Cool looking cars... neat seeing the guy work.

What 930 do you have? Is it your personal car?

    It's mine.

87 Turbo with 33k miles. I got it on trade 2-3 years ago. Pretty sure I have posted this picture of it.

I don't think I'd seen that pic before... Nice car! The '87 is pre-G50, right?

    Any other pics?

I started talking to a dealer around here about their Golf R. Looks like there are only a couple within a couple hundred miles. Going to line up a test drive.

Also debating whether I'm letting myself be too influenced by the warranty... Even if the Golf R ends up being great - and I'm sure it's a very nice little car - it's still just a little new and generic. Still struggling to give up the 964 idea - even though I know the prices are insane right now and it'll end up being a money pit where I live. $50k for a 100k mile car is asking for a disaster. Still not going away though...

What do you figure your '87 is worth right now? ~$175-200?

I've got a few more, Ill upload. It stays in a garage, down in FL.

I doubt I would get that much out of it. I took it in for 70ish I think.

I spent a lot of money, making it perfect.

    FWIW - here's an '87 4-speed with 35k miles asking $135...

Did you swap in the G50 yourself?

The car came to me with the G50 done, and a ton of Fabspeed stuff on it. I took off all the Fabspeed stuff, and left the trans. Correct trans is what's on that car above.

Car needs to sit another 10-15 years.

I have Fabspeed plumbing on my car and its tits. Are/were you looking for OEM?

Yep. It came with all the OEM stuff, so I put it back on, and sold the Fabspeed stuff.

I'm hoping someone will pay 500k for it in 10-15 years.

    Do you even intercooler bro?

A couple years ago, before I put it on a truck to FL. It's been under a cover, ever since. Kind of a shame, but I can't afford to wreck it.

As if anyone ever wrecked a 930...

    lol.

So, on a far less expensive note, I think I've managed to convince myself about the Golf R. I know I don't really want the Subaru (although a '15 STi Launch Edition might be next in line), the Focus market is insane ($70k at the dealer...), and I'm not going to skip buying a 964 for $50k just so I can get into the same kind of maintenance issues and expense on a $35k Audi, BMW, or Mercedes with 40k miles on the clock.

Unfortunately, I'm taking it on faith that the new R is actually faster and better balanced, with better AWD, than the last one. The last one was a nice car, but pretty uninspiring. I'm arranging a deal for one of two '16s that are about 500 miles from here for about $35k. It'll all be over except the signing before I get to drive it, so I'm hopeful, but a bit concerned. But with the Golf R market so strong right now (the local dealer already has deposits on his allotment of '17s), I figure, worst case, I'll buy it, drive it back here, and if I don't like it, I'll mark it up and sell it. And if its good I'll drive the factory warranty off of it and sell it in a couple years. It'll be a fun weekend regardless, and who knows what happens to the 964 market in the meantime. Maybe those go back to being $30k cars at some point. If it comes together, I could be headed to either AZ or KS on Thursday PM. We'll see.

Was gonna start my own thread, but this looks like the place to ask. I've done no research. So, I like to ride my motorcycle a lot, and I work 2 miles from work. I basically want the nicest car I can get for not very much money. Example, I bought a Navigator with 220k miles on it about 6 months ago. I'm not in love with it and now I'm thinking about picking this up, but I don't want to fuck myself with repairs and such, but my dad owned 2 Porsches and they were bullet proof. So, thoughts on this boxster? He says 7500 is the lowest he'll go.

Maybe it's been covered already in here and I just need to look back.

Disclaimer: I'd buy that Boxster as a fun car all day long.

Contingency: With 150k on the clock the engine is on borrowed time. On the other hand, $8k is cheap as hell for a Boxster and as long as the engine runs you're ahead of the game.

Below is a reasonable example of what you're looking at if and when judgement day comes for the M96 engine. If you can handle that in stride over a 5 year ownership period then go for it. $15k sales price if you assume the engine will blow and you'll have to source and install a low mile engine from a reputable seller. All said $7,500 is crazy cheap for driving a car as balanced and enjoyable as a Boxster. Just remember, you're paying $8k because the engine has already outlived its life expectancy. If you can acknowledge that risk in stride more power to you. Good luck whatever you decide.

Jeezum, Porsche can't make an engine that lasts 150K today?

The 9A1 is a damn good engine (09+ Carrera, others). The Mezger dry sump (996 GT3, 996TT) is a damn good engine. Those will go 200k+ regularly. The M96/97 is a known weak point in the engine history of Porsche, but it helped them stay in business. Ymmv.

    Looks like it's been sold...

Regardless - I really don't like the 996, and would be concerned about driving it up here if it were an investment. I'm sure it's a fun car though. Seems like there are a bunch available... I'll think about it.

If I didn't have the AWD requirement, I'd be driving a Cayman already. I'd think that platform is probably the best bang for a sports car buck today.

That being said, buying an $8k Porsche will either be the best or worst way someone's ever spent $8k.

Which p-car year/models have you driven stfu? I wanted a 964 (81 Targa) but appreciation killed that idea.

    '81 Targa would have been a 3.2. The 964 is 89-93.

I've driven a 993 C2 (briefly owned one), a 964 C2 and C4, a 3.2 ('84 or so?), a 968, a 944 Turbo, a 928 (auto) and a 914. Have never driven a water cooled 911 - I'm sure they're nice. But I really dislike the way the 996 looks, and while I would consider a 997, they're more money than I want to spend. My 964 C4 plan was hatched when they were $25k cars. Figured I'd buy one, and have an easy $20-30K laying around for maintenance. Buying an out of warranty Porsche for my whole sports car bankroll seems like a pretty dumb idea - and there's no doubt I'll break it up here. I can just see the look on my wife's face after I write the check for $55K and show up the next month with a $7500 repair bill. I like Porsches, but I like getting laid too.

I'm warming to this design... But $65K is a deal breaker on a 2011 car.

Something like this might be interesting - with the CarMax warranty...

Thanks for the info. Anyone else pick up on the description that says 'new factory clutch' which might suggest he had an IMS failure, fixed it, and he's just not willing to find out how long until the next one?

This was a pretty good read on the issues you guys were mentioning.

IMS failure results in a new engine for around 20k.

Get a PPI for 60-100 bucks at a local Porsche dealer.
