Yeah it would be amazing to get the mountains to fully open up and get some base.

What happens in the sidecountry around here will be interesting. There's already been some major traffic in our sugary rotten boneyards...and some sizable rips in all the usual places.

Let us know what you find. As Puffin alluded to, I've heard multiple reports of pretty sketchy conditions in EV.

The backcountry conditions around here have been as follows:

You ski a line... the snow directly behind you starts collapsing... slowly it builds... and eventually it gains momentum and goes a distance beyond where you pull out, ripping to the ground. If you fall in your line, you're kinda screwed, but if you pull off to the side, the slide passes by about 10 seconds later.

Monday should be fun. Not the most amazing day ever, but fun and very necessary. Next weekend into next week could be what we've been waiting for, BUT - that's 7 days out and lots could change. I'm just excited that there's even a possibility for a few good storms!

    Forecasts for Monday updated:

REALLY warm up here today, it's a deck day. Jet doesn't seem to converge on Monday like it looked like it would to start....so we'll see what it can do, another 4-6" would be sweet. Next weekend I think snow levels could be an issue.....really warm. Super nice day today however, hope everybody is outside somewhere.

Pretty good MS. I probably only have 15 days this season, so I wish I was stronger at this point but it feels pretty good. Been sending the Lodgepole gap and hitting some jumps in the park to get the feel back for landing on it and no problems thus far. I plan on skiing East Vail in the next few days. Probs just an exploratory low key lap, but I'm looking forward to it.

While sliding on snow I'd be lying if I said I was thinking about it.

    17 was fun today....

Crested Butte to Aspen should do best starting tonight I think. Not sure how we'll do in EC but I'd expcect some good snow when the cold front passes. NWS makes it sound like a few snowy days in a row starting Wed thru Sat. We haven't had 2 good systems within 7 days of each other all year really so that will be nice. Still a long ways out but snow levels look high for Jan toward the end of next week....

you sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I'd love to meet your father someday.
Do I detect a lot of anger flowing around this place? Kind of like a pubescent volatility, some angst, a lot of I'm-sixteen-and-angry-at-my-father syndrome?

    fuck that noise.

Good snow tomorrow. Irwin/Schofield Pass/Wolf Creek will win with more than a foot, but everyone should do well. The main update is the cold front looks a few hours slower, which means the heavier (or at least moderate) snow could stick around for a few hours after the lifts close on Monday afternoon. This could setup Tuesday AM to be cold but soft and with way less people than MLK Monday.

Moisture returns on Wednesday through the weekend, but the trick is timing each individual storm to wring out the moisture into snow. Friday could be good, as could Sunday, as could another day or two next week. The models are hinting that a ridge reestablishes late Jan, but tomorrow's storm + Fri > Tue could provide a lot of snow. Let's hope so!

    Joel-
We need to be leaving The mountains by about 2 on Monday. What are your thoughts on snowfall to that point? Will it be worthwhile or will we be skiing icy groomers with our only taste of real snow coming during the drive?

@XtrPickels - I don't know what mountain you're talking about, but guessing I-70 somewhere. It will be snowing before 2pm, but the best snow will be after noon and likely after 1-2pm. You'll have some fresh before you leave, but the best stuff will likely fall on the windshield of your car while it's heading east.

later this week is gonna get wet and dangerous. Heavy wet snow up high sitting on all this stuff on the ground should cause a pretty impressive avy cycle. It's gonna be WARM, so snow levels should be about 9k by the weekend. Everyone needs to check their powder frenzy this week and stay safe.

I know the 6-10 day and 8-14 have no human input over the weekend, but they sure look pretty (aside from the high temps).

But really, super wet snow is exactly what we need right now.
