So like exactly what the 8 plus and X retailed for?
If anything I feel like used phones have only gotten more expensive recently as people realize the law of diminishing returns has kicked in and just buy a couple versions old. There is only so much awesome you can get out of a pocket computer.
Live Free or Die
Don't forget about the $1449 version.

My Nexus 5x finally died - powered itself off, I can occasionally get it to boot to the service menu, but can't get any further - won't go to recovery mode.
So, what's the latest good deal on an unlocked no contract Android phone? Moto G5s, G6?
I have some googling to do, and need to order a replacement asap.

Carrier? I think the specs on the Moto G6 are a step back. However, the problem is how long will the phone get new code levels? A year ago I would have said the G5S Plus. I own an X^4 and am unerwhelmed for the price, would have preferred the G5S+. However I am on Google Fi. The G6 is probably the best price performance point at the moment from what I see. I just ordered a G6 play for one of the kids. Go for the full G6 if it is for yourself.
I'm on Total Wireless, a Verizon MVNO. So it should be an unlocked world phone. I would like the ability to take it overseas and use a local GSM SIM too.
Leaning towards the Moto G6 right now, it's likely to get updated longer than the G5 series, and it's $179 with activation on Total.
^^^ Googling this some more today -- apparently all the Movil brands (Total Wireless, Tracfone, Straight Talk, etc) are locked to the first brand they are activated on, for a minimum of 12 months. Only after that can you unlock it and use it on another carrier.
Guess that's why it's $179, and not the $229ish for the unlocked versions available elsewhere.
Me too.
Did an online chat with Google Project Fi, and they said that the boot looped Nexus 5x still had a trade in value if I reactivated on Fi. Also said that they have a promo on the (fully unlocked) Moto G6 at $199, again if I reactivate my Fi account.
Thinking about going back to Fi, at least for a few months - have an overseas trip in January where Fi international roaming would be useful. Then I could decide whether to stay with them or switch the phone to another carrier.
Be sure to add the simply everything plan, plus texting, it's free after you pay for it.

Asking about the heat gun?
Apparently the boot loop failure is a hardware failure due to some solder issues, and heating the phone either gets some solder to move or it causes some heat sensor to trigger and then the phone runs on some lower-power mode -- but still runs. I found this suggested "fix" from some google searches. Lots of reports and youtube videos on this.
I figured I didn't really have anything to lose, as the phone was a brick, so I heated it up till it was almost too hot to hold with bare hands, and tried to get it to power on in recovery mode -- and it did. I quickly selected the hard reset option and the phone wiped all its memory. Powered it off.
Google Fi's trade-in offer online says the 5X is worth about $45 if it won't power on, and $50 if it will, assuming in both instances that the screen is not cracked.
Did you already trade your 5x in? They warrantied mine for the boot issue a long time after the warranty was up. I talked to Google then talked to LG and they were the ones who warrantied it.
Is porting a number any big deal? ATT retention told me that mess ups can happen and numbers can be lost. Not sure if that's standard bs to cause apprehension or real. They said it takes a week, so call a week before month billing to avoid paying whole next month.
And then, how many people are on Comcast's Verizon? They are offering $45 unlimited and is seems the second line would be $10, plus whatever taxes/fees, curious what those are.
ATT sent me a iphone7 for $100, but it doesn't have any better coverage than my 6. Something got screwed up with the local tower and they won't own it.
I had Fi previously, then decided to switch to Total Wireless to get a ton more data and Verizon coverage for the same $ - but lost the international benefits.
I'll keep Fi through the January overseas trip, then decide about whether to go back to Total.
I haven't sent it in yet - Fi is sending me a return box for shipping.
What did LG do for you on the 5x warranty?
I've ported a number several times. Takes a couple of minutes. Hardest part is gathering all the info needed to provide to the new carrier - they want the old one's account number and PIN. I think a PIN is only assigned for porting use, it isn't something you usually have.
G6 play should arrive today for my kid.
I just grabbed a oneplus 6. It is slick and super fast. 8gb ram. Booyah!
