    Lol. Congrats.

I was surprised when looking through ih8mud at the number of people report misthreading their iridium spark plugs, either on their own or by a pro.

The other fun thing that happened with my 100-series that left me stranded was when the metal piece at the base of my ignition cylinder broke. Luckily for me, it happened in a parking lot that was walking distance from home where I could leave the truck. It was fun driving around for over a week using pvc pipe and a narrow long screwdriver to start the truck.

Sorry man, I couldn't resist. I've always liked these trucks. I had a Lexus version for a little while and the family loved the space. I do hope your saga with the head ends up working out.

Thanks. Hoping not to accrue credit debt dealing with this. I didn’t realize this was “a thing” until it happened to me.

Both mechanics that I’ve talked to have told me that replacement of an ignition coil should be a trigger for changing plugs as PM, even with iridium plugs, for these engines. That has not been my MO on the truck to this point.

No pics, but some good projects this summer.

Put a 2" ADF lift into the Forester, then not long after the transmission quit, - not related AFAIK. Managed to diagnose a bad solenoid in the the thing and replace it - 1st time ever digging into a transmission repair. So far holding...

Recently, when I start the truck (2006 sierra 3500 LBZ) cold, when I begin to move forward (doesn't start when I put it in drive, only once I start to roll forward) there is a rustling sound that comes from the passenger side, sounds like from below the glove box. It had happened previously but I thought it was my speakers (old and shitty). I've got a new sound system in now and it is still happening - coincides with the colder weather I believe. Goes away once the truck warms up. Any ideas what it could be? From what I've read there is no cabin filter where I'd though maybe it was crap/leaves/etc in the cabin filter but apparently this can't be the case. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Oh, and I did my brakes recently (3000 km ago) and they've started squealing - again, only when I start driving. Once I've stopped at a few intersections, it's gone. Have to swap to the winter tires in not too long and was thinking of cleaning the rotors while I have the tires off, but not sure what would be causing it. Again, any thoughts are appreciated.

Any chance the 2 are related? Not familiar with your specific setup, but the rustling may be broken/missing shims, clips etc. For the squeal, lubrication on moving parts (guide pins, and ears of the pads where they ride in the anchor bracket) is key. Clean and lube as needed. Scuff the pads and rotors with sandpaper. If you used cheap aftermarket pads, noise may be unavoidable.

^ Unlikely they're related but who knows? The rustling honestly sounds like leaves being rustled by a breeze, except inside the dash by the passenger's foot area. I lubed everything when I did the brakes but I'll check it when I have the tires off - ACDelco ceramics on the fronts (which are squealing) and Raybesto's hybrid pads on the rear (not squealing... yet).

Went through a similar thing recently with our 14 Forester. Cleaned the brakes and it went away. Another possibility to consider - did you put in new rotors or was the brake job pads only? I've never had a lot of luck with pad slaps even when there's plenty of meat left on the rotor.
Damn, we're in a tight spot!

I'd jack it and spin the wheels 1st thing in the morning and see what you hear.

I mean the truck, not your standard everyday jacking it in the morning.

well, engine damage was pretty bad. and need to find a new engine. "piston took some hits" was the mechanics words. rod or piston noise, probably wrist pin. quote of $2800 for labor. mechanic is making calls for used engine. I have no experience with this. can any 2uz-fe engine work? reached out to an old friend that works at a used auto parts shop in LA to get free advise or ball park cost range to expect. not sure if he'll respond. mechanic indicated that cost would be related to the # of used engines in stock and the # of miles on that engine.

^^^ $2800 for labor at $85 hr is 32 hrs work. give or take your labor hr.

I paid $2300 in labor for a re-build 3 years ago. They charged $85 shop hr labor.

    1. Check the space behind the splash shield is clear.

Whomp,. What year is your cruiser? I'll try to do a little research. Where are you located? I'll see if I can find a price range, but I would imagine, given the quantity of trucks out there, you ought to be able to find a new motor for like a thousand bucks give or take. Little research on mud should tell us if any 2uz will work (I think it should, but let's be sure).

Thanks. I'm guessing that my mechanic is quoting from one of the timeguides. i've always paid less in labor than he's quoted me in the past. i know my mechanic has worked on 100-series land cruisers/lx's before, but not as much as tundra's and sequioa's with that engine. but he's been professionally wrenching on toyotas since the 90's and they are his personal vehicle make of choice.

thanks for the offer! it's a '99. Grass Valley/Nevada City CA area. i haven't looked at the mud site about this yet, but this ebay site claims that there are 58 vehicle models that are compatible. it implies that a 2uz-fe engine can be put into any 2uz-fe vehicle.

my mechanic believes but is not 100% certain that all 2uz-fe engines are the same. the handful of junkyards that he deals with track their inventory in a manner where they would provide an engine (or other part) that is compatible for the needed vehicle. my understanding is that the balance is cost versus warranty versus delivery costs/options versus # of miles. he's a one-man shop. i'm not sure how much effort to expect from him finding me an engine.

Sounds like generally they are the same. Your 99 does not have vvti (variable valve timing) so you should be looking for one that does not. The Land cruiser and Lexus lx model engines were made in Japan and use forged rods blah blah, better. But most non vvti 2uz should work, but some of the accessories may or may not depending on model. Here is a thread worth a read for someone in your predicament. It does sound like you should be able to find a good motor for under $1k though. You'd want to grab the whole motor and wiring harness and ecu.
Also, make sure your motor comes out of a crashed vehicle. Because vehicles were working when they met their demise.

I keep see conflicting information, people saying there are differences between tundra and LC motors. I would focus on getting a Land cruiser or lx motor.

My alternator went out the other day on my 944 turbo. So I decided to put a Nissan quest one in. Not there yet, but almost. It is significantly smaller than the stock Bosch, puts out more amps, and runs cooler. Oh yeah, a lot cheaper.
First gotta do some gridning to the bracket that holds the alternator, as well as on the mounting ear of the alternator of itself.

Shocks showed up for the cruiser, so of course had to put those in and hit the local "trail"...

    Sloppy steering rack bushings...
Watch the whole rack move back and forth when I turn the wheel. Car felt like it wandered, and just loose steering.
    https://youtu.be/EuzbAoIot0Q

So I got in there and replaced all three steering rack bushings, and while I was in there, did the front sway bar bushings.
Made a big difference is steering precision. You can see the rack no longer moves.
