ETA: I don't know what I'm talking about. Could have been launched anywhere and circled

The first casualty of war is the truth. Propaganda and staged deceptions is how you war. I'm not a student of Tzu or Machiavelli, but I'm sure both of them discuss the importance of getting someone else to do your fighting. Most western media is dumb and easily played. Americans aren't much smarter. (including myself) Shoot, we're so anti-Putin*, we don't ask questions... many of us would find/create propaganda ourselves.

This video was posted yesterday, and I thought later didn't seem right to me

Look at the time, figure out where the sun is, where the missile comes from, and what cardinal direction that is. I think it's roughly west. I don't think there were any Russian forces in that direction. If so, this is not itself Russian aggression, but a product of it.

Further, the air is mighty clear for a major war zone. Though I also note the missile smoke indicates a decent breeze. And there wasn't much fighting near Kyiv, so clear air checks out.

    * For good reason. Fuck that guy. I'm struggling with his motives though. Don't know why he's fighting this war (and he claims the "special military operation" - no reason to doubt the overall narrative). He must know the world would respond badly. Did Putin present a UN Colin Powell briefing I missed? How did he think it was going to work out for him? Why do it?

I looked at RT last night and don't see any serious justification there (nazis**, rightwing nationalists in the east, 2014 coup). A bit about a temporary war halt recently in an attempt to negotiate and complaints about Ukraine closing contacts. For some reason Zelensky doesn't like the terms or want to meet in Belarus. At least they're talking (I hope that's true).

** is a Russian "nazi" any nationalist who isn't Russian? E.g. Ukrainians proud of their independence.

A former associate of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has allegedly earned 6.5 billion rubles ($101.9 million) from deals with the ministries of defense and emergency situations...

Scratch the surface just a little, and I'll bet you find out he's sitting on a lot of energy money, speaking of corruption.
Questioning his motives and his interests is far game. But did he provide valid information about how it all works related to energy, banking and what makes the price go up and down?

Hmmm. Do you know that Fukishima and Chernobyl left swaths of land that will not be inhabitable for centuries? This isn't some climate change will kill us in 2150 thing, it's now. And Fukishima is leaking radioactive water into the ocean, and will continue doing that for centuries. Now. So, you want that shit in your backyard? Not me. All of us up here breathed a sigh of relief when they finally closed Indian Point. There were evacuation route signs all along my road rides. Like that will do any good. And I'm pretty sure the people of Harrisburg are pretty happy Three Mile Island is down. They actually got sprayed by that stuff.

I'd have to hear it from someone besides one of Trump's con men. Really. Not trusted. Sounded like a commercial to get the oil patches back up and cruising.

It's strange that Fukushima still receives so much attention since not one death can be attributed to the nuclear accident.

Whereas the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami killed +20,000 people cost billions in damage and displaced more people than the radiation leakage. Yet, people still rebuild in tsunami zones, earthquake zones, and flood plains.

Of course the obvious problem with Fukushima is the same as the long term waste disposal problem. Let's not be dismissive of that. But let's also keep it in perspective. Research shows fossil fuel air pollution causes nearly 1-in-5 deaths worldwide each year. More than 8 million people worldwide die each year from breathing polluted air containing particulates from burning fossil fuels.

What gets ignored is even when something goes wrong with nuclear power, even downwind of Chernobyl, it's still less bad than air pollution from fossil fuels:

"Air pollution was already a growing issue in Kyiv .... last summer, the country's emergency service reported that air pollution had exceeded five times its normal levels — the result of burning fossil fuels, along with the city's hot weather and lack of wind. The situation got so bad last fall that smog caused extremely low visibility and forced flights to be delayed out of the city's Boryspil International Airport"

So how bad is nuclear power compared with the alternatives given otherwise safe nuclear power continually generates around 10% of the world's electricity?

OK, so I get the hand ringing over old technology. There are new nukes that would not have the issues of 50 year old technology. Let's get with the times.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Kudlow is the most consistently wrong person I can think of. I encourage anyone here to google Kudlow predictions and measure it against the observable reality realized. It is simply amazing that a single person could be so consistently incorrect. Binary choices with a 0% track record.

The truth hurts and triggers. Vibes as you heal. Maybe spend some time reflecting on you apologizing for Putin and your justification for this invasion instead of claiming that those of us who see it as a horrible travesty for the Ukrainian people are just pretending in order to see dead civilians we can use to score domestic political points.

I’m not interested in watching you pivot from deplorable comments and baseless accusations to fake concern and self righteousness.

It's not the technology. It's the human error part that fucks things up.

And, of course, putting a nuke square in the path of a tsunami zone or, on an earthquake fault. Like in your state.

Vitali Klitchko, the mayor of Kyiv says the city is surrounded making evacuation of civilians impossible. It’s just starting. The worst is ahead.

The Russian military is indiscriminately attacking the Ukrainian populace. The Russian military has shown a blatant disregard for civilian lives by using ballistic missiles and other explosive weapons with wide area effects in densely populated areas.

There is nothing more secretive than the aftermath of a nuclear accident. It took the fall of the Soviet Union to learn about many of the details of Chernobyl. Japan was and still is notoriously tight lipped about Fukishima. It's the nature of the beast. Nobody can get near the things for lifetimes. You sure nobody died? From all sorts of cancers? You wanna bet on that?

No need to bet because we already know the answers:

    - Researchers find few adverse health effects in wildlife exposed to low levels of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear accident.

    - And numerous studies indicate the health consequences of Chernobyl over the past 35yrs were small. About 7,000 excess thyroid cancers spread over the Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, but no convincing evidence for an increase in leukemias and no increase in solid cancer.

    - Those effects are orders of magnitude smaller than the health consequences associated with air pollution which is now the biggest environmental risk for early death not only for Ukraine but also worldwide.

That's nice. How many humans have died from premature cancer deaths?

Who funded that study, btw? Always follow the money.

The study was done by a multi-disciplinary team led by Dr. Kelly Cunningham at Colorado State University
