How do the W98s compare to W108s?

Softer for sure, but it makes them pretty versatile for a 98mm ski. So way better in bumps for example, but they do have a speed limit. I’m not completely sure I’m going to sell them yet, depends on interest.

Nothing of the same variety - they're a fantastic 98mm ski. I have a 91mm resort ski that I like for groomers and bumps... and if it's softer than that out I tend to just use my Wren 108's. I will be likely ordering some Kartel 108's in a touring layup to mount with Shifts for a slackcountry do-it-all travel ski. I'd keep the W98's but at a certain point the quiver capacity is limited by pronounced eye rolls from my wife, and possibly revenge purchases! Heh. ;-)

*Disclaimer.....I am an EC part time shop guy that will be purchasing some Wren 108’s to replace my once beloved Shiro. I actually finished this season with a quiver of 0.

Am I f’n crazy for waiting till this summer to jump on some 2019’s......or should I be jumping on all this older stock floating around?

-Is it just money I would be saving with used/older stock?.....or do I really have the need for the 2019?

Can’t answer that, but I can say, b/c of this thread I will be throwing down some coin very soon to get my quiver back into the positive.

I could not go skiing this weekend, so i just mounted my 184 custom stiffer 2017/non-asym BGs instead - happy times - I think they look rather nice. It will be interesting to try BGs with a full alpine setup. My 179 asyms with tectons and i have not been a 100% hit yet. My initial plan was to mount these with Shifts, but got tired of waiting.

Got to Demo the 98 Wrens and Kartels this weekend at Smuggler's Notch, had a blast on both. Shane working the Demo booth was awesome, had answers to my many questions and chill guy to boot.

Also glad I got a used 17-18 108 Wren in 185 waiting for the next day there's some pow about (probably next season) or I'm out west to try... Thanks N1CK.

No surprise to me, but I really fell in love with the 98 Kartel and think I'm gonna pick up the 18-19 version this off season. A question about it: I rode the 181 and felt good on it, think its the right size for most of the skiing I do (EC trees and the "moving glades" of crazy packed trails on many of the VT resort weekends). That said, at 5'9" and 190 lbs I am usually riding something a bit bigger and worried about top end stability.

SO my question is, would adding extra carbon make sense? I don't want to mess up a ski that seems pretty perfectly balanced as is, but curious if others have had good experiences with that. AND I'm seriously considering getting the wood veneer topsheet because it is so feckin beautiful, does this change the flex profile/stability at all? I'll probably stick with the stock build but just wanting to get a sense of all my options (cause its half the fun of buying new gear after all)

I’ve got 186 K98’s with extra carbon and wood veneer (i’m 6ft 195lbs). I love the way they ski. The extra carbon gives them more support in the tail for exiting turns (very snappy and add powerful exits/setup for next). Additionally, it helps the tips deflect less and turn them into reasonable crud busters. If you’re looking to make the K98 a little less ‘jibby’ The extra carbon seems to do that well. They are hard to keep on the snow because they’re so much fun popping off stuff (something my wife gives me grief over considering i’m nursing a Grade 3 AC separation in my shoulder).

I will say that they don’t pivot anywhere near as quick as my Billy Goats in soft snow, so they’re a little more work in the trees than the Goats are... However, my K98’s are my daily drivers and see the most use in a typical season. They rail groomers and let me have fun when I’m skiing with the wife and not off in the trees chasing Pow on my Goats.

191 2014s are easier to ski than 189 asym. Slightly softer and a little easier to break the tail loose.

I’d guess the 189 have a higher speed limit, but I never found the speed limit of either ski.

Dude! I asked for a RES tipped jib ski in a Billy goat width. But Scott told me that the prototypes weren’t great and encouraged me to just get a Billy goat - which I already owned.

The 191 goat really feels like a jib ski next to the 189.

I have the 11/12 191's since new, probably 100ish days. Now have 3 days, all at least 5" of fresh, on this year's 189's (I think in the stock layup).

Much different ski, it feels like I'm in for another improvement in my form. Similar to the lesson I got with my first BGs, which is a very good thing.

I considered the SG, but got talked down by more sensible people.

I think my 2017 189s (pre-asym) are more versatile than the older versions though. They handle variable snow conditions a little better. I haven't skied the 2018 or 2019 asym 189.

I think a custom BG with the softer 19oz(?) fiberglass would be a fun ski.
