Oh right on, good call.
ahh, yeah I think that's this one:

yep, that's the one, thanks. I would by far rather have one of those than a "Smartcar"
So what is the difference between my 05 TDI Jetta Wagon and the "clean" diesel? I have a low car IQ...
I'm getting a Chevy VOLT!!!

While your 05 Jetta gets great mileage and can burn Biodiesel it has considerable particulate and nitrogen-oxide emission. The clean diesel standard reduces those emission measures, and I believe will open up the Cali market for new diesel sales. My understanding is that the technology was jointly developed by Mercedes (Diamler), VW, Audi and Porsche. It's known as Bluetec for most brands besides VW. I'll suspect Roo can give the history on it better than I.
http://www.businessweek.com/@@P5XHVo...8/b3972078.htmBut Daimler's exhaust-treatment technology will go a big step further, cleaning up to 80% of the remaining nitrogen-oxide emissions.
how about when manufacturer XYZ does puts the money towards bringing a diesel to the US you all shut the fuck up and buy one? No snivvling about manuals or All wheel drives.
or shut up and go about your business with your piece of shit subaru that won't pass emissions.

That thing is really popular here. Easy on gas, 0-60 in 6.6 sec, handles very nicely. There's a limited edition version with 260bhp which would blow the doors off a lot of hatches. Edit: quick search = turns out the 260hp one is the JAS model, can be bought but not easily, the rumour is that it's possible that it could be released as the type r-r in the future?
We have the 3.7L turbo diesel jeep here as well. Good mileage and actually has the same acceleration figures as the V8. The build quality just doesn't quite match the Toyotas and Nissans. Other nice diesels include the range rover (270hp) and Lexus Q7 (320hp) V8 diesels. Both get around 20mpg pushing heavy cars, in a sub 2 ton car those engines could be a much more efficient and nice option for the V8 loving performance driver.

Yep. Particulates are also known as soot. They create major problems for people with asthma, among other things.
One of the problems with diesel emissions is that they are not nearly as susceptible to being cleaned up by a catalytic converter as spark-ignition emissions. Part of the reason, IIRC, is that diesel burns cooler, and cats work most efficiently at high temps (which is why cats have moved closer to the engine in the past 20 years, and why your vehicle puts out the vast majority of its pollution in the first five minutes after you start it up). It's also a different combination of pollutants.
The advent of low-sulfur diesel fuel doesn't make a huge difference in diesel emissions themselves, but it allows technologies that remove those pollutants to function far more efficiently and longer.
Caveat that all my information is three or four years old, from when I had a diesel emissions control patent case and got to work with some of the top engine researchers in the industry. It was a blast.
Guilty as charged.
not counting days 2016-17
i read that the tiguan TDI bluetec version will be available in the US near the end of 2008.
good news is that the 6 spd manual will be offered w/ the 4 motion (in addition to the auto).
bad news is that the higher clearance / off road setting option will not be avail in US of A. so we'll have to make do w/ the 7.4 inch clearance...which is still better than many so-called SUV's.
proto review here. the proto pics in that review are fugly. the UK site has a photo that looks more like what one would expect:

39 mpg hiway, based on the 6 litre/100km spec listed there.
anyone know if bluetec diesels are biodiesel-mix compatible?
Diesel Particulate emisions can be resolved with a particulate filter that has maybe 2% loss of engine performance.
Tiquan Looks like a Honda CRV
<snip> VW's new 1.4-liter Twincharger four-cylinder-an Eaton supercharger and a Borg-Warner turbocharger combine forces to deliver 168 horsepower, 177 pound-feet of torque, and roughly 30 mpg. <snip> The us version will be 2.0-liter/200-hp/207-lb-ft DOHC 16-valve turbocharged I-4
This thing is gonna be expensive to fix. typical VW gadgets here and there. it's too bad even the imports are getting fancier and bigger. I like the size of my 02 Jetta, hate the new Jettas because of the chrome grill, poor visibility and the corrola tailights.
I wish VW would put out a simple 4motion wagon that is under 30k. I'd rather have a longer Passat wheelbase than a CRV copy anyday. I know you can add 2 inches of clearance with Bilstein HD shocks, which will be the next upgrade to out TDI. I think you can also space out the shocks struts and get more lift.

The tiguan should be pretty cool. I believe it will be an 09 model. All 08 models are now up on http://vw.com.
Glad they've learned since the '85 Benz with the 'trap oxidizer'. Those did a great job of blowing turbos, but MB was damn good about standing behind them.

HD's don't add much more clearance - definitely not 2". I have Bilstein HD's on my 2000 Jetta TDI. Keeps about the same ride height, but much stiffer. Switched to GTI front springs and add a big rear sway bar and my car now handles awesome.
You can get the spacers you talk about for 1-2" of lift from www.metalnerd.com.
I love my TDI and will likely consider buying the new TDI sportwagon when it comes out. It would be sweet if they brought one over with 4-motion, but I'm skeptical it will happen.
To the guy who likes his hybrid over his TDI, I'm curious why? The Prius seems to me to have a bigger environmental footprint - batteries aren't expected to have a very long life (not more than 100k miles or so) and the first few rounds of Prius have had some expensive drivetrain issues for some people. The batteries for those things pose a pretty significant environmental hazard and are going to be an issue to dispose of.
My TDI is incredibly reliable, gets 50 mpg on the highway (which beats most hybrids) and over 40 in the city (which is close to on par with most hybrids).
In the end the environmental cost of replacing a perfectly running gas or diesel car with a brand new hybrid is much higher than environmental advantage of a cleaner burning car. People should keep their cars longer rather than replace them. My TDI has almost 250,000 miles on it and my Jeep has over 100,000 at the moment and I have no plans on replacing either until it they are pretty much dead.

230 mpg? That's what they claim

If I only had the $$ (and brains) to build a prototype. 150-180 mpg = piece of cake.
in the e-mail at the top of this thread there was mention of an "M-Van" model for 2008. My 5 minutes of searching produced nothing, any body got more details on this? Please tell me we're getting a 2008 VW Westy 4 motion.
