No one would be impressed by it, but damn if it isn't a great car. My second one. Latest reliability puts it side-by-side with Toyota.

    2) It kicks out O3 (ozone). Not toxic, but irritating if exposed for a while. The ozone dissipates almost immediately upon turning off the machine and opening doors/windows.

iii) I'm picturing an epic showdown in my head. Invisible chemical carnage.

    VS.

Shit man, my gf has a "piece of shit" Kia whatever the small econobox is. She drives the hell out of it, 225k miles, oil changes every 12k miles, 30 mpg at 90 mph... fucker just keeps on doing its thing! It's even geared so it doesn't really feel slow. Great car for what it is. Think it's an 06.

What train did you take to Ohio and how was that experience?

I took the train from CLE-CHI-ABQ freshman year of high school. I had no clue that Amtrak still ran through the state.

    Lake Shore Limited

Amtrak is so easy and cheap. Share a seat with an Amish couple and their 20 kids. What could be better?

I should add that we went right through Ashtabula during last week's 2 foot lake effect dump like it was nothing. Glad I was in a train and not driving although the ride back home sucked (90 East in Ohio was closed). Good times.

Well look at that! I bet it was actually a very pretty ride during the snowstorm (even better if from the bar car). I saw that on the national news - looked like one hell of a massive pileup.

$100 says the timing chain is starting to rattle...
I'm starting to think that I should buy all the nice ones and just knock out the timing guide job and flip em.

Is it on the bumper side of the engine or full removal needed?

It's not an audi thank god. So I think you just gotta pull the fan and radiator makes it a bit easier. But there is a fair amount of engine disassembly required, vanos, tensioners, cam chains, etc... And a lot of while you are in there parts that make it a pretty big job. I looked for a while for an e39 540i, but a pre requisite was that they have a record of the chain and guides being done, and only one did, but the car had lots of other issues, including the fact that it was an automatic. Every other one I looked at needed to have it done, and I think was the impetus for selling.

Drove my 540i up to solitude today, it was pretty fun. I like to put my foot into it.

Saw a very well kept e34 540i sedan at the gas station today and gave the guy a thumbs up. Owner walked by and said he wanted to trade it for my e91 wagon.

Regular ol Bmw circle jerk we got going here. I do think they are the best cars. New ones are a bit complicated and build quality has suffered a little bit, but what else you gonna get? Nothing that I can think of.

In the years you like to buy?

Mercedes R129. Maybe not your style but it is a very fine hand built roadster. Still looks good too.

I actually did a little research on those recently cause I was behind a nice one the other day in town. Nice looking. I prefer the older sl models. Test drove a 450sl 83 I think? Was cheap, and ran reasonably well, but would have nickled and dines me to death. Plus I know the the e30 platform much better, so when that one came along I jumped on it.

My dad is into those and had one for about 5 years. It was a cool car, but I think he decided to sell it when the it was time for a new convertible motor and top which was gonna cost more than the car was worth. I think it was $8k or something.

There are what appear to be some really nice cars on or linked through BAT right now.

    04 Blazer

I've had it from 108,xxx to 159,xxx over about 6 years. Up until a couple months ago I couldn't say anything bad about it. None these repairs are really surprising per say, everything I've had to replace has been original except a few parts, but it does get frustrating when it leaves you stranded somewhere.

I did not buy my M3 as an investment but looks like if I could stand to park it(not going to happen) and just keep it pristine it could be one.

I know someone asked before but what sites do you all use in a good ol' unicorn search?

I've volunteered to waste good hours of mine to help a friend poke around for a few cars he's got in mind for a weekend driver.

I've used ebay, cars.com, autotrader... not much else, but I've had good luck in the past. What'cha got?

He was kinda inspired by this article:
