Or maybe complete incompetence. Or both.
Didn't read your link, but I assume at this point the operators already shut it down. Hazards are if they lose external power AND their emergency diesel, or if uncontrolled fire destroys things like power hookups, or if artillery strikes spent fuel pools.

That Russian complex is a VVER reactor which is a PWR, so much safer than a RBMK in many respects (it has a negative voice coefficient a containment building). So your worst case is a Fukushima, not a Chernobyl.

I talked to a friend in the Navy today, catching up about various stuff and had to ask if he knew anyone headed over. He said he's heard rumors of retired teammates heading over there on their own volition. When I asked why, he replied "for sport, I guess." God bless our operators. Those guys have been deployed more or less in nonstop in combat for the past 20+ years. They are not rusty.

I bought an engine from a guy who lived in Russia for most of the 90s. I hung out at this place for a week pulling the engine, pulling my engine, dropping his engine into my truck, drinking, listening to stories. The gist I got from him was that it’s a lot more acceptable to be drunk all the time there. Like, I don’t know if my impression is accurate, but my impression is a lot of people are drunk a lot of the time.

I can’t link it because I’m dumb but there is a great stickied post in r/volunteersforukraine that lays out the realities of Montuckeys suggestions for “us” even though he’s every bit “us” as we are. It also shines a light on just how many Westerners are putting everything on the line to personally assist.

It’s a much more complicated situation than his analysis contemplates.

    Maybe this will work:

Just to clarify, attacking a nuclear powerplant with armored vehicles and shooting the place up with artillery and mounted weapons falls clearly under Whirling Dervishes with chainsaws.

It's fucking insane. They are mad, or stupid beyond belief, or they have no control over their fucking forces.

Ummm…Cocximus, what, are you asserting the US invented mercenaries, and are actually good at it?
    Laughable.
Mercenaries are everywhere, and have been since civilization (war) began, I suspect.

Fair point. But there has always been military adventurism, as well.

    Ukraine

From a Russian friend in Moscow:

“RIA Novosti accidentally published an article prepared for the successful completion of the operation in Ukraine. The article was promptly deleted, but the Internet remembers everything
    https://web.archive.org/.../20220226...775162336.html
"Russia is restoring its historical completeness, bringing the Russian world, the Russian people together - in its entirety of Great Russians, Belarusians and Little Russians. If we gave up on this, allowing the temporary separation to settle for centuries, we would not only betray the memory of our ancestors, but we would also be cursed by our descendants - for allowing the collapse of the Russian land. "”

I hate war and death, but here's the thing. If Putin wins this, he won't stop at Ukraine. Anybody else remember their European history? So why don't you guys just hang out and watch as history repeats itself. First Germany took one little country and we watched. And they took another and we watched. So on and so forth until we were dealing with what we did.

Let's not repeat those mistakes. Nobody's suggesting we go into Russia to exact revenge. The world is just saying that Putin needs to GTFO of Ukraine. Not that much to ask. It will take force, tho.
