Holy crap! Can that be legal? How can they detain someone, or take their gear (or take anything)? They're not police.

The funny thing is, back in the late 80's, when snowboarding just came about, MRG was actually one of the few resorts to ALLOW snowboarders. Unfortunately the swing that they created while getting off the single chair would send the lift out of line and trigger the shutoff. So, Betsy (who owned MRG before the CO-OP) decided to only let them on the doubles.

In the supermarket one day, two young snowboarders saw her and decided to tell her that she was a stupid bitch and took away all the good terrain for the snowboarders. She decided that she wasn't going to deal with that and decided to keep snowboards off the mountain for good. The co-op decided to keep it a skier-only mountain.

Alta let boards on one year

interesting!! on a related note i think it was 88 or 89 that alta actually let snowboarders ride the mountain. it was cool at the time but anyone who skis there regularly or hits it pre and post season on their snowboard knows that their is an aweful lot of traversing. really shitty on a board.

as far as Jake Burton trying to relive the glory of past anomosity between boarders and skiers the DUDE DOES NOT abide!

one more thing! hitting the Patsy Marley and then rolling out on the alta service road is not Poaching. ive done it more than a few times and the only response i've ever heard was "how was the ride?"?

That's something I don't understand about snowboarders wanting to hit alta - do they really want to traverse that much? Think of Honeycomb canyon - the snowboarders usually drop out 1/10 of the way out that traverse. 75% of the fun lines at Alta take a traverse as bad or worse than Honeycomb. A few boarders can handle it, but it really is a very small minority. And I'm not insulting the skills of snowboarders saying "they can't handle it". It's just very difficult to traverse on a snowboard. They're impractical and that's why people skied for a couple of hundred years before someone thought to snowboard.

And on the selfish side, I don't really want snowboarders on those traverses. You have to have people keep moving at similar speeds for the traverses to work. It can be annoying to be traversing, trying to maintain momentum for the next uphill stretch, and have to stop or run off the side of the traverse to avoid some guy who is postholing the traverse (which also kind of sucks). That's happened to me in Honeycomb a few times when I come across the random boarder who tries to go more than 50 yards out. I really don't care about boarders one way or the other besides that. I've had lots of friends who are boarders over the years. I wish they'd learn to ski so they could come to Alta with me.

I've seen a boarder come down the mountain at Alta and really never thought anything of it. What I like about this Burton thing is that they have in their minds "Ooooh this will really piss of those ski nazis. We'll show them and their establishment." Then they do it with visions of rich white men with perfect hair getting all red in the face because of those crazy kids. I think that, in fact, if the boarders are not acting like dicks, most of the skiers just think "huh, that's funny" and go on their way. Keep fighting the power Burton.

some taosenito patroller named Day or something like that freaked hard on me and some friends last year... after they told us the hill was fully open...

Skieurmalade (at a normal volume): "I thought that was a caution rope. It was a different color, like at snowbird, where we're from."

Day (hysterically loud): "if you dont shut up right now I'll ban you from this mountain!!! ARGHHHHH!!!!!! I'm insecure and miserable in this low snow year!!!!! ARGHHHH!!!!" etc. etc...

and we never even got that far again in presenting our very valid case before finding ourselves in the parking lot leaving the resort at 11 AM. TAOS' PATROL NEEDS TO GET THE STICK OUT OF THEIR ASS BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE THERE IS COOL AND THEY FUCK UP THE GOOD VIBES.

godspeed to any snowboarder who stirs the pot (and hopefully gets the stems out)

    Wow. I agree with jer.
Fueling MegaCorp viral marketing campaign for free = way to stick it to the man. So core, so punk.
    Retards.

(and retards resorts that do not allow snowbaorders. Coming from someone who has to deal with out of control british boarders all the time...)

Cutting off beginners in an effort to aid Wal mart is in no way punk. I don't blame boarders for wanting to hit those mountains, but if you are going to poach, don't endanger others. Burton is about as punk as McDonald's.

When i first learned that there are resorts in the US that doesnt allow snowboards my first thought was that that gotta be the freedom american troops defend when they are overseas. Funny thing I havent heard of any slopes in Iran that doesnt allow snowboarders...

A couple of years ago at the MRG telefest the tower line under the single had a sweet track in a deep layer of fresh snow obviously made by a snowboard. Word had it that a woman had hiked up very early that morning and laid down the tracks. It was actually really cool. The mystique was part of the whole thing and increased how cool it was. Not in your face - Not some teenage jakeass worshipping a-holes cutting off paying first time skiers on some groomed green.

I read that Taos was considering opening a terrain park just down the valley/near the base to make some $$$. Dunno if that's still on the books or not.
