Some clubs or training groups have rental programs for newbies - can be a good way to try out the sport and see if you like it. You also might find people willing to sell or loan their older gear.

Crosscut outside of Bozeman has a masters rec-level biathlon program. In normal snow years it seems like they also run some community biathlon races which provide rifles for the novice entrants: https://www.crosscutmt.org/events/co...on-race-2023-2

I briefly went down the rabbit hole of looking at biathlon rifles and...even the "cheap" option is $$$$...

But I did find that there are various vendors (including some of the actual riflemakers) that sell laser-tag rifle and target setups: https://laserwar.com/equipments/biat...-20-masret-set so I guess you can run your own biathlon anywhere you can skate.

Thats really cool, albeit still way too expensive. Also, while the laser thing would be kind of cool, it wouldn't be anywhere close to as challenging as actually shooting a real projectile that will be affected by wind etc.

And yea, the anshutz rifles are ridiculously expensive. I could get a decent snowmobile, or a 22 rifle and some cross country gear. Think is, I don't really care about using the real biathlon rifles. It would be cool to rend one, but most of what makes them special, isn't that they're adapted for skiing, but they're set up for the rules of the competition, and to be as competitive as possible time wise. Those fancy backpack style slings can be put on a 10/22 or scoped bolt action rifle, if they'll let you use one.

And if anyone wants to hold my hand and recommend some skate skis/boots that'd be cool too. i know nothing.

Savage Mark II FVT would work for biathlon. All you need is a sling. You could put a fancy aftermarket stock on it too, and have tons of money left over vs. Anschutz.

Skate ski/boot recommendation...Go for high end ski, and 2nd or 3rd tier boot. Then buy more skis, and then more, and when you think you have enough, buy another pair of skis.

Skis are so good right now that I would say get the best boots you can afford because I see a huge difference between, for example Rossi World Cup, XIUM, then X10.

After a very icy ski up Cub Creek this week I bagged it for the season. Thanks for the encouragement on buying the old rental setup. They feel quite nice and it sure is nice not having the deep Pilot binding channel to clog with snow after road crossings.

Yeah, I think I’m done too. It’s basically slow or scary icy and if you’re not up Cub Creek, there’s just too many bare patches, etc. Loup is still pretty OK.

Pretty cool for the American Cross Country Ski community. I've been working on this project for 1.5 years, and was in Minneapolis for 8 weeks leading up to the event.
We were pretty close to disaster with the weather leading up to the event.

That corner had a drop of about 40’. I guess all the tree dodging we do in the east had me ready for the jerry slalom.

I mean, if those are the skis you have, why not? Otherwise for that purpose, I’d pick a ski with fish scales, and only use skins when you have to.

It was a blast. The culture and vibe of that event are pretty impressive. I have to go back and do the point to point race sometime.

Season is still going strong in parts of the BC southern interior. Things really rallied in the latter part of the season. It kind of culminated with the recent BC Championships, which had a strong turnout and good conditions. Who would have thought that back in January?
We’ve had the rare combo this week of skiing midwinter conditions while it’s still light after work.

It’s been fun for us nordic nerds but looks like the weather’s going to start warming up in the next couple of days

Skis are so good right now that I would say get the best boots you can afford because I see a huge difference between, for example Rossi World Cup, XIUM, then X10.

The boot comment is just to save couple of $$. I'm not familiar with Rossi boots, but Salomon second tier is quite excellent, and S-lab has a different fit. And of course skis depend on many things, and I spoke out of my biased position. I ski on hard, old, cold snow for the most part, and am about 200#, so need to go to top of the line models to find stiff enough skis. Someone under 180#, and skiing on different snow probably has broader selection on skis.

Anyways, just got new S-lab skate skis, and S/Max boots this winter. Can comfortably ski for at least 3 hours where I started to have all sorts of fatique and soreness around 2 hours on my Equipe 9 gear.

I generally ski w a 50bmg for biathlon training.
