They told me that too, and I never bought a car. I spent it on weed, girls, and saving for college instead.

Have you had any USB connection issues since the update? Plugged mine into the desktop PC for the first time today and the "Connected Devices" screen in Settings shows no USB connections. Tried it on the work PC too and got the same results. Windows 10 and 7, respectively. Wife's phone is doing the same.

Have you tried unlocking the phone so that it is discoverable by the computer? At least on my Pixel, plugging a phone into a computer only charges it until the setting is manually changed.

On stock Android, 8.1 had a few nice updates, mostly aesthetic, but things like relocating the search bar to the bottom of the screen were appreciated. I don't have any actual numbers but the update did seem to hurt my battery life. Everything from the developer releases of P make it appear to be a more significant update, I am looking forward to the public beta this fall.

I never plug mine into the computer. The long string of Motos that I have owned have been notoriously bad at that so I never try anymore.

I've unlocked the phone to get into the settings menu. USB connections is grayed out, no option to turn it on.

Google for your phone and how to turn on developer options. That should allow you access to that function.

Turned on developer options and turned on USB debugging. Still says there's no USB connection when the cord is plugged in. Tried it with different USB ports on the PC, different cables, different PCs, and the wife's X4. Same deal no matter what.

Looks like it's definitely related to the 8.1 update and happens on OSX and Linux as well. Apparently completely disabling screen lock and restarting restores USB functionality, but as soon as you re-enable screen lock it stops working immediately. A fix is pending, but no time frame provided.

Made an interesting observation this week. I have a Pixel on Verizon that will be 2 years old this dec. Thing is a rock. Only in the last few months has the battery been showing signs of being tired where on a heavy day I go looking for an outlet.

I've been in Japan all week and have been using Verizon's travel pass which is essentially 3G service. First observation is that my coworker's S6 (also Verizon, also travel pass) has sucked balls compared to mine. I can easily get mail, browse (albeit slowly) and even hotspot. Her phone is essentially a door stop. Second observation is that I kinda like being on 3G. My battery is still 50% by the end of a hard day of use. The slower bandwidth is doing a nice job of allowing me to get shit done but not suck so much juice. Also, wifi calling kills it. No ld.

That's amazing. And funny because not only did I gave up on USB with my phone years ago, 3 phones ago, I don't use the SMS app either as I am on Google Fi and use Hangouts for texting. So I didn't notice either bug.

Well my power button is cracked and intermittently turns itself on and off. I'm not that interested in replacing the button, though it doesn't look like a difficult part to solder, this phone is wearing out.

Anyone have thoughts on a pixel 2 or pixel 2 XL? I have an old Nexus and I don't really want to bother with manufacturer skins of Android again. I'll keep the phone for a decently long time excluding some unforseen stupidity on my part so I don't mind paying a bit more for a phone but I don't need top of the line necessarily

Just got the Sammy Galaxy 9. Waaaaay the fuck better than the Motorola it replaced or the earlier iteration of the Galaxy. Fucking love it! They also gave me an Asus tablet which was k00l of them.

It matters what carrier. Google appears to be adding a wider range of phones that work with Fi.

Abe - 2nd the samsung galaxy (Note 2,3,4,5,6,8 probably skip 9) Note or S-line but, it's all about the carrier given your aversion to bloatware.

Which Nexus? There's probably still a Fi trade-in credit available for the 5X or 6P. Do it now before it bootloops and becomes a paper weight.

Pixel 2 reviews are universally positive, and the camera is supposed to be amazing. They're offering $150 in Fi credit if you buy an XL, which brings the price down to $500 which is a pretty good deal. Motorola minimally cunts up Android. Moto X4 and G6 are on sale now from Fi for $250 and $200, respectively, if you don't want to throw down for the Pixel 2, possibly even less if you can get some trade-in credit. I'm pretty happy with my X4 so far, especially considering that it only cost me $150 after I stacked trade-in credit for my 5X on top of the sale price they were offering at the time.

After my two year experiment with Fi, I'm dumping it to go (I think prepaid) on Verizon. Any good android phones under 200 bucks out there? I use email, web, pandora, paypal, and venmo apps exclusively. No need for cameras, latest tech.

I actually loved Fi but I'm doing a ton of traveling the next couple years for my new business and unfortunately their rural coverage kinda sucks. Calls and texts are fine but I need to be able to process payments via phone and have been getting skunked more often than not.

Any differences on the Verizon network between prepaid and regular service? Prepaid seems like a better deal for my average data usage (1-3 gb a month) comparatively. I'll be packaged with my wife who uses about 5 gb, so we'd be in the 85 ish a month range, vs 120 or so for the unlimited non prepaid plan.

Have you already switched to Verizon? If not, get the X4 or G6, activate it to lock in the sale price, then switch to Verizon. Since you're on Fi now, there's a good chance there's also some trade-in credit available for your current phone.
