A 2023 Silverado, in base trim and no options other than double cab and 4x4 starts at 45k. IIRC a fully loaded Z71 Suburban cost about that much in 06-07.

    Shit is fucked.

That’s insane. I bought a base model 4x4 quad cab gmc 1500 with spray in bed liner and blind spot detection for 33k after all amortization on loan in January 2020. Last year the dealer wanted to buy it back for more than I would ultimately have to pay for it once I’ve paid the whole loan.

Whoa - just heard on NPR that Ford isn't selling any cars other than the Mustang.

Trucks and SUV's for the consumers.

If I go to the mall with the safeway/ liqor store/ bank the most popular new car is a crew cab 4x4 short box with a tunnel cover

"SUV" is just another name for station wagon with shitty styling.

The new grocery-getter is the crewcab half ton, with the employer vehicle the 3/4 or 1ton work truck. Only the youth seem to be OK with driving compact cars or small trucks.

Even my wife felt the pressure to drive our half ton over her Hyundai wagon more than necessary. Roads a bit dicey, rather drive the truck. Caselot sale at the grocery, need that cargo space. I think the (unspoken) peer pressure coupled with the comfy trim of what used to be a rough and uncomfortable ride has influenced the choice of the family wagon. The price of fuel is just another cost of modern living, like cell phones and data costs, that seems to be acceptable, or at the least ignored, as we try to keep up with the Joneses.

    Word!

Got a couple years before we have to replace any vehicles - but damn, I miss the handling of my old car (Acura TL). Do I really need higher clearance? Must. Resist. Marketing.

the half ton is for going to costco where north america fills the bed with stuff they don't need, then its used to take that stuff to the dump in a never ending cycle,

the local joke was they should build a costco out next to the Telkwa mall ( AKA the dump ) so folks could just take the stuff straight to the dump and save a trip

My Neighbor was talkin about his Tunnel cover so I asked wTF is a tunnel cover ?

Apparently its narth BC-ese for a Tounneau cover eh

Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they’re not tailgating you.

It's employer subsidized, it's long term loans combined w low interest until recently, it's familial wealth, it's company trucks, and it's the ability to borrow against skyrocketing home and land values that have allowed people to get in these hugely expensive trucks.

Potato farmers don't get any subsidies and once the grain market recovered from Trumps tariff debacle the farmers have been making huge money. The industries supporting the farmers are doing just as well. All the spending goes on to generate profit around town at locally owned businesses so they're all out keeping up w the jonses.

    Nice rig.

I love silver Fords. But two demerits for smoker's vents and the Monster Energy wheels.

A poorly equipped Tahoe is $60k, while a low level Camry is $25k. Seems a little excessive

    Wants not needs and all.

That and the Tahoe will carry 7 people, 5 in vastly more comfort. All while towing a boat or whatever behind it. It will also carry the luggage for 5 people with ease where the Camry won't. You can argue whether that utility is necessary or not but that comes in handy and is worth something.

If only there were some way to carry more stuff with a smaller vehicle... but you know, that's an impossible dream. Better to just get the Behemoth for $35K more.

We're talking about a Tahoe, right?
