Pulled the trigger last night on the wife’s new pow skis. After much agony, debate, back and forth with the voices in my head and input from the collective, we went with:

179 Billy Goat w/ tour layup

We decided to go this way because the length and feel will be more traditional for her than the progressive mount and relative shortness of the Jessie 108 (in 176). She likes longer skis, having more tip in front, etc that just made the BG make more sense; her W88’s are also 179. Since the guys had a few in stock, ready to go, saved me a few bucks over full-on custom. Plus, I wanted the free hoodie. Good thing the wife likes the stock BG topsheet! Now, to see if she notices the asym or not...

stock BG top sheet is absolutely awesome this year imo, as were last year's as well

another solid one-two punch ON3P quiver Should be awesome. I do not think a w108 tour would have been wrong either, but they are a bit pricy as customs - even with the extra tee and anorak factored in.

re the hoodie - it is kinda interesting following ON3P on Insta and seeing how people keep on asking "why can't we by tees/hoodies/etc", without going down the buying skis route (as most seem to already own on3p skis, and that route thus far is the only route you can go down to buy merch from ON3P). I not know if it is caused by unwillingness to deal with merch sales due to limited capacity or failed sales in the past, but to each their own i guess. An option could also be to open an order window with a minimum number of sales to make each size/print, but again, it might necessitate effort that is needed/better spent elsewhere

and no - i do not want a hoodie or tee, i am very happy with "just" the skis

I emailed asking about soft goods to purchase and was told all the remaining stock is going with the sale bundles. So enjoy that hoody!

Thanks man! It was pretty much the cost factor that drove the decision, we talked about W108’s in a tour layup as well. Or even setup like her W88’s with stock layup but soft fiberglass and carbon. Ultimately, the ~$100 savings of the standard BG Tour won the day, the free hoodie was just gravy. Finally, she’s heard me go on and on about how much fun the BG’s are that she’s super intrigued to ride them. Powder has never been “easy” for her, so I’m fairly certain the BG was the right choice as it makes powder/soft snow super easy... At least it does for me...

Thanks man! When I was at the shop a couple months ago, the stock of soft goods was really low. I get the impression they’re more of a pain than they’re ultimately worth. Thus the infrequent availability, but that’s simply a guess. I have no true insight into it...

Powder has never been “easy” for her, so I’m fairly certain the BG was the right choice as it makes powder/soft snow super easy.

i mean, what can possibly go wrong with a big paddle up front and legendary busting through stuff abilities eh? I think they will be an awesome match making powder easy and enjoyable If nothing else, she will learn to pivot, so they should be just the right tools for becoming a better skier Will be fun to hear how she gets on with them

I was in the same boat as you, I couldn't get ahold of the company directly. I wanted some info on mount points, and he was able to help me. But if it's a business thing instead of an gear question you'll probably have to wait.

So...first day out. Skinning inbounds before the resort opens. 100 other people had the same idea.

Plowing through chop with tectons, maestrale rs 2.0 and steeple 116 184s. They aren’t my 191 Billy goat, but they are a damn fine ski.

How do you like the tectons? Those might be the next binding I pick up given the issues between the shifts and my maestrale's.

They’re great. Haven’t dimpled my boot toe yet, but I also tour icier skin tracks with the toe in ski mode and I shaved the toe bump down a bit.

Skiing is not like being in an alpine binding, but by far as close as pins have come, imo. It’s a nice ride. It feels like skiing, not like finessing. Functionality for skinning is great. Not nearly as fiddly as my old Dynafit verts or rads.

Their skape / rocker profile has me a bit interested in a pair sold locally, as they seem to be some pretty fun powder specialists, even if 186s might be pushing it for my size being 175cm/70kg. There might also be too much overlap with my current k116s, that are going absolutely nowhere

I have 181 prototype tour core Jeff 122s, and 184 BGs from last year.

Admittedly, I haven't skied either in anything more than boot deep powder. Comparing them based on the time I have on each, the J122s are definitely more jib oriented compared to the BGs. They felt more maneuverable in tight spaces, but that could be more because of the shorter length and more centered mount. They are both damp, but the BGs are definitely more stable. I'll add comparison pics layer

What I like about j122s is their rocker-flat-rocker profile with a lot of splay mated with an healthy bi-radius sidecut (and the graphics are killer) - meaning they should turn well on edge regardless of snow types. They are kinda heavyish, but I think that will help the shape be more crud busting friendly. They just look like a ton of fun, and with the jury still out on me+RES j122s could be a surer bet for how I like to ski. Do i need them though? No, not at all - but it sure would be fun trying them though.

Are those Cast modified STH2s?

Yes, they're cast sth2s. They're a bear to haul up the skin track but fun for the way down.

My j122 setup is the heaviest setup I've ever picked up aside from 200+cm downhill race skis. That's more the bindings, but the skis still have quite a bit of heft.

I have proto J122s as well, although I think mine have the inbounds core with maybe slightly softer glass. Paired with Guardian 16s, they are the heaviest ski I have ever used except for maybe OG 188 S7s with Dukes. They weigh a hair under 4kg each with bindings, I think something like 2.5kg flat.

I have not skied any other ON3P ski, but I have skied these in a variety of conditions. They do quite well on firm snow, considering their width. They turn pretty easily in any snow I've encountered, including Cascade concrete. Their great mass makes them adept at crud-busting. I have had some of my best resort days ever on them, mostly in funky snow conditions.

However, there are a few things I don't like. Mostly, I thought I would be getting spinny and jibby on my 122s, but they are so meaty I have a hard time in the air with them. My pair is also mounted pretty close to center, which means there's a lot of tail to contend with in tight spaces and not much tip to save me from going over the bars on landings.

Yeah, I see where you are coming from wrt the weight. I would think that perhaps putting Shifts or some other lighter weight, yet capable binding would help a bit, but if it is the ends of the skis that are heavy then that might not help a lot and might just make them more cumbersome / unbalanced.

My initial plan was to mount them with Pivots as i foresee about zero chance of me touring with them, even for slack country and to save on costs, but perhaps a lighter wide ski is a better option.

Again, it could be that with k116s in the quiver already that j122s might be a bit superfluous for my weight/stature, but it is always nice to speculate eh. That rocker line seems mighty tempting though

Anyone have any input on hardpack performance of the Kartel 108 186 vs Wren 108 184? Also looking at the Moment Deathwish 190, if anyone has input on that. I'm consolidating down to a quiver of one since I'll be a grad student the next few years and want something that will still be fun if I'm skiing back on the East Coast.

I have read the thread, but was more looking for input on edge grip on really firm EC conditions. I understand how the skis will vary quite highly in turn shape.

Regardless, doesn't matter as I just bought some Legend x106s from someone on here as that saves me $400 and I'm a broke student. Sad that I won't be owning any ON3Ps this coming season, but that hopefully won't last longer than this season.

Contrary to popular belief, we can get real ice in Tahoe too. Like, shiny glacial-looking boilerplate.

I usually bring out much narrower skis than 108, if I bother.
