Seriously, WTF Burton? Your riders act like punks in those "poaches"...especially the Deer Valley crew. I mean, wow, you're good enough to block in beginners and to run into their skis. They have such impressive steaze right there. This is the behavior that gets your ass kicked and rightfully so. Between watching this crap and getting knocked over by some fat ass getting off the lift and all the stereotypical bad boarder behavior I saw out there today...

I know not all riders are this bad, but man, the number of asshole gapers there are that do ride, it's giving all of you folks a bad name.

The Taos section cracked me up - "You're going to be banned from here forever".

In all seriousness though, this will probably cause more problems that benefits. I think the bans are ridiculous, but they are what they are. The fact of the matter is that most likely the individuals that are going to attempt this will go about it in the wrong way and they're going to act like total douchebags. See the DV section.

I think it will be funny when some of the old gaurd are going to get all bent out of shape by this. I just don't get why there is such a big deal regarding what is strapped to your feet. Douch bags are douch bags, it doesn't take a board or skis to be one.
The biggest problem with this wine was that it had more wood put to it than Jenna Jameson.

Props to the Poachers, I'm all for punk attitudes.

Yet, I find it ironic that they flash the little $$$ symbols on the deer valley employee inferring the demonic forces of ski resort corporation and their insatiable appetite for money when Burton is the 2000 lb. Gorilla of snow sports. Ask any shop owner/buyer or any prospective shop owner the insane buying minimums that Burton demands which consequently starve the shop's ability to diversify their brand stock and you'll understand the irony here. Burton performs the worst corporate maneuvers in all of winter sports and are pretty much the biggest sell-out in winter sports. i.e. you can buy Burton tee's at WalMart.

    x2

Actually after watching the videos, I can only see this end poorly for the resorts, those doing it AND Burton. But its SOOOOOOO CORE DUUUUUUDE!!!!!!1111

Oh, and he said "niche." Not "nitch." And poaching a green at deer valley is hella gangsta. I do think it is a bit retarded that boarding is prohibited some places, but this type of a campaign is only going to solidify those rules because they're going to end up with a bunch of asshats who fuck with the skiing patronage and piss off top-dollar customers, not exactly the way to win over management. But hey, its totally gnar.
this is true...I agree with the concept, but the Deer Valley video pissed me off. If it was switched and they were skiers cutting off sbers, I'd feel the same way. To be honest, I kind of wanted to see those girls get punched.

Its true. Alta is on federal land (or state maybe), either way you can hike all you want. I think that is the case for all of them except Dear Valley. So they can legally keep you from hiking with a board. Thats what I have heard, I could be way off.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'.

I agree. That video was bullshit. I've been riding sideways since '90, and way back then we'd have to almost act as ambassadors for the sport since we were such a small minority. That mindset still continues for myself and many other riders. What those girls did was shit and is a setback for the relations between skiers/snowboarders. And fuck Burton for putting it on their site. Fucking with a few gapers on a green run does nothing to the resort not allowing snowboarding. It just makes us other riders look bad. And again, fuck Burton for allowing that.

I believe the frontside of Taos i.e. Al's Run that they were 'poaching' is not state land but the backside under Kachina peak is. I have a good friend with connections there and he explained their policy to me. He told me they wouldn't change in the near future as there is no need $$ wise and many families, mistakenly or not, enjoy the no snowboard rule.

one of the unmentionable here ski magazines had an article about taos few months back. according to them skier visits have halved since the early nineties (down to 150000 from 300000). to be frank, they didn't blame snowboarding, but the constant popping up of new "destination resorts".

i wonder how long it would take (if ever) for them to convert if this trend continues...

I still hold that if a resort opened up as snowboard-only, I would poach on skis on the first day just out of principle.

But this 'campaign' is not really the best way to go about civil disobedience, IMO.

    Word.

But it's also the reason burton is the ONLY company that can do this. No ski resort on that list could be any match for the clout burton holds in whatever courtroom scenario they could concoct. And they in turn get a notch in their belt for 'stayin core to the core core of their coreness'.

Looked like some of the 'beginners' in the deer valley clip were dressed for success.....meaning I think they were friends on skis.

    Either way.

    Funny shit.

That ad was the first thing I saw when I opened my new TWS this afternoon, then this thread. How funny. Burton - Way to go, dorks. Way to make snowboarders look like an even bigger bunch of retards than they already are.

^ (This is coming from someone who actually has more days knuckledragging than skiing this year, BTW.)

These guys will never learn, these resorts don't disallow snowboarding because they're antiquated and draconian. They disallow it because it's not part of their business model, plain and simple. Same reason you can't ride a skateboard at a roller skating rink, or ride a motorcycle on a BMX track. It has nothing to do with "keeping the snowboarders down, " it just doesn't fit the plan. And you take the good with the bad. Do you think these resorts would mind having the added side-slipper revenue especially during the slow years? Hell no, but that's all figured into the cost of offering the product they're marketing - which just so happens to be skiing. Simple.

I'd love to see Burton get sued over this one, but it'll never happen.

    donkey punched?

I have no qualms against snowboarders, my main touring partner is a boarder, but I agree with Jer (wha?) that SBing seems far more corporate than skiing at times...

Who says snowboarders have a bad name?

This is a fantastic marketing by a company that wants to sell more snowboards/bindings/softgoods, nothing more. Just like everything else, Burton's category continues to get more competitive, and this is a great way to show that they are just as core as their competitors like Lib, Ride, Forum, etc.

Jake Burton has been around long enough to know better--if he wants to put snowboards on Deer Valley, he would to have to buy it.

Burton bought out Forum a couple of years ago, I don't believe that it is getting any more competitive for them in the board market. Burton own half the major brands and Quiksilver most of the rest the only people who are finding it more difficult are the small independent manufacturers.

It's funny, we were talking today (at Brighton) about how snowboarders could probably take that resort over and make it snowboarding only. The biggest hurdle is a patrol. Snowboarders are more than welcome to join the patrol, but from my experience, they don't have a whole lot of interest. It might just be part of the "I don't give a fuck" attitude...but again, just shooting themselves in the foot. Honestly, I'd bet Brighton would welcome discussions along those lines.

Too bad really, because what better protest than having the snowboarding only resort only one ridgeline over from Alta.
