Every year, automakers set aside a dollar amount for every car sold to budget for anticipated warranty repair costs, which include recalls. According to Warranty Week data, Ford towered over its competitors in per vehicle budgeting in 2021:

    Ford was $1,041 — up from $940 in 2020
General Motors was $713, up from $498 in 2020
Hyundai was $651, down from $1,171 in 2020
Stellantis NV was $630, up from $576 in 2020.

Meanwhile, Toyota fell from $423 to $401 in its fiscal year that ended March 31, 2022, and Honda plummeted by more than half from $782 to $347 during the same period, reported June 23. The other companies have a fiscal year that ends Dec. 31.

Ford has budgeted more for these repairs since 2017, when it was just $342 per vehicle.

In fact, Ford’s $1,041 accrual rate per vehicle sold in 2021 was its highest level ever, or at least since warranty expense reports went public in 2002, Arnum said. Second place was 2020 when Ford was at $940 and third is $591 in 2019.

My wife & I decided to take our 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel 5.7L Hemi E-Torque out to Idaho from Minnesota this year, as the weather was looking sketch for the drive, so we thought the truck was the better choice. Anyway, over the 3200 miles on the trip, we averaged just under 15 mpg. I was hoping that a pile of highway miles would maybe be a little better than that, but hope is a strategy, right? Anyway, when we got back and I paid the gas card off, I was thinking about better ways to do this.

So two weeks ago, I thought I'd see what I could get for my truck. I paid $56K for it - actually traded two vehicles at Carvana values, so I did VERY well in that regard - and walked out only having to pay for the add-ons and warranty I bought. I got a trade-in offer of $50K! I owned it for 15 months, and put 22,000 miles on it in that time. They had a Ram 1500 Laramie w/the 3.0 Eco-Diesel Turbo, and knowing that RAM is done with that engine (in trucks anyway), I talked to them about that truck. Sticker was $76K, but after all the incentives, the final number was $63K, so I jumped on it. Diesel around here is about 18% higher than gas, but in the first 1200 miles, I've averaged better than 25 mpg! Better mpg than my wife's Outback Wilderness w/2.4L Turbo. So far, there is NOTHING that I don't like about this rig. It's loaded! Lots of extra stuff I never would "need", but it's nice to have!

TLDR - I love the diesel, and it's really delivering on the MPG's! Should go forever, and come trade time, should be premium!

Got that same engine trans combo in my gladiator and have been nothing but satisfied with em over the first 30k miles. Screen says I'm at 24.8mpg and I've never reset it so I'm guessing that's some sort of lifetime rolling average.

Test drove the 2023 Chevy Silverado V8, 5.3l LT trim and the '23 Tundra V6 crew cabs. Like the way the Tundra drove and the inside felt more posh than the Chevy. Tundra motor definitely had a sweeter sound to it. But overall, both trucks handled well. Cabin space in the Chevy was definitely better and felt roomy compared to the Tundra, but I've been driving mid-size pu's my whole life, so that isn't a big deal.

I liked the styling of both trucks. I'd give a slight edge to the interior look and feel of the Tundra. Didn't pull the trigger on either vehicle. Just going to keep driving the old Frontier for now.

Damn, I'd really want to buy this if I didn't already have too many vehicles. Pretty good deal if in solid condition.

Hollee! That’s $17CND, which is more than I paid for the exact same ‘03 taco (with a few less km) in 2008. I tried to sell it for ~8k when we got the 1/2ton in 2015, and all I got was a couple assholes dicking me around trying to lowball me. I kept her, and at 270k kms will run her into the ground. Not as clean as yours I suspect, bumpers are rusting bad, and almost time for her 2nd timing belt kit redo. But for my use, she is perfect.

    GLWS!

Ten years ago I paid less for a 2500 with a cummins at almost the exact same mileage. Single owner, full service records. I recognize that is good deal but truck prices have left any semblance in reality.

I don't disagree that truck prices are totally out of control at this point though. At some point, the supply/demand 101 thing kicks in, but for now...

Cash in while you can. No doubt the trucks you’re looking at are inflated as well. If I were to sell mine I’d be looking for top dollar.

I really like my current 2018 F150, and I am seriously tempted by the newer ones, but they're super poorly built. Have driven 2 of them as rentals and both had weird issues with windows, electronics, etc. Maybe by 2024 things will be ironed out, but I'd be worried buying any cars built during the pandemic supply chain issue era.

F150 Lightning Pro now starts at almost 62 grand with destination for, lets emphasize, a base model work truck. Meanwhile a Lariat is almost 80k and a platinum starts over 100k. I believe this is the 4th price hike in a year on these models. Oh and you can't even order one currently so if you want one in the future, it is guaranteed to cost substantially more. They also had to pause production to work out issues, but that is just like any other Ford vehicle so I'll give them a pass on that one.

But yeah sure, EV's are the future when they cost more than the median annual household income.

Not even just EVs though, regular common folk trucks are getting up there as well.

A 2023 Silverado, in base trim and no options other than double cab and 4x4 starts at 45k. IIRC a fully loaded Z71 Suburban cost about that much in 06-07.

    Shit is fucked.

I really don’t understand how people are paying for their 80k trucks. I mean, you see A LOT of them on the roads even in places like Idaho Falls. Not much economy there, and I don’t think salaries have increased that much. More than likely there are a lot of people living with insane car payments.

I hear ya, but 06-07 was also 17 years ago which is kinda wild.

The most common loan term is 72 months. 96 month loans are available. Just make payments in perpetuity and you, too, can afford the latest luxobarge.
