So what if you access the ridge line from say out of bounds FS land and drop into inbounds terrain?

    Also illegal, AFAIK.

I find the different/conflicting policies between KW and Heavenly interesting. Owned by the same company, and that company changed KW's former policy to be less like Heavenly's after they bought KW.

Granted, I think both are too restrictive.

I thought this was always their "official" policy, but their "practical" policy was basically go for it, but stay out of the way and don't do stupid shit.

I've never seen a no trespassing sign before, though.

Pretty sure that is the policy. And, -don't be stupid. Don't get hurt.

It is odd the KW was changed after Vail aquired, but made it more restrictive than their other properties. Maybe the VLords are a bit afraid of rare earth after try bought the place, laid off a bunch of patrol then had two slides within weeks. And has anyone noticed it has rarely snows at KW since Vail came in. Hell looks at these storms. Going north. Going south. Does Ullr want V out?

Just speculating. Or maybe Ullr just wants to see some lift improvements.

Hmm, I headed out to Round Top again today, had checked to see if the advisory had been updated, but didn't look at incidents page. Vis was poor I couldn't see the slide. But, an ECT in a somewhat windloaded area kept me to low angle meadow skipping anyway.

Saw that on the forecasts. SAC weather notes from today mention it too:
More detailed information about the weather:
Very interesting snow level variability today due to cold pools of air holding snow levels lower than forecast in specific areas. Descending Mt. Rose Hwy at 2pm, snow level was at 7,600' on the Tahoe side. Ascending Brockway Summit (Hwy 267) at 2:15pm, snow level was at 7,200' on the Tahoe side with snow all the way down into Martis Valley/Truckee (5,900') on the north side.

Interesting observations. I was in the same area and was seeing similarly. Although we did not dig a pit, I noticed that there was some cracking and other signs of instability, mostly related to the base layer itself. I was thinking I would avoid anything too steep until the snowpack (hopefully) purges itself. That layer may be specifically related to higher regions though

Good eye, noticing the cracks. They were not very big (up to a ski length?) and not very often. There was also the feeling of snow collapsing underfoot, which might have included localized whoompfing. That layer is in higher, n-facing terrain above 8000' where old snow has sat around since the first couple of deposits earlier this season. It usually doesn't "purge" but persists after every release with a new slab layer building up on it each cycle. The best one can hope for is that it isn't overloaded but builds up enough depth to reduce the temperature gradient enough to institute a sintering regime. That, plus time is the way that layer will stabilize, unless we get heavy rains to the top of everything, but that would be a rare December event, right Splat?

10" of shmoo at Squaw this morning. Snow level at or just above good coast this morning, but must have been lower overnight. Mountain run looks good down to headwall but still some grass showing below that point.
