the Lincoln lift slid to the flats

I was at Disney when it open though and the nose was dope for three laps, by the third one you didn't really want to turn any though

I got first through the trees in lower Nancy's when the middle rope turned, it had blown in super deep in there and was face shot city.

Then I was letting off when they opened top of Nancy's and Sugar Bowl and it was on. I traversed behind the 10-12 people who had been waiting for it and they all dropped early cuz they were anxious and I preceded further to the better/steeper terrain of far SB and had a kick ass run.

Knowing that would get played quick I hopped on Linciln back to deep coaches stash for more freshies to my face.

All in all it did not suck and there was easily 2 feet of snow between Saturday night and when we left the Bowl at 2:30.

Yes, but now you are forever changed and the Sierra's are a lot smaller than when you left them.

For sure. But I also will feel less afraid of some Squaw lines now than before I was at PNH. Both will make me a better skier. I'm blessed to have skied and keep sking both.

I'm reserved for Points North Heli for next April too.

Kept looking for people. Thought I heard someone call by board name from the lift at one point but just never ran into anyone.

Indeed. What a day for my first time ever there. SMF, if you saw me, I was in a red Spyder jacket, riding Bros, with six-year-old burgerboy in a royal blue and navy jacket atop K2 Juvys and nine-year-old alpinegirl in a light blue jacket on first-generation Public Enemies.

We almost got on line for Disney before it opened, but the kids wanted to ski, so we did a couple runs on Nob Hill. We did four or five runs in Nancy's and further right from there (Sugar Bowl?). Unbelievably good shit. Even with me pulling a header on a submerged rock below that big cantilevered boulder.

Favorite moments included riding Lincoln chair around 10 am, with burgerboy scoping and choosing steep narrow lines he wanted to try. Then hitting them with the kids.

And when burgerboy -- on a mission, as always, to add more double-black notches to his belt -- led us to Rahlves' Run and stopped halfway down. "Dad -- it wooks wike it goes up down there. Should we stwaightwine here?" "Hmm. Make two turns first." Turn one. Turn two. Looks uphill to me. I nod. He sends it.

Best day of the season for me. Winter finally came.

p.s. alpine ski patrol blows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the last pow day of the year for alpine with stable conditions in the morning and no beaver or estelle due to alpine ski patrol laziness. heard they never even did A.C. control in there since yesterday, and pretty much........."they didn't feel like going out there to check stability today." I understand that there aren't many ski patrol left, but common! IT WAS STABLE! Visibility was 100% by 10am and they didn't open it. WTF?

and now due to extremely hot temps the powder went to soup in .00004sec as soon as the sun broke out. I wouldn't give a shit about not opening it if tomorrow was another powder day, but everyone knew it would turn to shit as soon as mid-day rolled around. well, everyone except for the crappy ski patrol crew. i'm pissed!

squaw was sweet today. got early ups somehow which ended up a little dissapointing becasue everything on the peak ripped out and the light was bad early so we stood around in a cloud for a long time (the skiing was pretty good still, and the sun did show). but after that we had a radical maineline pocket session followed by a double radical palisades session. Gopher, the sick bastared, slayed the sweep on the only day the chimney has been open this year. looked like only four people skied it . yeah gopher! followed by a full shralping of north bowl. followed by more maine line pocket insanity. then it ws 2:30 and like five million degrees. good times!
