That's probably the difference. I don't know anyone who's successful here for whom being successful here wasn't their top priority for most of their adult lives, long before they got here. Happens all the time, but not by accident.

When I read this I hear it in Warren Miller's voice.

Did I miss where I can enter my stats to see if I'm cool or not?

I'm thinking proximity to a lift and ski days are in my favor but yearly income and amount of pasta based dinners are gonna take the quotient down a few pegs.

It is an interesting topic where economies are driven by people who have no real interest in the community that do the work and the scene at a lot of resort towns becomes so divisive between the locals and the tourists.

Is it growable or even sustainable?

The reason we stopped going to JH and Big Sky was essentially because of the hostility locals showed us. (Besides the Sublette quad ruining Pepis).

On the one hand, I get the issue that locals often get treated like shit by tourists. And yeah, we were tourists staying at the Hostel or in Bzmn, but we show respect to people and definitely didn't get anywhere near reciprocity on that count. Maybe it's plain old competition for resources, but the ridiculously highschoolish exclusion shown wasn't something we wanted to experience let alone support.

Whoever previously suggested that the resort communities demand respect is partly on the mark I think. Whether that's via organic community intolerance of assholes or more structured policing (which costs money), I think that's part of the solution.

Another, harder part is the carrot aspect: how does one encourage the tourists to give a shit about housing, transportation or health care and provide a mechanism for them to do something about it.

I never quite understood this. When I lived in PC the Tourists were called "Ducks" in a sort of affectionate sort of way. It was accepted that they paid the freight, sometimes were a bit annoying but were crucial to the town's economic health. (This was before PC really exploded).

When I moved to Big Sky the Tourists didn't have a name because the place was so quiet and the hostility towards them was pretty absent. FF to around 2000 when the place really started to go off and the tram line began to get big and then.......... Gapers, Tourons and a lot worse.

It was right around that time I recall a letter to the GM from a Midwestern mother who had just been there questioning why on Underground Dirtbag day all the locals were such stark-raving assholes to the guests at the bottom of the Gondola, and (insert humor here) why so many of the young ladies were wearing Dildos and other sexual appliances and screaming "Fuck".

Growth is great until it becomes not so great.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Here is a good example. Breckenridge has exploded, and parking is a fucking disaster and the town is congested. The town passed a 4.5% tax on lift tickets (basically a sales tax that applies exclusively to Breck Ski Area) with the promise that they'd build new skier parking with the tax dollars so Vail Resorts assented. As soon as the tax was passed, the town decided they'd rather not spend the taxes on parking. Instead they decided it would be better to add a "Free Trolly" to Main St, try to exclude more cars from town and improve pedestrian infrastructure with heated sidewalks, and there were calls to add roundabouts to Park Ave (Colorado State Highway 9) in order to "make traffic travel more slowly and safely."

Needless to say Breck Ski Area/Vail is super pissed right now about the bait and switch and doesn't want to be subject to a $4 million extra yearly donation to the town.

The other major controversy around here are the major closures of primary roads on busy weekends to support road bike races/triathlons. That has a lot of locals and tourists pissed off. I literally try to plan to leave the county when one of these clusterfucks is scheduled.

    From your link:

While no language in Ballot Measure 2A indicates the creation of a parking structure, Breckenridge Ski Resort said this expectation was created through statements made by council last year.
    Suckers.

Fees should be redirected toward moar steep terrain.

Neither did we. I think we were just subject to the fallout from those Midwestern mothers and "locals", the latter of which really seemed like snotty rich kids.

Maybe things have changed in terms of these "explosions" of development with regard to the typical tourist being more upscale?

Kind of reads like it's the locals who fucked that one up. The trolley might have been a good idea IF they had made trolley served parking where the trolley happened to go through town.

    Jacket rentals.

If ever there was a sign of too many tourists somewhere.... it's jacket rentals.

The trolley is a short term solution from what I understand. I still think they'll build a parking deck, but it should be further north of town and serviced by a gondola into town.

That triathlon was the biggest bullshit clusterfuck I've seen in 20 years here. The Pro Cycling Challenge was ok, at least it was pros doing a pro thing and the road was only shut down for a little while. Shutting down the whole highway for an entire day just so some amateur cross fitters can ride bikes back and forth to Zuma is so fucking stupid.

I think that most of the tourist boom in Summit is just from the population boom on the front range. We call them "Frangers" and once they come all the time and get familiar they are "Frocals". Usually good folks, probably dealing with the same housing issues and exorbitant healthcare down in Denver too. Growing pains for sure.

Drive to a parking garage so you can take a gondola to another gondola to get to the base area... sweet. How is that different from the current parking on airport road and taking a bus to the gondola to the base area?

yeah, we really do have a strange dynamic here. Not quite local, but not quite tourist either. As one of them, I sorta feel like a local, but I also know that I'm most definitely not a local. But I'm also most definitely not a "tourist".
