No need for a guide if you pick a sunny day with a good weather forecast, just stay within the obvious tracks. Team up with at least one buddy. Otherwise basic rules of glacier skiing apply.
No need for specific glacier gear if you strictly stick to the main routes which are quite easy to spot.
This serious skier ended up taking his 480 euros to Verbier and had a grand ol' time. Maybe next time.

Most US skiers have no idea what “basic rules of glacier skiing” means; it just isn’t part of our system over here

Are any of you Euro mags interested in a pair of ON3P Wrens? I can deliver the pair I’m selling when I’m in your hood in two weeks visiting family.

wren 108 was a hell of an off-piste alps ski in my experience

How fucked is the snowpack following the sandstorm?

Looks like 10 degrees and sun across most of the alps for the next 10 days

Winter iS basically over. The next possible Model twitch with precip is for the end of March /early April.
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

Is it even worth bringing skis at this point? I have no experience skiing on sand. I hear certain wax can maybe help?

Honestly not sure if it is worth trying to ski, or maybe better abandoning hope for skiing and doing other things for a week.

It's snowing further east, with consistently low temps.

I fly out tomorrow to GVA. I have a car (can cancel) and a place in Cham (can cancel).

But I can't abandon the trip as I committed. Otherwise I'd stay and ski this huge US storm.

So what the hell to do? Is anything skiing good around Cham? Zermatt?

What do you mean by committed? Is there someone else involved?

If you booked on a US carrier, there is a good chance you can get credit for your airfare if you don't go and then use that money for a trip within 365 days.

If I was traveling solo I'd be cancelling for sure. Will be a a bummer to be in the sandy Alps while we're getting several feet of snow back home. I'm heading over for some quality time with my dad, and because the hotel I booked is now past the cancellation window. We may end up just doing a non skiing Euro road trip if things are really as bad as they seem.

The sand could be a good excuse to meet up with Tom for some raxing.

I was wondering what to do as well. I'm in Munich for work with Fri and Sat open with plans to ski. Not sure it will be worth it at this point. May not matter as my ski bag still hasn't made it (thanks KLM), but it's supposed to be delivered to my hotel tomorrow. I was just going to day trip to Kitzbühel, but may just stay around Munich or maybe just head home early since I'm solo. If any Munich mags want to connect, hit me up. I'll buy the kaiserschmarrn.

Same on my end. Supposed to go to Engelberg, leaving tomorrow night through Tuesday. Debating canceling. Sunk cost would be hotel, but so be it.

Good to hear. As long as my bag shows up, I'll head out there at least one day. Wasn't sure if it got hit with the sand like Munich did.

When I was a kid some from our group have been complaining about the snow to our trainer. He told us, if you have snow you can ski, there is not such a thing like bad snow, there are just bad skiers.
Nobody ever complained since then about the snow.

it was more sand then the light ones. but it is ok. specially on the slopes.
i just came home from pistebashing. first run 0830 the slopes were fast and really empty!

today in the first 2h it did not matter at all on the piste. as the sand was frozen.
it turned soft pretty quick. and i could definitely feel the sand as i am a snow connoisseur. but it was marginal. if i wouldn´t have known what was going on, i couldnt tell.
usually powder with sand feels a lil blunt.
corn with sand is less of a problem after two three daw refreeze cycles the sand has sunken in or collected in patches.

    dont worry it is fine.

ofcourse in certain spots it could be worse... Pyrenees, but thats far away from tirol.
    This 👍

@Summit. Gotcha. Good luck with your trip and LMK if you happen to end up in Vorarlberg. Also, worth trying to track down Gary Bigham if you're in Chamonix. He's a legend.

Thanks for the details. Is there a specific waxing technique you'd recommend? Or is special waxing not even a consideration?

I've stayed with VitaminSki 3x. I was going this time except I got the apartment hookup from my friend whom I am doing this favor for. I still almost said screw, but $ is tighter these days
