If you have a 10yo Bmw, the valve cover gasket will leak. Then you can do this.

Trying to help a 74 y/o friend find a decent Forester (tall, wants upright seating position, ease of entry). Can afford between $10-15K. Any tips on years, features/packages, best sites for info?

All done. Valve cover gasket replaced and cracked pcv pipe repaired. Some Yahoo had tried to repair the pipe with electrical tape. It is a flexible stiff plastic pipe. So pulled it all off and repaired with rescue tape...

I've used this stuff for a bunch of weird shit. Well see how long it lasts. Maybe I'll order the actual part to have on hand when it fails.

If I had to pay someone to work on my car, it would probably be a corolla.

Money spent maintaining the Audi may even buy all four of the other vehicles.

Another way of looking at it is you can buy the Audi, or 9 of the Aerostars.

In my opinion the smart money is on a fleet of Ford minivans from the late 80s.

I'm trying to downsize and get more efficient. The household has a 2012 Impreza in good condition owing $4500. The mileage is not good enough for a commuter car and the awd is redundant to second vehicle. I need something that will reduce the debt owed on a car and increase mileage but be reliable since I can't afford cascading repair payments.

Buy a used 3-4 year old Nissan Leaf with 50k miles for 6k and nearly completely offset your monthly (if u borrow) in fuel savings. Seriously.

If all you want is a fuel efficient commuter there are a few high mileage (but Toyotas run forever) examples of Pri-i on CL in your area.

Sell your Impreza to Carmax, hopefully for a bit more than what you owe and buy this one:

    Run the wheels off it.

Otherwise, if you're only looking to drastically cut what you owe on a car you should just consider finding a high mileage shitbox with fwd.... or get yourself this bad boy. Indestructible. Offer $2500.

Haha. I had a buddy in college who would walk up to shitboxes like that with ridiculous modifications, usually owned by hillbillies, and ask them with a straight face, "is that custom man?"

The deadpan looks and excited responses were classic.

I missed this. Definitely get the 240 wagon then.

Or, see if you can find any VW diesels in your area that are subject to the buyback program. See if buying it will net you more when you turn it in for the buyback.

    Profit.

The answer to your inquiry, that puts you right in that price wheelhouse, is any turbo 2.5 liter from 06-08. Legacy GT, Forester XT, outback XT, or Baja XT. A bonus is that I believe the turbo models come with every feature. I could be mistaken about that, but that was the case with my forester XT. Good luck finding one. I looked for 6 months to find a pristine one in dark silver.

I did this. It works as advertised. The Leaf is our grocery-getter / day care run car. The suby wagon gets used for trips out of town and bad weather days.

I'm curious in the northern CA land of PG&E and their tiered rate system if a leaf would result in jumping tiers and very high electric bills if charged at home....

Possibly cheaper than a corolla would be a geo prism. Same car.

A roommate in school had an 80's corolla (I think) wagon that he spray painted in a fun way. Two of the door panels read, "the love machine". Always fun to drive and easy to spot in large parking lots.
