The thing that freaks me out about soda is hearing that it causes mineral leaching, ie bone loss.

And getting off fake sweeteners has let me reset my sweetmeter. I'm actually finding raw fruit sweet now.

I've switched to green tea during the day. No sweetener. It's supposed to be good for you with anti oxidents.
Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.

yeah, i quit soda after my dentist told me that it was rotting out all my teeth. now i only drink it on very rare occasions only at restaurants and family gatherings when theres nothing else.

if you like green tea, check out green powder tea at your local asian market. its supposed to be much better for you because youre actually drinking the powdered tea leaves.

juicing is also a good substitute for soda. you can make any fruit/veggie/berry combo that you want...not stuck with whats on the shelves. a lot of the juices are naturally sweet (carrot juice for instance really shocked me how sweet it was) and 100x better than store bought stuff.

Watch out for sports drinks. Gatoraid and the like are probably the hardest on your teeth of any beverage.

Yes you will but there are good healthy foods in the aisles.... that's where you find things like canned beans, canned salmon, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, barley, lentils, wild rice, etc that are healthy. Whole foods are great and the best, but you need to have time to plan and cook…but unfortunately people lack time management and cooking skills in this day and age. If someone isn’t getting enough veggies or don’t have time, canned and frozen vegetables are a quick and easy way to make meals more nutritious. With dishes such as pastas, having less pasta and adding extra veggies to dishes is a great way to reduce the calorie content, add fiber and then get some mineral, vitamins and phytochemicals. I love the concept of the Volumetric Eating Plan by Barbara Rolls and there is good credible scientific research to support it.

The idea of green tea is great. I drink a range of herbal teas and lots of water. I almost never drink juice. If you think about how many oranges go into a glass of orange juice? Maybe 5-6, so would you sit down and eat 5-6 oranges? No. So by having fruit instead you save calories and get the fiber. Plus a lot of fruit juices that aren’t 100% have added sugar in them. Also you want to avoid containers that have the word Fruit DRINK, Fruit BEVERAGE, Fruit PUNCH or Fruit COCKTAIL. These are not juices and contain lots of sugar.

With artificial sweeteners in diet pop it seems like some increase hunger and possibly energy intake and others don’t. I remember reading about a study and no one lost weight when they switched to drinking diet pop. If you drink diet pop because you think you are saving yourself calories, that’s not the case.

yeah, that's a good way to completely kill your metabolism and gain an extra 100lbs after you can't keep it at 1000calories/day.

... how about a more sensible approach, like *slowly* ramping down by 150calories/day every 2 weeks, starting at 2500calories/day. With lots of cardio, this will prevent your metabolism to shut down and you'll burn the fat off quicker than by going straight to 1000cal/day.

Just my 2 cents, don't know what your dietary history.

as I've said before in this very thread, I am aware of the implications of a 1000 calorie diet, and I have my reasons for doing so anyway.

thanks for your concern, but I wish you would have read the thread so I wouldn't have to repeat myself.

I'm 315 already. 32.5% bodyfat.. actually a few tenths of a percent higher than my last reading, but all of that is well within the 2-3% margin of error my bioelectrical impedance device has anyway.

Lost the 2 lbs I gained in aspen and then some..
it's prolly mostly water weight. < 300 by mid-april, dammit!

I broke through my weight plateau of 196 and am at 195 and dropping.

5 mile run tonight, 40 mile ride tomorrow and a 7 mile run on Sunday.

Just stocked up on healthy stuff to eat too.

My goals were 195 by the end of March, 190 by the end of April, 185 but the end of May, and 180 by the end of June. So far, I'm on track.

    updated: 209.

It shot up to 217 after my bro's engagement party.

Holy crap, do I have a sweet tooth! I've always known about the salt tooth (mmm. jerky) and the fat tooth (mmm. brie!) but this was a surprise.

Got rid of most of the cheap sugars like in bref cereal and stopped sucking down 2 glasses of OJ in the morning, but it's like a ravening chocolate monster at 3pm. I trashed ALL of the Halloween-sized candy the day after I signed up. Then a week later had a half-box power bar binge. Ooof!

In the meantime, no gym or bike for overwork. . .

I'll bet a lot that I eat more calories than most of you folks every day and I weigh 160ish and am 5'11.

Guess what, News FLASH!: Its not the quantity, its the quality. Eat healthier foods and work out. Not all calories are created equal. By starving yourself, all you do is fuck up your body. Once you start eating again, you will gain back the weight because your body is in starvation mode.

Also, for all of you that binge: have some fucking self dicipline. You are all adults and I can manage myself better than you can. Seriously, grow up.

No winky? Prolly should add one so people don't get offended by the tone....

This is a helpful, cooperative, supportive thread, no?

ok, mr. hotshot expert, I'm sure you exercise uncompromising self-discipline in every aspect of your life - is there a difference between a "binge" and an "indulgence" ?

While in aspen, if I wanted a hamburger, I had a hamburger. I didn't deny myself these foods as I did, and do, when I was/am at home - but I also didn't overeat - at least not relative to my normal eating habits. Why? Because one - it's hard to diet when you're on a 3500-mile roadtrip, and two - I wanted to enjoy my experience, including food, when on vacation.

did I not have any "fucking self-discipline?" do I need to seriously "grow up?"

Steve, the binge comment wasn't exactly aimed at a burger.

Im talking about people who don't eat and then because their bodies crave food so badly, they trash their entire pantry.

Anyway, 2 pounds on a vacation isn't exactly a lot to worry about.

It all comes down to willpower, and how badly do you want it? When I stopped eating wheat, alcohol, poultry and redmeat right after the start of lent, it took a lot of willpower to avoid eating my pantry door - and the cravings lasted a good couple of weeks. Not by design, but by coincidence, the cravings were going away by the time I started cutting calories to 1000/day.

I ate both wheat and red meat (but no alcohol or poultry) on this 7-day trip, and was actually worried that I'd have to go through another two weeks of intense cravings. Fortunately, on the second day back, the cravings are largely gone already. Thank god, because the first time was rough enough. You can read my blog (link in sig) and go back and find some pretty crazy "I want macaroni!" rants from less than a month ago.. (as well as some writing about others who have lost a lot of weight quickly and kept it off by severely limiting calories for several months, then starting a different lifestyle than before.)

I'm collecting a bunch of thoughts about the 1000-calorie diet that I will blog about in the near future. Should be an interesting read for you guys.

(damn... "blog" has not only entered my daily vocabulary, i'm now using it as a verb. arg!!)

You're 18 and have a radically different body chemistry and metabolism than most of the folks posting in this thread. You don't know shit about working behind a deak all day, real stress, having or taking care of kids, or any of the other lifestyle and natural conditions that contribute to a deficit of fitness.

Sure, I might have a better metabolism than some. But if it didn't work out and ate everything I saw, I would gain weight too.

As for not knowing anything about stress and all that...

Yeah, I don't work. For the past few years, I have sat behind a desk at school for about 7 hours a day, not to mention the multiple hours of nightly homework. And with all that, I still fit in 2 hours of swim practice 6-7 days a week and no, my parents don't make me go, I swim completely of my own accord.

I imagine that if people would take the time that they spend sitting around at home doing nothing and convert it to walking/jogging/swimming/cycling time, they would see a dramatic change in their lives. I don't care how many responsibilities you have, I garuntee you that you have an hour or two a day that you spend sitting around and watching TV and the like. Here, buy an exercise bike/rowing machine and do that while you watch TV.

But feel free to disregard my opinion. Afterall, I'm only eighteen and have no life experience. On the otherhand, I'm not the one who needs advice on not being fat.

Ahhh, the blissful ignorance of youth. Dude - grow up, get a real job, get a wife and kids, get a house, and get all the responsibilities that go along with all of the above. Then, and only, then lecture me about how much free time I have.

Listening to you spew is like listening to someone who has never seen water describe what it's like to sail.

gee, we all sat behind desks at school. and most of us played sports in school.

but it's ok, because when we were your age, we thought we knew everything, too. so we know where you're coming from..

most of us don't have the ability to look back 15 years to the stuff we said when we were 18.. but you're lucky, because this thread will probably be archived and readily available for you to see, just at the touch of a search button. i wish i could be there to see it, because it will be comedy gold...

Yeah, you guys are older that I.

You are also more knowledgable about life, the universe, and everything...

Yet you can't manage your weight.

Snow Slider, I never said you have oodles of free time. I just said that you probably spend some time every day/week watching TV or lounging. I simply suggested that those few hours could be converted to a more productive use.

WOW. I am always tempted to say that something is the stupidest thing EVER written here, but I always back down, cause it doesn't seem fair. I can now officially say this is the stupidest thing ever written on TGR. Congrats.

What do you think, a website comprised of skiers, bikers, and climbers all sat around on their asses playing video games while eating cheetos throughout highschool? We all weighed around 160 at 18, well at least I did. I maintained a weight of 175 from Jr year of highschool until I was about 28. The weight starts to creep up after that. Your metabolism changes. I am no less active, if anything I am more active. Shit changes. Take a good look at your dad and grandpa. If they weigh 160 at their age, then you are set. If they have a beer gut, you best prepare yourself. Genetics has way more to do with this stuff than you know.

BTW, I weigh 190 now at 34, so I am not exactly fat, but you would be amazed how hard it is to lose 5-10 lbs. Do yourself a favor, and STFU until you hit about 25- it will pay huge dividends. Trust me, I'm old.

    You're a dumbass. At 18 I was 5'11" and 140 lbs, you're a fucking fat ass.
I always used to take my ultra-high metabolism for granted until one, day, SHOCKINGLY, it changed. Went from 140 lbs to 187 lbs in a little less than a year before I was able to effectively balance out my diet and excersize, and about 3 months to start losing weight.

Search for this when you get a real job and laugh at your other comments.
