Start today and you might be able to get something put together for 2015-16.

I'm under the impression that the majority of Tahoe resorts don't give a rats hind end about the local community which explains the dearth of events like this. They don't offer mid-week race series for adults or kids or even a mellow night skiing session, or a casual AT "race" schedule. Their primary customer isn't the guy/girl or his family who live within 20 minutes of the resort. This was the vibe I always felt on the south shore, (less so at Sierra). Some of the smaller places on the north side might be a little friendlier. A midweek, evening, local "beer league" with AT, gates, whatever would be cool.

Why would you people want to ruin a fun activity by throwing on some spandex and barely functioning gear to go skin laps at a ski area? That's pretty much the opposite of what backcountry skiing is all about. If you want to climb a mountain with your buddies and drink some beers, then go climb a mountain with your buddies and drink some beers. If you want to see how core you are, maybe just put the word out and have a go at Mt. Tom or something?

To be honest lepistoir, I don't think I have the desire to put in all the effort to spearhead starting a series. I'd happily volunteer to put up flags, work sign in booth, etc though. I think your idea of a meetup one midweek evening, skin up a set route, turn around is good.

Roundtop shoulder was way better than I would've thought today. Felt like winter out there finally.

No one said anything about spandex and we're not talking about the Patrouille des Glaciers. If you already like earning your turns on the weekends then come get in a mid week work out, meet others interested in skinning and then go climb a mountain and drink beers on the weekend. Not for glory; I think having people compete against themselves for most improvement is a more productive motivator. That said, your sentiment is well understood by anyone who sees the popularity of skinning in Europe and antipathy to organized forms here in the states. If you want to keep dissing uphill exercise to show how core YOU are, well, you're missing out.

found some good snow out there today near Mt Rose Meadows at the secret stash. A little low, but totally manageable. This next storm ought to make it great! Just find the smooth patches of ground

Clearly it makes tons of sense that the mountain with snow to the base is closed, while the mountain where you have to ride a funitel to the snow is open. Clearly.

I suppose you could nordic ski on the grass next to the base of the funi.

So, did you scope out anything on 88? This morning's view of the cams makes me suspect that KW is under reporting a bit, probably to keep their FB page from exploding with demands to open their one run, but people who have Tahoe passes and could easily ride where they have been able to make snow. Montes looks ready, which leads me to suspect that J/S Bowl is ready.

    Someone forgot their decimal point.

At 8,500 feet, Carson Pass received 45 inches of snow in the past 72 hours.

Went up to sugarbowl today and was told we are not allowed to hike right now, that they are trying to "conserve their snow so they can open soon."
Naturally we said ok and went up anyways. I think the real reason they didnt want anyone up there is because it rained to the top last night and they dont want anyone to know! Runnels down most everything.
On the bright side, the small base of a ft to 2 is Solid. Skied 2 laps off Disney and I didnt touch a rock. Think going really high is gonna be good after the next storm, higher than tahoe has to offer that is. Anyone been down to Sonora recently?

Not surprising. I received the following email from them on October 30:
    Dear Uphill Skier,

While we’re thrilled to see the incoming storm on the radar, with our numerous early-season /on-mountain operations & projects still very much underway on Sugar Bowl’s slopes, uphill travel and pre-season skiing at Sugar Bowl is not allowed at this time, until further notice.

Stay tuned for info & details on this season’s program, and let it snow!

    See you soon,

    Sugar Bowl Resort
We'll see how it plays out in the long run.

Rose area today. Found around 12-18" in most areas. Did some digging and there are very weak facets at the base. Very easy failures in several tests including ECT so concerned we will have a dangerous deep slab after this storm and it will persist for a while.

Anyone know what the deal is with touring @ KW before they open? I can't remember if they are on private land or NFS.

@claymond - how was the route out to roundtop ? Jealous that you are already getting at it.

New skins just arrived ... off to the cutting room.

The trail had at least a couple inches on it the whole way, so it was fine. Above the lake, pack got deeper and a burly ice layer or two kept you off the rocks

    Thanks @powdork @claymond.

@powdork - you gotta love how the policy just re-iterates multiple times in different ways that you can't go uphill in or out of season, open or closed @ KW. It should just read - you can never go uphill unless on a chairlift.
