    GUNS!!!!!!!!

    New acquisition…

Winchester 1894, circa 1910 per serial number. My Dad gave it to me, belonged to my great uncle. Going to take it to a gunsmith to be looked over. Chambered in 25-35 which is still made, but tough to find. I’ve read that 6x52R can be used, but see conflicting reports. Easier to find and way cheaper. Anyone have experience with this?

Captain obvious says to be careful with loads. I have a Marlin of that vintage--a retired Texas Rangers' rifle--and have read that modern ammo would quite likely crack the battery.

One reason for the trip to the gunsmith.

From what I've read, post 1897, the 94 was made to be used with smokeless powder, not black powder. The barrel is stamped to that effect.

Hope I can shoot it, it would be a blast for my Dad to use his uncle's gun

Is it .25-30 or .25-35 Winchester?

    Lots of .25-35 available.

    GUNS!!!!!!!!

25-35 Winchester. Winchester and Hornady make it, but it’s hard to find. Earlier post said 25-30, my mistake

I have a model 94 in .32 Special made in 1908. It belonged to a WWI veteran who lived next door to us when I was a kid. He gave it to my Dad in a bushel basket and, as my dad had dropped hunting, it stayed in pieces until 30 years later when a gunsmith pieced it back together. I smiled when I shot that rifle for the 1st time. Amazing gun to really examine. Every piece of that gun was machined, as with the model 12. The craftsmen had amazing skills.

An interesting aspect of the model 94 is the concave metal butt plate. The butt plate is intended to fit the contour of the shoulder. Unless you are a smaller guy, you quickly realize people were a lot smaller 120 years ago when the top and bottom metal points of the butt plate bite into your meaty 2024 american shoulder.

Yup, my Marlin has that curved butt stock. Really uncomfortable!

My 1950's 94 is also curved, but very slightly. Its a real PITA to shoot on a bench or prone.
I've been shooting leverevolution out of that one with no issues.

Any thoughts on the question of using 6.5x52r in place of 25-35?

Took the 94 to the gunsmith yesterday. Turns out the rifle is a breakdown model. Pretty cool and apparently kind of rare

I just read your post and looked up the difference. Turns out mine is a takedown model as well. The engineering and machining on the takedown model 94s and model 12 shotguns is really impressive. Amazing to think that every part of these pre 64 guns was machined by true craftsmen. 100+ years later and the guns perform flawlessly.

I've only deer hunted a couple of times and never took a shot, but carrying the old model 94 in the woods somehow felt "right".

Showing up to shoot sporting clays or skeet with an old oft carried field grade model 12 always got the old timers' attention. If you shoot it well, it gets lots of attention form the German and Italian O/U crowd as well as the strange to me $3000 fancy semi-auto crowd.

Have fun shooting that rifle. It is a fun gun to shoot.
