There's a whole lot of keeping up with the Jones's in there Benny. Most mtn folks don't give a shit about that game.

Possibly the douchiest thing ever written on TGR, and presumptuous as hell. What's the most money you ever made in a year Benny? And don't lie too much, otherwise you'd have your own place in Summit county instead of visiting each year.

Nope, seriously. Just a decent roof over head and a decent life. And not living in a trailer. No fucking trailers. Never have, never will. That's my line.

A new car because you might die if it breaks down is pretty much the definition of keeping up with the Jones's.

I got no inheartance either bunny

you couldn't do it cause your a pussy and have no balls

I moved to the mountains at age 21 and never looked back, camped out, squatted in cabins, got hundred day seasons in year after year, lifes not much different, I just don't spend much money like they do in suburbia city living

it's a lifestyle that you take on, living in a mountain town, dealing with tourists, looking for deals, you name it, a guy like me never pays retail

I made less than 40k last year after taxes, I do all kinds of fun shit, take vacations, you name it, looking at buying a 4 thousand dollar mountain bike in the next couple weeks, I'm never broke never waiting for the next paycheck

mountain towns are all about the hook up, the deal, not spending money on dumb shit, not wasting money, sure I'm the guy at the bar getting free food, free drinks, free eveything or half price while dumb fucks like you pay double. Happy hour? who needs that I pay a dollar a beer all the time, a buddy of mine is a chef and they closed the resturant for a wedding, and sure enough there was alot of left over uncooked food, loaded my cooler up bro and boy was that stuff top notch, a friend cleans houses and gives me endless left overs

my cost of living is so low it's not even funny, but thats a choice, how I live isn't as posh as your westchester posh down state sububan living, but it works for me

Read more like petty self justification for his bitter old fuckeryness to me... He never had the balls to do anything other than go on a vacation or two and stuff his pockets with breakfast buffet... or worry about the existence of a metric GPS system.

Benny, your numbers are unrealistic. Correct me if I'm wrong but the question is, "how do you afford to be somewhat comfortable financially in the mountains" not "how can Benny afford his dream of lots of culture, no crowds and not going to the laundry mat"

Here is a 5 y.o 1/2 duplex with a garage 10 minutes from the town of Winter Park for $350K. http://mojorealestate.vflyer.com/hom...home/315375002
Explain to me how that is unobtainable by any metric. Just admit that you are not willing to make the sacrifices to make it happen. The viability has nothing to do with trust funds or eating frozen pizzas 365.

Your numbers are off Bunny. Locals wait and buy when the market is right. Dont have cable, that is for people who dont have anything better to do like east coasters. We are all spancered so gear isnt an issue. Job buys our ski passes. My truck is old enough to drink and drives great in the snow. Our house was built in Y2k and is nicer than yours for less money. Oh, we drink for free too.

It was, for sure. And there was no economy at all back then, so it may have actually been less affordable. But speaking to Summit's point, there are people who made it work and aren't exactly going to be living under a bridge when they're old.

Well as you toot about all the time about not owning fancy overpriced cars, wasting money etc...guess what other people might also have figured out that novel fucking idea.

I recognize that I could have a much nicer home elsewhere but that's not what's driving the decision for me.

Yeah, the drinking for free part is why owning a restaraunts or bar is a bad idea.

These two projects are generally opposed by full time residents of Winter Park. There is a perfectly viable Safeway three miles down the road. By admission, it's primary purpose is to be a catalyst for development which places an increasing burden on publicly funded infrastructure. I'd love to see some type of analysis on the net tax benefit.

Back to transportation. What is a good example of a mountain community that has a viable public transportation system? Not just a mechanism to get wallets to ticket windows but one that allows a resident to get to and from work reasonably efficiently. Steamboat and the RFV seems pretty good put I'd like the opinion of someone that actually lives there.

Benny, have you admitted that you have no idea about what you are talking about or are you still waiting for Meadow Skipper's audited financials.
I don't use ours as much as I used to since we live up in SMV and have two little kiddos but I think RFTA does a pretty great job, Its designed primarily for residents and workers coming into the valley, which is why they have routes out to Silt and Rifle, not many tourists coming from there. I'm sure some regular users have their complaints but I don't usually hear too many. Hell we have wifi on a bunch of the buses now, and plenty with bike racks, etc. If it was just the wife and I again we would use it for work and going out a lot more than we do.

Ok, then there's the skis and clothes and tickets and all the others shit you need to ski, because, hell, that's why you're there, right? That shit isn't cheap. Then there's the usual stuff. Like, food. Maybe cable. Gotta have cable. You won't be out partying every night. Gotta pay the mortgage, right? Shots are expensive.

So, you tell me. Does 60 grand cover that? 100 grand? Remember the IRS, dudes, they're first in line.

    Of course it doesn't.

Because, if you survive and pay off the house, you won't have Jack when you're old, except for a crappy old house, like the rest of America right now. So, you wanna be 65, poor, still working, in a place made for young people and tourists? No.
93 chevy bunny, just put a new radiator in it this summer, kept over heating

when you come out to visit I might let you use my granite and marble shower grohe shower handle massaging shower head, it's pretty basic in my opinion, but bad ass compared to your fiberglass piece of shit shower you have back at home, makes me feel like a million bucks every nite I use it

Hmmm, that's nice, I guess, but, I don't want to live there. I certainly don't want to live in SLC, which can be affordable. I really don't want to live in most mountain towns, permanently. The culture is insipid. Deadening. The people are vacuous. Don't get me wrong, they're nice, and we have common interests, but, there's nothing there. Nope, I'll just rent for two to four months out there, during ski season. That's all I need. I've had a taste of disability lately, and there's no place worse to be laid up than the mountains. No thanks. But even if I found perpetual youth, I'd scream if I had to live around ski culture more than that. Dude.

Quick switch from it being financial suicide and cat food retirement to new excuse that he doesn't really like it there anyway.

There are vacuous people in mountain towns just like there are in NYC or anywhere else. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fucking moron.

whats with the big words, don't really have the disere to look them up

while you hide from you neighbors in that east coast sprawl and put on a bullshit happy face, my neighbors actually give a shit, they bring you ice, food, check on you, and make sure your doing ok, help out as much as they can when your laid up because of injury, had a friend move in with a neighbor when his leg was shattered, spent two weeks being taken care of, you can't buy shit like that, something people do for eachother in mtn towns

Not really man. I got mine. Pension, tons of savings. I can pick and choose now. If I struggled in the mountains all that time, I'd be, well, struggling. But, I'd be living the dream!
I have great dental insurance too. How's yours? You probably need to look into that.

Right next to the Olive Garden, across from Outback Steakhouse. There are many fine dining establishments in the Vail Valley.

You know, I used to think you were just sort of a clueless person.

But this post shows you're really a complete fuck wit. You don't know mountain cultures or mountain people because you've only been a tourist. You've never gotten to know people. I can say that with confidence because you display the exact sorts of traits and thinking that people in tourist-havens hate.

TGR really needs an "don't show posts by XXXXX" button because you're parochialism is absolutely moronic. I'm gonna go for a bike ride in the fall mountains now. Have fun watching cable in suburbia.

I hear that a lot. I'm cashing in my home when I retire. So, what then? Under the bridge? A trailer in Florida? I mean, cashing in on a home in a place where you want to live is, well, bizarre.
