slightly off topic...
looking to take a drive early next week and hit up something other than Oregon. Mostly considering Washington as I've never skied Crystal, Stevens, Snoqualmine....
Worth hitting any of those or should I just hoof it up to Baker? Probably crash for a night or two so let me know if you know cool places to stay.
thanks dudes
Don't know any cool places to stay. I used to own a really cool place not too for from Snoqualmie/Alpy but sold out to move to a mtn town. Xtal is worth a visit. Semi-decent side country terrain. Or you could just keep driving until you cross the border (passport required) and hit Whistler.

I was on my way up yesterday, Mon, little later start from Pdx. than I wanted, given the holiday. Stuck in traffic even before Sandy(thought it could be an accident, but, no, just the choke points of Sandy, lights, etc.). Speed resumed to avg. 40-45 mph. all the way up to Rhododendran, where it began slowing to a crawl again. I couldn't take it(and the thoughts of the parking lot, etc), and bailed back to Portland. And I just wanted/intended to go to Skibowl. . .
Treated myself to a nice breakfast/brunch back in the city, with a mimosa to help soothe my nerves. . . Next time.
Yeah - skied WP a few years back. I've skied Baker and WB as well - just wanted to see if the Seattle-ish mountains were worth hitting.
Crystal's been on my list but I have no idea about Alpental, Stevens, Snoq...
I’ve never been to Crustal, and when I go it will be on skis, not my board.
Alpy is great on or after a pow day, especially when things stay cold, but if it’s been warm conditions can get real funky real quick due to the elevation. Good steep terrain with a great small resort locals crowd. I skied with ACH and FA a few years back and it was like they knew every troller and regular skier on the mountain.
Snoq has never been on my list because my understanding is that across the street (Alpy) is where the real terrain is. I’m sure some locals are glad to keep that perception alive.
I love me some Stevens but it’s so much better midweek, super popular on the weekends due to long cruiser runs and high speed quads. Parking can be a real junkshow if you don’t get there pretty early. But it’s got great vertical, really good sustained steep skiing, some sheltered, some open, great chutes here, lots of aspects to chase the wind or sun when conditions are less than perfect. It’s gotten pricier with less opportunities for discounts in recent years.
Enjoy your trip!
Oh yeah, re: PDX traffic, holiday weekends from Tahoe back to Bay Area, if it’s snowing, is usually an 8 hour drive. If it’s not snowing then maybe you can do it in 5. 4 hours to a growing PDX isn’t gonna get any better, the economy continues to grow but the infrastructure doesn’t. Enjoy what you’ve got now!

Crystal is almost always a worthwhile destination
VFW hall in Baker has the best drink deals. Walked over there with the nice couple that bought our beers at Barley Browns. Round I bought was like $18 and included 3 double shots and a big probably 18 or 20 oz domestic beer with a shot.
The sweet champagne pow at ALMR was priceless!
I met a couple at MHM Sunday who flew up from SF just for this storm
while the turns were sweet that day, i was a little surprised
Tahoe must really be hating it if our one storm is the best shot at pow
i hope some of you peeps are skiing tomorrow morning
cold snow today/tonight & cold sun & low wind tomorrow morning
Next sunday and monday look pretty sweet too.
if pdx area school districts close tomorrow we might get a bonus day
Here's to hoping. My work will close or delay if the Salem Keizer schools do. Getting ahead on everything here so I can justify taking the whole day off if we get delayed.
Is there any fresh snow to slash on Hood? I stopped at SkiBowl last night on my way home from ALMR and saw the aftermath. Upper bowl was completely shredded.
thanks everyone - gonna see if I can swing an Alpental/Crystal trip
fine
PPS is closed...hmmm, take the boy up?
No snow in Salem so I'm back at work. Didn't really feel like burning time off for this morning. Pretty tempting to skip out early and check out the bowl.
please tell me someone is enjoying this weather today
i'm working
