    1800' = grueling???

    really?

i wouldn't be too worried. not sure what kind of bike you're riding, but the climbs UP the pass are not that hard to do -- you can ride broken pavement. some of the "shuttles" start from <1/2-way up = maybe 30 minutes of climbing (on my heavy bike). you don't even need a shuttle to shuttle.

even to bike from the base of the pass past the parking lot to a higher peak is pretty straightforward (and fun).

I think you westerners forget that the eastern half of the country lives, shits, and rides at sea level. SEA LEVEL!!!!!! ie., 0 feet amsl. Or at least within a few hundred feet of it.

At 6,500', walking up the stairs to the Rancher would make me tired. (wait, no, nevermind, that would make me tired cuz Im outta shape)

UAN, you clearly have not ridden up Pole Canyon, followed by the 500' hike a bike after the climb. Tis' grueling.
Not to mention Grove Creek, South Fork Horseshoe, Mail Cabin, etc...the climbs in JH are middle ring compared to what we ride over here.

ahhh... you didn't say you were hiking. hike-a-bike is a different matter!!

haven't ridden pole canyon but perhaps i will - sounds like the downhill must be worth it. still haven't gotten in a MTB kick this season, but looking at the big holes the other day made me wonder. i mainly just ride loops from the house and don't really like to travel for MTB (as silly as that sounds, i just hate driving to go ride).

The Big Hole's kick major, major, major ass.
    Worth the drive.
Hit me up for a tour, followed by a burger at the Knotty.
    Totally worth it.

is snow king a middle ring climb for you? old pass road to elly/triple direct?

    damn! i am impressed (seriously)!

i only have two rings on my bike... but i'm not using the middle rings on those climbs. maybe i would if i shaved 9-10# off the bike.

I have ridden up old pass road on my full DH bike, with a 38 ring, cleaned the whole thing without pushing....and I have cleaned ferrin's on a singlespeed...(in sections, dabbing), as well as Snow King in the middle (32) ring....but I am sadly not in that kind of shape anymore.

    that is impressive!

there's a 50' vert section toward elly that i can never clean. i try to go from my house to elly non-stop....but i always push this one section. it's not in the 36T ring, though, but it's not in the easiest combo, either (close!).

and snow king in the 32T on a 38#-er is pretty damn good. wow.

    go, rideit!

    Motos make 'em better.

Rideit - Is Pole Cnyn to M. Harris better than Mail cabin to M. Harris? That's the way I have always ridden it but I'm always looking for a new option. Great downhill though. You're right about that. You'll have to show me around the Big Holes sometime.

Both are great...and both have a brutal hike a bike.
And both have sublime high altitude ridge singletrack, with no Moto action!
Mike Harris (actually Mike Sell) has a TON of deadfall right now, we might go up with chainsaws to clear it out.
I think that we were the first users on the trail this year yesterday...

plenty o' stuff with nice climbs (no hiking) + super-nice descents w/ no motos, albeit a little tougher to ride to from the ID side. i rarely see many/any people on the pass rides i do.

Some Lithium shuttle stokey pics. The bottom pic is of Nik Blaskovich. Still doesn't ring a bell, RideIt?

I found all these random videos online of Lithium and Big Sky. Nik is in all of them with Chad Ovens, Ryan Sears, and 'Jed'. Is that the same Jed that posts here?

Flowtron, I googled Nik on the google machine and it looked liked you guys raced together a lot. Did you ever know him?

I used to bike with him every day. Or maybe it was only 6 times a week, I can't remember. Haven't heard from him in years.
