Splat <- Telling it like it is.

So there I was in the UNR rec center on the stationary bike when the prez's news conference comes on. Before cutting to the network feed they show some clips of local people giving their opinions. Lo and behold theres Splat saying "Our Presidents an oil man, I don't think he should be talking about energy." They then of course cut to the network feed where he starts talking about oil. Just about fell off the bike. Way to go man.

    FKNA Splat, way to go!!

I saw an article today reporting that Bush was talking about how important it is for us to find alternative energy so America can thrive in the future. If that's the case, I guess we don't need to drill ANWR afterall...thanks GW.

So Bush says the price of gasoline is rising due to the large demand and smaller supply.

Why not make more electric cars which would reduce the consumption of oil, therefor lowering the price for those not weened off fossil fuels?

And on another note, why not send Iraq a bill for freeing their country and pump their oil for us to use?....oh wait, then that solidifies some peoples argument that this was a war for oil.....

In his press conference, the moron stated the same "We need to find alternative energy sources" then proceded to talk about how we also need to open portions of the ANWR to drilling also.

Don't forget the part where he referred to "liquid natural gas" as a "solid". That was precious.

Ummmmmmmmmm, we tried that with Germany at the end of WWI to the tune of 8 million (?) 1917 dollars. That turned out real good.

Point taken, but it has been shown that war repairations (to the defeated nation, or liberated) just do not work.

If only there was some way we could work out a deal where they give us oil in exchange for food.

Especially when you choose to start a war against a nation which has no real threat against your homeland or livelyhood. I think it'd be a little unfair to go invade a country, then charge it a bill for the service.

well if splat got on TV and told us all how we needed to reduce our reliance on fat, stiff skis and instead embrace 152cm carvers, snowlerblades, and snowboards, I would know he was just as full of shit as GWB.

I can't speak for everyone, but I believe when people say this war was for oil they mean "This war was so bush and his oil friends could get into iraq and have a slice of the oil pie and make a shit-ton of money" not "This war was for oil so we could have it cheap as consumers."

Electricity typically comes from coal-burning power plants. That coal is mined by large machines guzzling diesel fuel and kicking coal dust up into the atmosphere. The energy from the coal is converted into electricity and then shipped hundreds of miles through cable wires that lose energy via heat dissipation. By the time the electricity gets to your house and into your car you would have been more environmentally friendly clubbing a baby seal while lighting fire to a tire pile in your backyard (and definitely more entertained).

That's not to justify our current oil-dependent society though. I'm just saying that something else needs to be found whether it be fuel cells, cold fusion, whatever. The really scary part is that changing fuel sources for automobiles is going to be the easy part.... it's the industrial manufacturing process that's really going to be a bitch.

Anyone watch the daily show on this one?

In a similar speech a few days ago he went on and on about our energy problems, and how alternatives are the answer - then he proceded to talk up his $315 million dollar coal research inituative....then he started talking about how new technology also is important and they lost the TV feed

So Bush says the price of gasoline is rising due to the large demand and smaller supply.

Why not make more electric cars which would reduce the consumption of oil, therefor lowering the price for those not weened off fossil fuels?
Until the american fear of nuclear power subsides and/or tidal, solar, and wind advance considerably, we will be getting that electrical energy from natural gas and coal.

Alot of other industrial countries have us beat here. 75% of france and 33% of germany's electrical power come from nuke plants. We have the knowledge to make nuclear power VERY VERY safe.

Hydrogen for fuel cells comes from coal and gas right now. The ideal hydrogen source is through electrolysis (electricity through the water to seperate oxygen from hydrogen), but that means massive ammounts of electrical energy even with the new catalyists- thus nuclear and hydrogen go hand in hand.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but pure sources just don't exist at earth temperatures. Hydrogen is a difficult egg to crack - it diffuses very well due to its small size, so just making a container that doesnt leak is a hurtle. Let alone the fact that its energy density is nothing compaired to things like gas. You have to compress the hydrogen mucho to get the same energy density as current fuels.

edit: PJ beat me to it

Either you are unimformed or belive the current propoganda......even powering electric cars from coal fired power stations is in the order of 95% more enviromentaly freindly that a Gas/electric hybrid

The USA did have worlds largest and arguably best electric car program, it was called the GM-EV1, but a few years ago it was made to quietly diasapear.....even half the websites no longer exist

Fuel cells and hydrogen IMHO our just ways for oil companies to chainge their spots and maintain their evil grip over us!
