The ski area formerly known as Squaw has a pretty sweet new live HD pano: http://squawalpine.roundshot.ch/squaw I guess that's our trade-off for delaying Alpine's opening until....

^^^ That's pretty sweet. I was just about to saw that Upper Mountain coverage looks surprisingly solid from the standard cams, but that gives an even better idea.

Edit: You can click the cam link in the Squaw pano to Alpine's. High-T looks good to go right now.

Kirkwood tomorrow morning! Time for a 1 day mission from SF. If you see a guy with orange pants, a black jacket and old iggy FFFs, say hi.
Three fundamentals of every extreme skier, total disregard for personal saftey, amphetamines, and lots and lots of malt liquor......-jack handy

^^the no beginner thing was strange...although last year had to be a record number of visitors taking the lift back down on 6 & 10. Was all set to take one of the littles to N*...looks like a shorter drive to the wood instead.

Have you ever been to KW??? It is all freaking gnar! No beginners everz. Honestly, there is enough challenge off 5 in low tide to freak out a never ever. Especially when you are getting flybys on the last 300' were it was mostly rain the past few days.

Conditions are perfect on snow. Conditions at home have me up next Saturday with just me and my son. Might be able to take a lap or two solo. Maybe a few hours, but only if KW lifts its ban on beginners and open lessons. I mean, he is allowed, as he has two seasons under his belt. No beginner.

I just figured out what Fair Wages needs to do. Get a day care certification. And have an on hill day care. Not really lessons, then. Vail will love it.

Yeah, so as long as the pass is not closed next Friday afternoon, we will be sledding by 4PM.

Hopefully having a few days to play around for real around the 20th-23rd. Conditions permitting.

Curious to see if SB even opens - based on the cams Nob Hill and Christmas tree don't appear skiable, and while upper Lincoln is probably OK I doubt that lower Lincoln is.

^^^ Made my weekend plans on those views.

Though the latest SAC observations from areas other than Tamarack have me intrigued.

Brooks, that looks like a cool dog.

That's what I'm hoping for tomorrow... same for Emigrant... and hoping it doesn't rain up top tonight and ruin all the snow they've been saving. I already put a core shot or two in my skis at Mammoth this morning (no regrets whatsoever after the last few years) so I might as well get my money's worth before I get them fixed up. Anyone else going to be at Squaw? White helmet / grey-ish Flylow jacket / blue pants.

Stopped by the Polaris resort today, ahead of the weekend crowds, and enjoyed a solidly good first day. Steady flow of peeps, 3 lifts running upper mountain, quite a bit of open terrain. Pretty fun, softish cornlike snow on Pluto along with unfrozen cement in the trees (I'm counting it as pow). Pinball terrain park was all corn, very nice. A few spots down low wearing thin at end of day, easily avoided with no damage. Racked up 13 epic pins, including Brown Bragging.

A few bands of heavy rain in Sac. Will not be at KW tomorrow, have fun!

Wait, what? Not gonna be at KW? Are you fuggin kidding me? They gonna get 5 spinning dude with access to 4 runs. You are totally missing out. Why ski above the snow line dude? I mean their FB page is exploding with stoke. The meter is broke.

Ah, I'm just pissed they are now charging nearly $160 for a kids ski lesson this year. Goddamn thieves. Anyone know of a babysitter who would like to hang with my kid on hill this winter? Not looking for a lesson, but someone responsible, fun and who willing to give a pointer now an again.

What's the point of teaching poor people's kids to ski? They aren't going to grow up and buy McMansions on the hill.

    14/?? The OFFICIAL Tahoe Thread

Curious how much is a season long program for the wee lad? At $1000 it was worth it for us. Owen got a lesson any day if the week. He learned a lot more from his coach than we could have taught him at 4. Kristen and I got to ski together a lot. I was able to bring him to work with me. Pretty much same deal on race team except for we get to travel to races 1-2x a month. I really think a kids' program then a race or freeride program is the way to go. $$ well spent. Check it out.

Squaw was full on GNAR today... as in, make it back down the cat track through the mashed potatoes without blowing out your knee. You can tell it rained a ton up there last night. There were some good pockets of snow but you couldn't really trust it.

KW does not offer any year long programs. JETS is about 10 weeks, and requires one to be 6 years old. They do not offer any multi day packs (like they used to) for the little kids. I was told over the phone that Vail just can't afford to, that they are basically losing money on the classes already. Funny, how a small little hill like Dodge Ridge can figure out how to make it happen, but a big corp like Vail does not seem to be able to. Or maybe want to.

We would be happy to pay a grand for a program like Dodge Ridge has. The mrs. and I were talking last night about how we should be taking a look at DR or BV, for next season instead of KW. We love the hill, but Vail just does seem to care about their old loyal customers as much as trying to attract their richer customers. Prior to the acquisition, you could get a ten pack of lessons for $755, now that would cost you $1580 for the same service. Totally different price point.

Seriously, KW, please figure this out. The only discount they offer is like $11 off if you do two days in a row (but then they don't include lunch anymore). Hell, I'd be happy with a 10 pack for a grand. But yeah, maybe next season we will be seeing more of you Mike. That program sounds sweet.

I fully expected 6 to pop. I'm also just happy I can ski. Can't sit to drive, or I'd show up for a few race course laps.

I might ski with the kid for a few hours, if he's cool

Oh, he's cool. I'm actually stoked to ski with him a bunch this year. Planning a bunch of boys trips. But he needs coaching for sure.

What's your ailment? I've had a pinched nerve since May. Barely could walk in July. Driving sucked. Yoga and foam rollers saved me. But I've got to stay on top of it.
