Silly me, for some reason I thought a timing chain lasted pretty much forever, hence my bitch about my timing belt needing a change every 90k. Guess I will be quiet now.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Wow, that's intimidating. This is why for my next project car I'm getting another RX-7. At least THAT one I can easily pull/rebuild the ultra-simple motor. It's like a 6 beer project.

Why Germans build their motors like this boggles my mind. I know they run awesome (until they don't), but sheesh talk about over-engineered! They could take a lesson from the standard GM 350 like our beloved LS.

The funny thing is that they "designed" this motor in this fashion so it never needs a timing chain replacement

Audi makes rad cars until they break. I love my v6 twin turbo b5 s4 avant 6spd manual. I love it even more when it runs.

I think that was Audi's thought too. Hey, let's put a chain in there so it wont ever be a problem! They forgot about the tensioners though. Good thing they turned the engine around to make it fit, because now you have to drop the whole thing to get to the chain. Now that the whole fucking engine is on a hoist, may as well drop another grand or two to replace other shit stashed away in there.

I just had to let my A4 Avant go for nothing b/c the timing chain tensioner went, toasted the upper 1/2 of the engine.... bent every valve. Luckily I knew a mechanic who loves them and bought it....

That thing drove like a dream compared to the subaru I replaced it with...
Now it's a game to see if I can avg over 36mpg though... so their is that.

My brother in-law just bought a 2018 Q5. Tried to steer him to a something more cost-conscious like Subaru, but he wanted the "status." My sister is pissed because now they have a pricey car payment, and college costs to deal with...

If you are under warranty you are fine. I like the other expensive to maintain German brand. But you don't have to remove the front clip to do maintenance on it.

This all reminds of why when I get my next Euro wagon (and I inevitably will) it better damn well be CPO. Thank God my Volvo's been pretty bomber so far with about 150K on the clock. Transverse straight 6 always makes me double-take, though. Can't believe they crammed that thing in there sideways. Been super easy to maintain so far (world's easiest spark plug swap), but I rue the day this thing starts nickel and diming me. I better start saving my pennies now for the next ride, huh?

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe this is an issue anymore. At least not with the 4cyl TFSI engines?

You really want a little turbo 4 in your heavy ass wagon? I guess with an auto it's ok, but my audi was a turbo 4 with manual, and that combo sucked balls. And it was going to need a timing belt in 30k, and yeah, you were going to have to remove the front clip to do the timing. It was an 06. Maybe they have fixed it, but the underlying issue is that because the front diff is in the transmission directly behind the motor, the motor sits really far forward.

    Gas is cheap.

Look at the front of this car, awd bimmer,

And look at the front of this car, audi Quattro,

Guess which one has the engine hanging way out over the front crammed up against the bumper?
    Guess which one handles better?

Sure. I own a 335 that's a blast to drive. I don't compare it to the purpose of my Allroad, or the wife's XC70 T6. (I prefer my car with the engine hanging over the rear axle for real fun )

The Allroad is a fun to drive little thing that does kid and dog hauling really nimbly, and has a great torque band.

My only point (question) was that the timing chain issues are not a problem anymore. And it's not jammed up front anymore either (after poking around a bit online)

    Either way, viva la warranty!

And both of my cars in those pics are sedans.
But I do really like, (and she loves!) the e61 530xi wagon. Very nice car.

I used to own one of those (535xi) wagons. Great snow car, I think x-drive is better than Quattro. We had an A4 Avant at the same time with the same tires and the BMW was better. Love the smoothness of a straight six and, with Dinan Stage II reflash, it was pretty quick too. Reliablity was an issue though.

Any Audi 2.0t people ever have p2279 (Air Intake Leak) code? CEL came on today. Rough idle, underpowered at times, etc. PCV?

Intake air leak means that the maf sensor is reading X amount of air, so it gives it Y amount of fuel, and when the ecu analyzes the output in the exhaust, the results don't match up to X air and Y fuel, so Ecuador says there is a leak in the intake somewhere. On a turbo car with an intake leak, the engine will run too rich while under boost (because metered air is escaping the intake under pressure), and it idles too lean (because unmetered air is sneaking in through leak due to vacuum). Leak will get worse, car will begin to get progressively more sluggish, and poor running. Fix it.

If you are handy, Google pressure testing an intake. The hard part is finding the leak. Once you find it they are usually pretty easy to fix.

Wouldn't start first try every time. Rough idle, underpowered, wanted to stall at lights/stop signs.

Before I took it to the shop I was 90% sure it was the PCV based on symptoms. I could have ordered the part and changed it myself pretty easily, but I was running around trying to go to job interviews, etc.

Took it to my new favorite shop here in Bozeman (Auto Works) and they had me diagnosed and repaired in 1 hour. As suspected it was the PCV. It was worth the labor for them to have me fixed and out the door on Thanksgiving eve instead of me possibly not having a car until sometime this week if I tried to fix it myself.

Runs like a dream once again. Good to know that they have several clients with 2.0T audi with over 200k on the clock. I'm at 125k and the mech said after he road tested mine that it has alot of life left.

Ouch. p2188 code thrown today. WTF?

It's another "fuel system" code. Was running so great for 3 days since the PCV was fixed and then this AM on my way to work the CEL came on again. Now it's idling rough again. Called the shop and they said they would look into it and call me back asap.
